Well.....you managed to prove how effective at insulating a double wall mug is. It should be obvious that something intended for the opposite of cooking would not work out so well. Thankfully it was well made and did not explode.

shootermcmillan yeah I feel like the results aren't mind blowing by any means, but having never really seen real evidence of what happens, it was worth the time to see. Thanks for watching!

If there's a vacuum between the walls, then there's nothing to explode. If the metal was heated enough to lose it's strength, then it would collapse inwards like you see in the experiments of heating a metal jug or barrel and then rapidly cooling it. If there's air in the gap, then the air will heat and expand but the air pressure is probably small compared to the strength of the cup. It's possible that the bottom curved down because the air expanded and pushed out the weak bottom but I suspect that it's simply the metal expanding as it get very hot, so it has to bow up or down and gravity dictates down, plus already curved downwards at the edges.

It heated enough to bulge so something could happen. If there was a small amount of moisture inside the double wall it could actually explode.

Thanks for the visual demo! Most heat transfer occurs through the neck and opening of the flask, where there is no vacuum, so a different shape such as a bottle would react differently. Not surprised it took long for the water to boil as by definition: A vacuum flask (also known as a Dewar flask, Dewar bottle or thermos) is an insulating storage vessel that greatly lengthens the time over which its contents remain hotter or cooler than the flask's surroundings.
@brianwest27752 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Heat transfers by three possible modes: Conduction, Convection and Radiation. Double-wall cuts out the direct conduction. If there's a vacuum, it cuts out convection but it doesn't block radiation. I bet that the heat transfer from radiation far outweighs the heat transfer via conduction at the lip because heat transfer is directly proportional to the area. The lip has a very small cross-section whereas the rest of the cup has a much much larger area and the bottom of the cup is essentially at the temperature of the flame, so it's radiating a significant amount of heat. I don't think that you could maintain boiling with the heat transfer through the lip.

It have no gas in it to transfering heat. That is its big idea. If you go to Siperia and in -55 Cold and stand perfectly still, you not feel that cold because you have warm air next to skin but if you move yourself it gone.

I have that mug and love it. Keeps my coffee hot for a long time. I thought it was a vacuum inside but apparently not since obviously there was enough gas/air inside to expand and push the bottom out.

I think the pressure pushed the bottom out. I would assume the rounded parts of the mug add strength and the flat spot is the weak point, but who knows lol. Im impressed by that stove. Thats definitely faster than the pocket rocket. Pretty cool👍

Performance--failure--depends on the quality of construction, I suppose. And I would guess the distortion of the bottom had something to do with the expansion of the air between the walls. I wonder what the manufacturer says about the effects of cooking with their product.

Friends have had a Stanley stainless double wall mug on the fire one trip and it exploded but I think the titanium is such a strong metal that it could still hold the expanding pressure in the vacuum layer between walls (and a campfire is much hotter than a small stove and focused the heat underneath the mug not all around it). Your a brave man sir, lucky to not have been scalded by boiling water but I like the experiment, I would suggest some safety precautions for dangerous tests like these tho, but it is cool to see what happened to the titanium.

lucas sutton don't worry I wasn't a total idiot. I had glasses on and kept my distance.
@jasonpetty37867 жыл бұрын
The inherent design of an insulated mug (insulated being the key word) makes it a poor choice to cook with. With that said you are lucky. Some of these insulated type stainless and titanium mugs are filled with a gas to reduce thermal exchange. And they can easily explode and cause injury. If you do something like this again I would recommend some safety precautions. Distance being the first and keeping a potential explosion away from your house. Just my 2 cents. Keep the videos coming.
@jasonpetty37867 жыл бұрын
steppenwolf you had that mug sitting on top of a pressurized can of gas (Canister stove). Not really knowing what to expect as far as possible failure of the mug at a a minimum it could have knocked you stove over while still on. FYI the swelling of the bottom of the mug was due to pressure increase inside the insulated mug. I believe the only thing that kept it from failing was the water inside the mug. If you really want to see the mug fail heat it up without weather in it.
