Introducing Phoenix Torch Fireable Clay! In this video, Karen walks through the working qualities of our newest fine silver clay. Phoenix Torch Fireable Clay is a great, all purpose metal clay with excellent working properties and can be fired with a kiln or torch. Because it can fire at low temperatures, it is the perfect clay for co-firing with glass. Great video as usual, Karen! Very interesting new formula!! I don't usually torch fire, but this clay *does* open up possibilities for kiln-firing with embedded natural gemstones because of the low firing temps. Hmm... 🤔😲😃

I have a rhodolite garnet that is torchable according to the cooltools fireable gems chart, but is also low fire. Does that affect how I torch it, or do I torch all gems the same way?

Hello, you would torch fire the piece the same way as any other piece if your stone can be torch fired. Hope this helps!

This is a lot cheaper than a casting house I ordered a prototype piece from. The high shrinkage will need some testing to compensate for, though; too bad there are no non-precious versions for that testing. I look forward to picking up some soon!!! Now, if only it came in gold!

@@cooltoolsvideos The bronze alloys do not shrink nearly as much, and this silver clay is the only one that can be fired with a torch. That is what I meant. They are all really cool alternatives to casting for people with a kiln. Very cool products.

Could you comment on what the shrinkage like, compared to other fine silver clays?

Hello, Phoenix shrinks 15-20%. FS999 shrinks 13% and Art Clay Silver shrinks 8-9%. Hope this helps!

I would like to fire my Phoenix clay pieces with a trinket kiln. Would the time be different from kiln fired suggestions on the card - I'm assuming the card refers to a larger kiln and not a trinket kiln?

Hi Jennifer, that is correct. The firing temperature and times on the card are for a standard table top kiln. If you can tell us what trinket kiln you are using we can help you in how to best fire your pieces.

Hi Karen, Would this clay be good to make rings and bracelets using the torch to fire? Or is better for just pendants? Also , would you still pickle this when finished before polishing? Also, if I were making a bracelet, would and should I bend it before firing it with the torch? Would I be able to and is it possible to make a bracelet with it, being as it would be long when flat? Can you fire a whole bracelet with a torch?

Hey! So this is something I'm currently testing out. Fine silver typically isn't recommended for rings, but I've found that Phoenix sinters to be really strong, even with just a torch. I've made several rings that I've torch fired with Phoenix and have been wearing them and putting them to the test of being worn to see how they hold up to daily wear and tear. So far the ring I've been wearing for 5 months is holding up well, so I feel like Phoenix can be used for torch fired rings. Hope that helps! -Karen

It depends on what I’m working on! Both have very different working qualities and I’d choose different clays for different jobs. I really like working with Phoenix, I’d say I prefer it for wet construction and most things, but would choose EZ960 for a piece that’s going to be heavy in dry construction or would require a lot of flexibility when in the greenware stage. Is that what you meant as watered down paste? Also, can I use a bezel made with bezel wire set into the clay then torch fire it? Or would I torch it then add flux and solder the bezel on top? 🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@jeanene888 We do not have a paste or syringe yet, but do plan on this in the future. You can definitely use the clay itself as paste. Add a little water to a small piece of clay and use a clay shaper to rub the water in and create a thicker paste. Yes, you can use a bezel made with bezel wire and set into the clay to torch fire. Use paste to attach the bezel wire instead of soldering!

Yes, you can do that, but it would be much easier to make a greenware embellishment and attach it to the ring shank with clay and then fire! Hope this helps!

Yes, normally we do not recommend torch firing pieces that take abuse like rings, but due to the density of Phoenix, rings that have been torch fired hold up perfectly well! We've been testing a few torch fired rings, wearing them daily for close to a year now without issue.
