It’s so beautiful to see you having such close relationship with your mother in law, it’s very rare indeed. And watching your clips the past few months, your son has grown so big and adorable looking. He has more of your genes, he looks almost like a western kid, cute and lovable! Beautiful family, I envy and happy for you! Cheers!

In the city I lived close by when I was a child there was a sugar beet processing factory, I can still remember the distinct smell of the factory! We used the roots to make lanterns for November 11 (Dutch Halloween without the dressing up, but with the candy and singing song) as they were cheap and plentiful. Lots of farmers in my village grew them!
@MiriamFollin5 жыл бұрын
oh, wow, that is so cool! I had never heard about that before! I had to google it - they look much scarier than pumpkin lanterns haha! But was it not hard to get them hollow? They are so had, inside and out! Not like pumpkin with a lot of seeds and softness in the middle! When I went to Uni in Sweden, I lived next to a factory as well! During wintertime it smelled terribly haha. Every time you were close with the train, you knew were home, because of the smell haha.

Miriam...Those are turnips! Beets are red and I grow them, too! I love turnips drenched in flour, salt and pepper and wrapped in bacon...baked...So yummy! Your recipe looks really very good too! I just love you and your family!
@MiriamFollin4 жыл бұрын
Hi, if I see the translation correctly between English and Swedish that's not right! A turnip, at least what we call turnip in Sweden, is not so sweet. This is called sweet beet or sugar beet and we grow it in Sweden too, but only to make white sugar from it. So its not the normal red beet root. I haven't seen turnip in this part of China!

I also tried these sugar beets for the first time last month (in Ningxia Province). I walked past them and was curious and my friend translated it as sugar beet and I assumed it to be Chinese beetroot. I got excited as I love beetroot. The ones I got looked the similar to yours from the outside but were red inside. I steamed mine and once done they were a very light pink. I didn't think they were very sweet though as the ones I have had in South Africa / England were sweeter and we ate them as a salad. I ate some at work and my colleagues were surprised that I was eating it as is. They said that it is used to make sugar just like you mentioned. I didn't realize that they were referring to actual white sugar which now explains their shocked faces ;) I like the way your family prepares it and now I want to try the leaves as well.

Love your show Miriam, and your family. Yes, your baby is especially adorable. The root vegetable here, shape and color looks like parsnip to me. Parsnips are sweet. The ones we have in the US are not that large. I usually slice them and sauté them in butter with some salt and that’s all-Good to eat. Would love to try your parsnips wraps for sure!
@MiriamFollin5 жыл бұрын
Not parsnip! That was my first thought when she pulled them up haha. We have a lot of parsnip in Sweden too. This is sugar beet (the beet to produce white sugar). I have never tried anything so sweet before!

Hi Miriam! Great video as always. I was just wondering, if it's not too personal for me to ask, what your husband's ethnicity is?
