Today's Cool Tool is a Money Saving Cool Tool!!! I use my rotary cutter for almost everything... and I kill them on a regular basis... Sometimes, I change my blade because it's not cutting through fabric & I run over a pin 5 minutes later. Sometimes I'll limp along with a bag blade because they are so Expensive!! I found Titanium Japanese Steel Rotary Cutter Replacement Blades at an amazing price... After reading the reviews, I decided to give them a try. ...So Happy I Did, they are super sharp, Join me to check them out! Bonus, I'll show you how to change the blade and put the rotary cutter back together properly. PS... I shared how to adjust the tightness on the blade when you are replacing it so it works perfectly on my Favorite Cutting Mat!! The Big Mat from @bigmatrotarycuttingsurface Company! (so much better than those self-healing mats!)

I have 2 rotary cutters. I have one that I use the old blade in for cutting paper and save the other one for fabrics. They are clearly marked so I don’t get them confused. I make a lot of bags and some of those materials are rough on blades.

Thanks for the heads-up on the blades! I have an empty loose leaf tea tin that I use to store old blades, sewing needles and bent pins and will get recycled when it is full.

Thanks for the blade tips. SInce you already have a container to dispose your old blades in, you must have been using these for a month or so? You do a LOT of cutting w/rotary blades so I know you'd be the one to ask about which ones work the best. I put some 45mm blades in my basket. What a great find!

My pleasure! Actually my "old blade container" is from a 5 pack of Ofla blades... I compared the depth of this container with the new one I'm share here... Fun fact, the Ofla container is deeper... So I can put a lot of old blades in it before recycling!! Thanks for watching

Two of the best things I bought for my sewing room: Big Mat and rotary cutter blades. Thanks for the tip! I’ll buy them. I had been sending them to LP Sharp to have them resharpened, but that always took forever. I’d just as soon buy a new set.

I just ordered these blades. I’m better at making sure there are no pins on the mat than you are but not perfect. Your cool tools tips are great and I am hoping these will cut silk cleanly which even a new blade leaves bits uncut.
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 4 ай бұрын
:) I think if they can cut my sheer interfacing they should do a great job on your silk! ...Make sure your cutting mat doesn't have deep grooves in it (a big problem with Self Healing Mats) Even the sharpest blade won't cut well on a mat with deep grooves because the fabric gets pushed down into the grooves and the blade can't reach it!! (One of the reasons why I love my Big Mat... the non self healing surface stays nice and smooth ...It comes with a Mat Scraper that you can use to maintain the surface!! Here's my unboxing video so you can see how to use the scraper if you're interested! Thanks for watching kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYbXY6OXapKFfpo

(Linda) I will definitely buy them, as u mentioned they ARE pricey. Would you be so kind as to let me know why you chose the non-healing mat? the PROs and CONs? I have the self healing green one but it is not big enough and was looking to buy a bigger one. You explanations might change my mind and get what you have. thank you!!
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 4 ай бұрын
:))) My Pleasure... Self healing mats are great for light use, the blade of the rotary cutter sinks into the surface of the mat giving your great control... This "softer" surface is designed to close slits after you cut into it. The Con with this is that the cuts tend to be deeper because of the soft surface...and when it self heals, the lint that's clinging to the sides of your blade gets embedded in the mat. You can't "smooth" the surface of a self healing mat. Over time the surface can become almost "mealy". Ultimately the self healing feature shortens the life of the mat. The Big Mat is made from PVC plastic that does not self heal... It's a harder surface (that's why the rotary cutting blade should be a little loose to cut on these mats).... The only Con I've noticed about the Big Mat is that because it's white, you can see all the cut marks... so it looks a little messy after being used (for over a year)... The biggest Pro is that the surface stays smooth because you can maintain the surface with the Mat Scraper that comes with it and I don't think you can kill it... It's one of the most "jennifer proof" cool tools that I have!! Hope this helps :)

Was your steel blade brand new, just like the titanium one? It was a bit confusing as we didn’t see you putting in a new steel blade to your Olaf’s rotary cutter, it was already on there, so I’m not sure if it was an old steel one, in which case how can you compare the two?
@JSternDesigns

Sorry about that... I should have showed you how to put the new blade on... The blade I used in this tutorial is the new one. This tutorial is more about sharing a high quality replacement blade vs. comparing them... The expensive Ofla blades does work just as well as this one, they just cost more... I can tell you since this tutorial, I'm still using the same blade and it's still really sharp and cutting great! Thanks for watching

in order to make sure I just have one blade, I put my thumb and first finger on top and bottom of the center hole and slide them apart so that if there are two blades, my fingers grab the lip of the hole vs trying to slide them apart at the edge where I'll end up with sliced and diced flesh LOL.

What are the pros/cons to a non self healing mat?
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 4 ай бұрын
That's a great question!! ...The Pro is that shallow cuts will close up... The Big Con is that fibers that are on the rotary cutter blade get shoved into the cuts. As the self healing mat "heals" itself, these fibers get stuck in the cuts. Over time, the surface starts to become more grooved and the rotary cutter blade can get caught on these grooves, causing you to cut crooked! This Big Mat stays nice and smooth... Here's a tutorial that shows how to use the Mat Scraper that comes with it to maintain the surface of your Big Mat!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYbXY6OXapKFfpo Thanks for watching
