For the real deal, check out "Cool" performed on the Ed Sullivan Show when it was new on Broadway. (KZbin)

Agreed! Raw passionate and the dancers attack the movement. There's an element of swing to their approach. I tell my dance students that certain styles need more emphasis more. staccato, more accent. There's also this energy and angularity to 1950s jazz that is hard to teach. It's a lil' bit like me imitating someone else's regional dialogue accent, it might work, but it takes effort. As you mentioned the template for this dance is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZCsp56kequNfdU

I loved the choreography! Clearly not all of them were dance majors but I thought they did a very nice job..

Never heard a gang member sing with operatic vibrato.

I was just thinking that. He could try out for Hagen from Das Rheingold.

Why is his voice vibrating so much? Doesn’t sound right at all

Not a fan of his vibrato. Bernstein's head would have exploded.

He has a Tony voice, I was ready for him to start singing Maria! Lol

Actually, it was originally written as an "jazz opera" the Broadway cast stopped that vibrato crap before too long. This is too slow too, but maybe it's a high school show.(?)

Oh my . What's up with all the extra VIBRATO? Is he trying to show off his singing ability? It throws the song off. It ruins an absolutely great song.

I didn't really notice the vibrato until I read your comment. Now it is the only thing I hear. Agreed.

in total agreement with you...ruined the song...

the vibr stands out even more here b/c the lead singer is frequently out of tune with the orchestra

I'm very picky...didn't like the voice too much vibrato...the choreography i like it...even if not all where dancers they could have made the movements pop more...anyone who loves West Side Story always look for this dance piece...so for me when it comes to "COOL"...it really needs to grab you out of your seat

Nice, smooth dance moves . . . but is that what one would expect of an urban street gang?
@MeAffordable6 жыл бұрын
Listen to Micky Calin from the original Broadway production singing this number. He sounds like a guy from the street, not this classically trained opera singer. Not believable. As a director I would have "Jerome Robbins him to death" until he sang this song with the kind of honesty that this number needs.....how could he have missed that? Oh well...next please.....
