We did through some onions and peppers in as well, just depended what was available at the time. Their market had limited (if any) refrigeration, so options were sometimes limited. Though the market was making great gains by the time my unit left, expanding and new shops were being built due to the security of having Marines next door!

My father doesn't cook but there is one dish he made that he said he learned while in the army and it was so delicious. It had ground beef, eggs and spinach and we ate it with rice. So good. He's now in the military cemetery in Florida. God bless to all the soldiers.

Yup, make due with what you have. During the earlier winter months of the deployment it was common to put a bottle of water in the exhaust of one of the armored vehicle's and wait for it to be heated, then use it to make hot coffee/chocolate or cup ramen (that was sent to us by kind people across the states! Thank you!).

Marines make do with so little and succeed and excel with whatever hand they are dealt. It's scary to imagine what they'd accomplish with state of the art equipment and logistics. Semper Fi my brothers. (Army veteran)

Technically they are pretty heavily funded since they fall under the branch of Navy. Look up the annual budget

Yes, everyone you saw in the video made it home safe, with the exception of the kittens, sadly. I was working to bring them to the states, and after the money was raised through charities online, they were sent with two other cats to a shelter to await transport, but died due to a disease. From what I was told it was sudden and the kittens didn't suffer. For more information do a google search for "kitten afghanistan marines shaw" and you'll get tons of links to the story.

That sounds good as well, and we did make several variation throughout our time there. Main variations generally were to include more veggies, such as onions and peppers. But sometimes different items weren't available due to our location and situation, and you just make due with what you can day to day.

I have an idea. I live in Kansas near the Missouri border. The 139th airlift wing is stationed in St. Jo, MO. The 190th air refueling wing in Topeka. Put in a request. Whatever you need we'll ship it directly to theater. Hogs, chickens, tomatoes, whatever you need. Load up on a C-130 with KC-135 to refuel.

I got a recruitment letter in august. My girlfriend doesn't want to be a part from me ( we are getting married) and we were wondering if we could get stationed together. We still haven't decided yet which branch we want to join but the top three are the marines, army, and air force. active duty or reserves. When reading the requirements on the reserves it mentioned time served in active drill. Is that being deployed? Also we wanted to join as cooks
