Both of you are so funny. Sometimes when Sarah/ the younger lady is "impatient" or fussy, the older one is ever chill and zai. Each time, Sarah couldn't find the right hokkien words, she would switch to a mix of (macam) Malay or Mandarin. Aiyoh, so hilarious, both can be comedians. It's wonderful that both mother and daughter have such a good relationship, which doesn't happen to everyone. So that's a blessing really and hopefully, Sarah spends more time w mommy bcoz parents get older by the year and often times, it's common for children to take them (and their company) for granted. God bless and here's wishing both of you a happy new year 新年快乐,岁岁平安健康 (esp for Sarah's mom).

Im from the Philippines and my grandparents + grand uncle and aunt spoke Hokkien. Growing up, I also studied Mandarin but I didn't retain much after I transferred schools because I didn't appreciate it much back then. Now, my grands have all passed so I have no one to speak Hokkien or Mandarin with. My dad's level of Hokkien is about same as yours but he mostly speaks Filipino. I just bought some dictionaries and textbooks and since I just graduated college, I have some extra time to learn how to speak fluent Hokkien, hopefully within a short period of time since I do have some basic background on it. Anyway, I'm gonna try to cook this dish for the upcoming CNY. Thanks for sharing great content!

This is a very good try with 福建話。I came back to Singapore every few yeas, but have only met your mom and grandma a few times. There was once I came back during Chinese New Year and saw you in our family reunion but we were both occupied with others and I did not get to speak with you, my niece Sarah. You are having fun with cooking 福建麵 and 福建話。Next time you can mix it with 普通話,you may be more comfortable with it. - From Canada

True Singaporeans speak this way, the rojak (mixed cut fruits/bean sprouts/cucumber/dough stick tossed in prawn paste/syrup and toped with grated peanuts) way. You'll hear English, Mandarin, Malay, Hokkein, Teochew, Cantonese spoken in one sentence, Singlish if you like.

Woah.. didn’t realise Wee is also Hokkien just like Ng for 黄.. Last time I heard, some Southern Chinese folks when they sailed to SG/MY and settled down (entails liaising with local British authorities for residency/legal/business/family etc matters), they had to provide a romanised version of their full Chinese names in their respective dialects, regardless of whether they had Western or Christian names. Some Hokkien (and maybe Teochew too) people felt Ng sounded too awful and perhaps confusing (Cantonese/Hakka Ng is totally different - 吴/伍,跟黄很不一样), hence the nearest sounding alternative would be Wee. Till date, some Hainanese and Hakkas (from non Canto regions) have adopted Wee for 黄 too arising from earlier Hokkien influences, e.g namewee
