For "formed pieces" can you fire the sunshine enamel without a flux then do a second firing with the flux so you don' need to worry about a wet spray affecting the unfired sunshine enamel?

I love your tutorials! I am teaching myself enameling now and I have learned so much from your videos. I am trying to make post/stud enameled earrings and keep melting the solder! I purchased special solder for this purpose from Thompson’s and using their enamels for torch firing (1000-2000 series). I would absolutely love a video from cool tools on this process. My artist vision keeps melting away!! Thanks and keep it up!

what oil to use for potrait painting? and does it give different results than distilled water ?

What temperature do you fire them at?

Sunshine Enamels fire approximately 1 - 1.5 minutes at 1380°F - 1400°F. / 749°C - 760°C. Hope this helps!

Hi Nan, we asked Jan your question and she replied: The sunshine colors can be watered down quite a lot if a more watercolor look is wanted. If they need to be opaque-less water but the best method is to put two light coats on with a firing in between painting applications and most can be mixed except for the reds and red purples(I think). Hope this helps!

Can this be fired in a microwave kiln?

Hi Bobbi, Sunshine Enamels need to be fired between 1300°F - 1350°F. As long as the microwave kiln can reach this temperature and has a window, this should not be a problem. Thanks for the question!

It has been my understanding that sugar coating is just an underfired enamel piece, and not the grains of glass used.

Are the Sunshine colors mixable?

Hello, all colors, with very few exceptions, are intermixable. In any case, we recommend to test mixtures under the specific processing conditions prior to use. The exceptions are the cadmium containing colors 13 1230 Mandarin, 17 1250 Orange,17 1251 Poppy and 17 1252 Cardinal. These can only be mixed with one another, but mixtures with up to 5 % Green, Blue, Black, or the flux 10 117 are according to our experiences possible without problems. However, extreme firing conditions or too thin color deposits might negatively influence the firing stability of the mixed color. The iron oxide containing color 17 578 is compatible with all other completely intermixable colors. The content of 17 578 Iron Red in the mixture should be higher than 50 %. Creating pastel shades should be done with Mixing White 19 1231. This is suitable as well for overprinting the cadmium colours 13 1230, 17 1250, 17 1251, and 17 1252 to produce pastel shades like they are desired for “skin” colors. To lighten and to overprint colors, mixing flux 10 117 is recommended. This flux can also be used as coating flux, but not for the color 17 578 Iron Red. The coating flux 10 169 improves resistance and gloss of all Sunshine colors.

What lovely pieces, great video, thank you! fyi - please hold the pieces in front of camera close up, without handling them or shaking them. I was struggling to see the final finish but they were being jiggled around and covered by your hands too much to see the difference between the clear finish and sugar finish, for one. Too few closeups and too much wide angle. It should be mostly closeups all the way.
