I followed your recipe for erbswurst , it turned out excellent, cooked it up later with diced salami and a hand full of dehydrated vegetables .

My friend Mark … Another excellent video and recipe of sorts. This combination with a few squirts of Trappey’s Hot Sauce and you have the makings of one whale of a trail meal. Some instant rice might be nice to pour this over. Wonderful video!!! God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita (Houston), Texas, USA. ✝️🎣👨🌾🦌🙏

Wow what a great idea - mixing both worlds together is super convenient. I was thinking up and down how to name that new food and came to many names and ideas. Instead of finding a completely new term for that creation I thought about how to connect both the names in a way that the basic thing is still anyhow visible. And even though I'm a total Erbswurst lover, I think the honour for being one of the eldest and maybe best working and longest standing emergency foods belongs definitely to Pemmikan, so for me that hybrid is more to see as a variation/extension of Pemmikan than a variation/extension of the Erbswurst. So finally I thought what would honour the peas in the Erbswurst as well as the Pemmikan as the other ingredient is maybe something like term "Peammican". 😁
@MarkYoungBushcraftАй бұрын
I like "pemmikan". I agree about this being mostly a variation of one or the other. I am working on other variations for future videos. Thanks for commenting

This is a great series. I will definitely try making some erbswurst when I next have some leftover pork fat, and I think your idea of using a soup mix rather than just peas is very ingenious. I am very much looking forward to seeing your review of that mess kit - I have one very similar which hasn't been used yet. Thank you again for these interesting videos.

I have been following this series with interest. One correction: Erbswurst dates from 1867, not 1900, and may have been carried by old soldiers in WWI (I have been read that some old soldiers thought highly of it so got it on their own), but by 1914 it was no longer being issued. It was not issued in WWII, either; they had a very different iron ration for that.

If you’re making something like this for an emergency food, in my opinion, it shouldn’t be too seasoned and tasty, because pemmican is so calorie dense, and also not meant to be eaten all up in one day. I have a similar cook kit. It’s great and with the locking bail, pretty convenient. I also got a cook kit that is the same shape, slips over the bottom for storage, and has flaps that fold down to keep it at the right height when using the big military trangia, which came with it. Takes up no space, and is aluminum so it doesn’t weigh much at all. Works amazingly well.

Hi Jim. I am finding that some of the variations I am trying out can be a trail bar. The trick is not make them too big. These larger blocks I leave plain like you say and reserve them for meals. Thanks for commenting

Looks pretty good to me. As a long term storage food, that would be ideal. It's amazing how people found pemmican in parts of Canada that was really old, and it was still edible. Erbican? Cheers, Mark! ✌️🇨🇦

Thanks for anticipating my question in your video. I was wondering if you were in a pinch if you could nibble on it as is. Any idea the nutrition values? I was wondering how it could compare to something you could buy that is commercially made (I expect yours would be better).
@MarkYoungBushcraftАй бұрын
I worked out the nutritional macros for the pemmican (see video) but not the erbswurst, yet. I know pemmican is sold commercially but not erbswurst or anything similar. I will work out the macros for erbswurst and put them in that video. Thanks for commenting

Just how long does the erbswurst keep? Thinking about making a batch to keep in long term storage. An old timer once told me to cook applesauce in an alluminum pot/pan if it turns pink get rid of it.
@MarkYoungBushcraftАй бұрын
You may be surprized how long ebrswurst will last. I talk about it in original video. Not sure about the applause and aluminum but it may have to do with acids in the applesauce reacting with the aluminum. Thanks for commenting
