My mom makes a special appearance to show me her self-proclaimed "BEST" and "FAMOUS" Braised Pork Belly recipe aka Kong Bak Bao! BUT to make things interesting, we do this almost ENTIRELY in HOKKIEN Chinese.
Lots of people my age no longer speak Chinese dialects like Hokkien, and mine is pretty atrocious, but I thought I'd give it a go! I feel like we ended up doing more laughing than cooking, but I hope you enjoy it anyway.
This dish is perfect for Chinese New Year, family gatherings and for anyone you don't mind going through lots of steps for.
RECIPE BELOW!!!

Ingredients
1 kg of pork belly (approximately 1 feet long x 3 inches wide) - cut into 2 pieces for ease of blanching and frying
20 pieces of Chinese dried mushrooms (pre-soaked till soft, remove stalk)
Water for blanching
Oil for frying (semi-deep frying)
Marinade
5 tablespoons dark soya sauce
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
3 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
2 teaspoons white pepper powder
2 teaspoons five spice powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 tablespoons chinese cooking wine
3 to 5 cinnamon sticks
5 to 8 pieces of star anise
2 whole bulbs of garlic
Method
1. Bring water to boil in wok or pot and blanch the pork belly for approximately 30 seconds. You will notice that the meat is slightly cooked and the skin is slightly toughened.
2. Remove from water and drain. Prick the skin with the sharp end of a knife or sharp fork.
3. Next, heat up oil in wok and fry the pork belly 20 seconds on each side (skin side and meat side).
4. Remove and place on a rack for to cool and to let excess oil drip. You will notice that the meat and skin is now slightly browned and the whole piece of pork belly is slightly firm.
5. Cut the pork belly into 1.5cm-width slices.
6. Place the pork belly slices together with mushrooms in a suitable container and marinade them with the marinade above overnight.
7. After marinating, arrange the pork belly slices on a tray (suitable for steaming) and pour all the marinade over it.
8. Steam it for at least 1.5 hours.
9. To serve, steam to heat up the buns.

Sarah is amazing. You are good at expressing in Hokkien. I speak both Hokkien and Hakka, some mandarin and Cantonese too. All totally different dialects. Obviously I grew up Hokkien, speak Cantonese because I studied abroad and with Cantonese friends, speak Mandarin because of work life and speak Hakka because I’m married.

This is absolutely a joy to watch on so many levels: (1) Speaking Hokkien, on a (2) CNY dish, with (3) some D D B B cool beats! Despite the struggle with the Hokkien, I could feel the effort and the fun in watching you and your mum host the show! Thank you, I enjoyed myself and learnt a “CHUT MIA” recipe!

Love the hokkien versions !! Hahahahahha reminds me of when the grandkids try to speak Hokkien with the grandparents and getting told off the grammar and vocab is all wrong so stick to Mandarin or English. 🤣 so funny it’s good learning process though.

This was such fun to watch. I hope to see more. My family is from Taiwan originally and Hokkien dialect was my first language, now mostly forgotten, but when I hear this it comes back. My daughter is learning mandarin but wants to learn hokkien too. More vids with Ma like this please!

@@Tekhelet75 what's the surprise.. More than 75% of Taiwanese are of Hokkien origin.. Even Hokkien has been unofficially dubbed the term "Taiwanese dialect" (台語) in Taiwan. Most of our Hokkien language media and songs originate from Taiwan too. Not more than a few % of Taiwanese are of Taiwanese aboriginal descent.

I was so happy to find out about your youtube so that I can learn more about my mother's heritage. When I was a kid my mom was the only Cantonese dish. The only time I got to eat Hokkien food was during the new year and my aunt make Hokkien dishes. I want to learn more. Can your mom do Hokkien zongzi, please?

Nice and thank you for sharing, I am now studying more about HOKKIEN history and so on.. My grand mother´s mother emigrated to Thailand for more than 150 years ago. I only known from my mother. But my grand mother married to Navy soldier and she had adapted herselt a lot to be Thai lady regarding Thai tradition who married with high rank soldier. Therefore I have not know more about HOKKIEN Ancestor any more. Now I want to know more :-) Best wishes from Stockholm - Sweden

Hey Sarah, saw your video on FB first, and it had me and hubby in stitches 🤣🤣🤣 so I found you again on KZbin and rewatched this. 😍 You are such a great inspiration to all the “bananas” and “potatoes” 🤪😂👏👏👍 out there who are Chinese and can’t speak a word of their dialect/mother tongue which I think is so important in learning their own tradition and culture. The essence of learning is really not being afraid to speak and practise often (with your mum in this case!😁) even at the expense of being laughed at and you did that. Thanks for the great recipe and Hokkien lesson! Your hokkien is actually not bad! Buay pai buay pai!!👍😁😂😂
