You’re missing point. When you pour boiling water into a single wall metal cup, the cup quickly obtains the same temperature and becomes uncomfortable to touch with hands or lips. Thus the handles. A double walled cup doesn’t conduct heat (as easily) and thus is pleasant to hold and drink from. Handles are not necessary on a double walled cup, so loose those for weight savings.

I have the 600 double wall cup, originally chose it over the single to keep from burning my lips. It also works good for warming cold hands. After using it several times I started setting my pot of food over it, that eliminates the need for a pot koozie. By the time I break or setup camp my food is completly done, and both the meal and beverage are still nice and hot.

I settled into my Toaks 750/450 nesting kit about 18 months ago and love it. I gave serious consideration to the double-walled 450 cup, but figured at the extra weight and doubled price, it wasn't worth it. The way I saw it, the beverage is still losing heat from the open top, so unless the double-walled mug had a sealed lid, it wouldn't make that big of a difference. Instead, I made a reflectix cozy for my 450 cup, and it stays in that cozy until I get home and take it out to wash it. The 450 in its cozy nests perfectly in the 750. It's a great setup.

I did go with the double wall mug the two ounces wasn't a huge deal to me, that price though....ouch! Here was my reasoning... though the extra heat retention wasn't a huge deal... the fact that I wouldn't scald my lips on a hot mug was. Not sure it was worth the extra cost and size, but there is a significant difference in the outside temp of the mug oh and also the double wall seems a good bit sturdier.
@robpelton5 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of people having that issue. Perhaps I just don’t take my beverages piping hot. I do have a “hotlips” if it ever becomes a problem. Either way, great cups! Thanks for watching!

@@robpelton Hotlips are good, but for me and how scattered I can be they're just one more thing for me to forget and lose. Speaking of accessories. I understand getting the lid that goes with those cups ( more money flying out the window + the extra weight) makes a huge difference in how long they'll keep something warm. Not a big deal when doing a through hike or other long backpacking trip, because you won't be in camp too long in the morning. But when camping or at the end of a day during a long backpacking trip, it might be nice to nurse a hot beverage for a few extra minutes... I guess it depends if you want to make the weight and cash sacrifice - definitely pushes the double cups into "luxury item" territory seeing as the single wall mugs are so darned good.

Ability to hold the mug with my bare hands is what it’s for. Try it the other way around and put a nice scoop of frosty ice cream in each mug. As long as you’re not needing to reheat liquids in the mug, the weight (and price?) penalty might be worth it. If you’ve ever scalded your hand on a bare titanium cup, you know what I’m taking about.

Good review Rob. For me the reason to carry a metal cup is in the event I have to cook directly in it. It's sort of a back-up as I use an integrated pot/stove system and if somehow the pot got destroyed I have the secondary metal cup.. I don't like drinking from the pot, so I pour it into a smaller cup that is easier to handle and more enjoyable to drink out of. I might give the single wall a try, will probably opt for the 375ml with the lid.

On it's face this was a fair test, but it's actually not. A lid is the difference, and by that, I mean that with no lid the double wall is barely in use and it's basically a standard cup with that giant heat escaping hole. If you were to redo this with a lid on BOTH cups, the difference would be night and day. Imagine taking a double wall 24 cold tumbler and putting ice water in it without a lid...10 hours or less it's all water...but add the lid and you get a full day. I'll bet with a lid on them you would get a 40 degree difference or better after say an hour in that cold.

@fernandesbjp4 жыл бұрын
Hello. I watched this test to decide to buy or not a double walled titanium mug or not. And I have a question/test for you to do. I have older aluminium single walled mugs, from the time I was a boy scout, and have now a more modern sea to summit plastic mug, and also a double walled stainless steel mug. I stopped using my older aluminium mug, because its that really cheap aluminium that preserves every odor that you put in, and by the time you don't burn your lips in the lid, my tea isn't warm anymore. The Plastic mug is much more pleasant to use, but I do a lot of cooking by the fire, (fire and plastic are not good friends) Now the double walled stainless is the best, the negative side is the weight. Now the test for you is to try and drink hot/warm coffee or tea out of both, single/double walled and confirm the safety of your lips. The thing is that in the single wall that wall is going to be at the same or so temperature of the liquid, whereas the double walled no, it mimics a porcelain mug. Thanks. Bruno Fernandes , Portugal.

A friend of mine says single-walled titanium cups will not burn your lips if the hot liquid is below the rim. I have not tested this claim. I would like to use a single wall cup for weight, but I'm concerned that I won't be able to hold it in my hands comfortably without insulation.
@NGMonocrom4 жыл бұрын
This was eye-opening. I thought there would be a _much_ bigger difference. I mean, you pay about double the price for a Double Wall vs. Single Wall mug. You can't use a DW mug for cooking; only drinking out of. And all you get is 7 degrees difference after 20 minutes? And realistically speaking, if you're out in the cold with a hot beverage, you'll be done with it in 10 minutes. Which in this case was only a 4 degree difference. Why buy something that you can't use directly on a fire or stove, that costs twice as much, and barely does a better job of keeping your hot beverage hot in comparison to something less expensive and more versatile? I have one DW mug. A cheap stainless steel one I bought from Wal-Mart under their in-store Ozark Trail brand. It even came with a sip-lid. No folding handles. But to be honest, glad I didn't spend the money on a titanium DW mug.
