Jason, fields are flooded, the turnips are gone.... and he could very easily catch pneumonia being THAT wet. And cold. Nothing simple about that- at all. Early death was a fact of life back then. Hopefully they have plenty of dry wood.

Dear Youngsters, hello. Where I grew up in Northern upstate near the boarder of Canada leeks grew wild and each spring Mum and Pop took us up to the higher hills in the forest and we would pick them. My whole family had to help. Mum would store them in a old wicker basket in the basement and they would last a good long while. Mum put them in everything instead of onions and they were free. It was the Great Depression so any food found it was very helpful. We had barley. It makes such a filling soup barley does. I was going to ask you no jelly or abit of butter or honey on your toasty bread. My grandmum had a bread toaster similar to yours, it was her Great Grandmums. God Bless you youngsters 👵🙏👍 PS I have seen that foot warmer before, you do not find many of them anymore. You are lucky to have one. 👍

Hope you can salvage some turnips. Many years ago I was actually living in a half built cabin. We had all the walls in the cabin framed but only 3 were closed in. We had half an acre planted a little late in potatoes and got an early early snowfall before we had harvested the taters. My husband was gone so I went out with the neighbor woman while it was raining sleet the next morning and she and I harvested those potatoes before they froze. We were SO cold and wet when it was done. We didn't have a hearth but did have a wood burning stove set up. I'd built up a fire in it before we went out to the field and when we got back we took off our boots, set two stumps in front of that stove, opened the oven door, and just stuck our feet right in there! I know just how Ron felt as he sat in front of that fire and thawed out! Soup looked real good.

Dear Mrs Burke, so much hard work and so cold, but when your done and you get back to your cottage, it's the little things that bring us joy. As you got those very wet cloths off and snuggled up you to your fireplace you realize how fortunate you are to have the warmth of the fire and the person you love most in the world beside you! Lovely memory! 👵👍

Another great video! I worked outdoors quite a bit when younger and it was great to come in, strip off my wet clothes, and stand next to our wood heater in my undies to warm up! Ha ha. When a child, my home was heated with gas floor furnaces, and I often remember my mother coming in during the winter and standing over the floor furnace grate, so her skirt would billow out with warm air! We boys would lay on the floor as close to the grate as possible and listen to our family radio!

Not that we minded them being bare, but since he now had a dry shirt, would the blanket had not served him better on his legs? The soup looked wonderful with the toasted bread! Seeing him come home cold and being warmed and taken care of by your precious Love, does my heart good! Maybe you could sell some cookies at the Tavern where you work? Even though Christmastime has passed, maybe making some stars to sell on the side! I don't want to see you have go back to domestic service, if you can help it. Do you sew?

@Early American I just made this today and it turned out great! I used some tomatoes that I ripened on my window sill and the potatoes, celery and onions were harvested from my garden. I’m saving this receipt for posterity and calling it Early American Harvest Barley Soup. Too bad I didn’t have a warm fire to cook it near on a cold day like today. The stove wasn’t nearly as warming as your hearth looked. I didn’t have any meat on hand just a strip of leftover bacon, but chopped that up and added it to the pot. I love being able to make a meal using a handful of this or that, a sprig of this a pinch of that. That’s how my mom said my grandmother cooked. I never knew my grandmother she died in childbirth during the depression. Love seeing you and Ron interpreting early American life on the frontier.

That is a beautiful pot you cooked the soup in. Is it from Townsend's? I covet your cookware!!! Great video! Ron is lucky to have you taking care of him! Venison sausage looks good too. Did you make it? Ron showing off his legs!!! LOL Thanks for all you do!
