Seeing your Moon RPG case in the background makes me smile :) Best DQ to start with: popular (and definitely good) answer would be 11, but I'd say 8 on 3DS, or 5 on SNES or DS! But you can't really go wrong with that series!! Keep the great vids coming!

Lovely to see so many Dragon Quest fans in the comments! Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of the first 3 games, particularly the GBC versions, but really, any game (except 7) is a good place to start (7 is WAY too frickin' long) My personal advice for newcomers is to go with any of the DS games, with my personal favourite of those being 9, which lets you customise your party the way you want, but I know folks *Really Love* 5 for its unique story!

The general consensus on DQXI is that it's probably the best starting point, though I've been a big fan of the Monsters spinoff series since the GBC days. A new Dragon Quest Monsters game (The Dark Prince) came out last year for Switch, and it's a lot of fun. That'd be my recommendation if you're into a more Pokemon-ish experience (monster collection being the focus).

Ok so I actually cut out this part from my edited video - but I tried DQ XI on Switch and the voice acting was maddening. I may try to give it another chance and Dark Prince looks good! Thank you for the suggestions

From what I've played of the Dragon Quest series, I recommend picking any of them. They've had pretty consistently fun writing throughout the whole series so you are sure to find one you will enjoy no matter which one you choose to start with. 11 is quite nice and pretty easy to jump into since it's available on everything right now. 1 is a shorter game but still holds up well thanks to the writing imo. I haven't put a ton of time into 8 on 3ds but I can see why it's a fan favorite. Some of that writing quirkiness makes it's way into spinoffs as well, so even stuff like the builders games are easy recommendations. I have honestly not seen many series with such consistent quality, especially in jrpgs, easily recommend them. Also, the metal slime plush is 10/10 highly recommend.

I haven’t played my Switch in a while, but everytime I pick up that controller - my hands just melt into it.

Pro controller is quite comfortable! For me, the one that fits best in my hands is the dual shock 2 or 4 😅

My dream switch controller would be joycons like the splitpad compact, but with all the features of the 8bitdo ultimate, halleffect sticks, gyro, and fully remappable buttons/sticks (including axis inversion). I hear the mobapad is probably closest thing to that, but don't see many reviews that cover all its features that it supposedly has. But it is the closest in shape to the compact, being bigger joycons, which i love

Definitely recommend starting with DQ 11S. Switching between the 2D sprite art and the HD graphics was an awesome experience. You can then go back and play the rest of the series and then do the Tockle quests in DQ 11 and catch all the tiny references they make to the previous games. Also, these are absolutely adorable and I am going to buy some. Thank you for the review. Love your channel!

I'm not a dragon quest fan either, but the slime dude is pretty cute. I've been looking for an alternative to the cramped joy cons especially that d-pad looks really comfy 😮 nice review😀

Love these controllers, I picked up the blue slime ones and am contemplating getting these too. Also like everyone else, I’d recommend playing dragon quest xi first, then after that you’re free to jump into whatever game looks interesting to you. Whatever you do though, definitely go back and replay xi after you’ve become familiar with the series, it does such a great job and celebrating all the mainline dragon quest games.

i just bought the full slime controller ds4 and i love it. he sits on my desk now. worth it. also play the dragon quest monster series. new one on switch old ones on ds and gameboy.

The looks we get from our non-gamer significant others haha Dragon Questwise, probably starting with 11 is good, although going back from there is going to be weird because that game is extremely polished. Honestly, playing any of them on DS would work, too. Don't go back to play the NES ones unless you're already a fan, they're pretty archaic.

I suggest starting with the first dragon quest and playing in order. The first three are pretty short and go up in length (1 is super short, 2 is longer but still short, 3 is longer again but not long). I suggest the remakes on switch or DS!

Of course I'm a hardcore DQ fan. I don't want it, I need it. This is why you're the cool uncle, Marissa. Can't believe you got a hold of this item. Nintendo needs to step up it's game and release more merch like this in the states. If you want to start with Dragon Quest I suggest start from 3,4,5,6,9,8,7,1 and 2, in that order. Then you can Play 11. Hopefully you get to like the franchise. 👍👍

what’s your thoughts on the hori compact eevee version for $90? i love the design but $90… it’s hard to swallow lol. specificity the eevee with clear faceplate rather than the asymmetrical day/night eevee compact, its also good but the clear one is prettier xD

I think since they are not Bluetooth-based, there is no pairing process to speak of Otherwise, while the Split Pad Compact is nicer than the regular joycon, the Split Pad Pro is much more comfortable. It’s too bad the shoulders and some of the buttons on the Pro are so loose, and overall it feels cheap compared to the Compact. But it’s still much more comfortable for me for long play sessions. Anyway! Thanks for this fun look at a rare variant

I'm sure I'm late to the party here but Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Quest XI are the two I recommend. Dragon Quest XI is probably the pinnacle in terms of a polished modern take on the old-school turn-based JRPG.

asking Dragon Quest fans which game to start with is like asking Pokémon fans which game to start with. There's just so much Dragon Quest out there. The mainline games if you love JPRGs. The Monsters/Joker/Treasure series if you like the idea of monsters joining you. The Builders series is great if you like Minecraft with a bit of a story and building goals. Of the mainlines I've finished (I, II, III, IV, IX, XIS) I loved the story of IV the most so far. And XIS is great too and *very* approachable. Basically you can't go wrong with the better Horii (dragon quest writer) Edit: we need more licensed Dragon Quest peripherals in the west. Edit 2: I forgot about Heroes! If you like Dynasty Quest/Hyrule Warriors, Heroes is AMAZING! Squenix needs to bring Heroes to the west for Switch. I had to buy the Japanese version, so I don't know the story, but I'm still having the time of my life.

I stick to the first three Dragon Quest games. SNES English Translation for Dragon Quest I&II is a start. Then probably Dragon Warrior III for Gameboy Color. I just picked up Dragon Quest for my Tandy Vision One Radio Shack Intellivision Clone and it's also really great and also has a Digital Version available. I find the Raspberry Pi 4B or Pi 400 running Berryboot Retro Pi is great for Intellivision. You can even probably get a Raphnet SNES Adapter and a SNES NTT Data controller for it. I feel old.😕

Mainline series dq 5 on the ds is the first one I beat. If ya like pokemon games dragon quest monsters is an easy to recommend spinoff series, if yer a fan of mincraft dq builders is another great spinoff series. Other fun spinoff games are rocket slime on the ds and the tecmo dynasty warriors like dq warriors games
