That's a dope trick! It also works for mashups and remixes - some of my favourites that I've made switch back and forth between tracks in a rhythmical way, rather than layering the different songs together.

They call it "hoquet" and this trick was first used by Medieval DJs and MCs, who also experimented with different tracks playing the same melody. Their mixtapes and songs haven't survived by nowadays, but we've got some of their ableton projects that indicate the fact and show how it was made. And it's very cool and nice thing you've also discovered this fun thing by yourself and decided to share it with your viewers. You're not just a great musician and composer, but also a very generous one. The world needs more people like you.

This reminds me of another musical concept called 'hocket'. It's basically piecing together a complete continuous melody but it's distributed through different instruments, Adam Neely has a really cool video on the subject. Nice vid, Andrew!

Thanks for the confidence! I've got a guitar handy, as well as a bass, I just don't have a decent way of recording it (and am absolutely unwilling to subject the internet to seeing me on camera, but that's a different issue entirely.) I actually do quite a bit of my own music already: soundcloud.com/nolan-ezell/tracks Eventually I will start putting more of it here on KZbin as well, some of the more recent, better stuff. It's a learning journey, though, and something that would benefit a lot more from a decent 80's cheese machine than a 1k unit like the OP-1 :)

discovered this by accident and not it's my favorite way to use play around in the tape mode. Your example was super sick. This is also incredibly useful for buildups and beat drops. Solo just one track for a bar, and when you bring back in the other three it can make a cool beat drop effect.

I've never really created any music beyond a few notes on a cheap keyboard, but I actually used to do this all the time with music editing software. I would take whatever sample song(s) that came with the software and turn the tracks on and off rapidly to create different music. Of course, being completely derivative of someone else's music, I didn't do anything with those tweaked songs. Good to know Andrew thinks it's a musical trick!

Andrew plays everything. Watch him and Rob Scallon write and perform a whole album in 10 hours. One of my favorite videos on youtube. Andrew has a really solid foundation on the drums, absolutely fantastic rhythm. He's also an amazing bassist, and a very decent guitarist. And his vocals... omg... Basically, Andrew Huang is not fair. He seems to be able to do pretty much whatever he wants with music. If I had half of his talent in just my pinky, I would be satisfied with my life. lmao

I use the mutes in a similar way, during an album take, for scratching effects. I don't have a turntable setup suitable for real scratch fading etc. so I use an iPad app called "eDJing". Then, I'll just baby scratch to the rhythm over the entire length of the loop (4-8 bars), and when mixing to album, I'll solo the other tracks, and "tap out" on the scratch, which helps to add a fading effect to the mix, and adds a ton of variety. This way, the same 4 bar scratch can sound totally varied across a 16 bar passage in the album mix.

Hey Andrew I've been making music for a while and I really want a synthesizer to make my music different but I noticed this one that you use is really expensive It would be awesome if In a video you could go over different synthesizers at different price points
@ferdi9688
@ferdi9688 7 жыл бұрын
Don't know if you care for my opinion but I also recently started using synthesizers: I got an Arturia MiniBrute, which is at 400$, it's an analogue synth, quite compact and has a simple design while having a ton of features to use. There's also a smaller version, the Arturia MicroBrute, which is at 300$, that one is significantly smaller and maybe more what you're looking for if you like the OP-1. I myself as a synth beginner found these really good for understanding the way synths work and how you can modify the sound to achieve certain effects.

+1 ... A microbrute is next on my list because I want better sound-sculpting capabilities (and an educational tool) in a small and cheap unit. It's completely manual though, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. No ability to load/save patches.

Andrew, have you ever tried any DJing or turntablism? I know it's not exactly the same as the tip that you described in this video, but using the crossfader and volume faders to cut different tracks in and out live is a common DJing trick. Maybe something you'd be interested in?

Almost sounds like switching between tracks on a turntable. Except you can have the drums going the whole time for continuity which is nice.
@bronsoncarder2491
@bronsoncarder2491 4 жыл бұрын
I love it. Seems like it would work best if you held 2 and 3 for the first beat of every measure, and then alternated in between. Would give it a bit more continuity, and you'd make better use of the full spectrum at any one time. But, even crazier, is you could theoretically have one harmonized bass and synth line on one track, and a different reharmonization of the same line on the other, and by switching back and forth between these, create melodies and movement that you wouldn't have otherwise.

As if anyone really cares if you were first or you get notifications.
