Don't forget that Ray Manzarek -- the keyboardist -- was also playing the bass line. There was NO bass player in the Doors. The Doors turned my world upside down when they burst on the scene in 1967. This was their second album. I first heard this in September of that year, and had just turned 15. Their first album ("The Doors"), released in January of 1967, remains one of the greatest rock albums ever created. I had NEVER heard anything like this music. Don't forget that this amazing album was released just ONE MONTH after the first album of Jimi Hendrix ("Are You Experienced"). 1967 was a simply amazing year for anyone who loves rock and roll. I turn 70 this year, and every song from this album still gives me goose bumps. What awesome music this was.

I knew them all (well, not Jim though) when they played at the Starwood nightclub,in LA.They played there a few times, and were all nice guys. They were under the name "The Butts Band". John Densmore was especially nice to me. Whenever he came into the club and saw me,he told me to come upstairs for a drink when I got time. I usually did. And no,I wasnt a groupie or anything like that. I cleaned the dressing rooms every night, plus I ran the coat check.

I once was standing in line in a store behind Ray Manzarek (Doors keyboardist) and I didn’t realize I was staring but he turned around and he gave me a huge stare with his eyes exaggeratedly large. We’re about the same height. I started laughing. He started laughing and we had a pleasant conversation that had nothing to do with music. I always remember that funny face he made when I hear Doors songs, especially this one. I’m sure his soul is somewhere making magic music.

My favourite Doors song. I remember watching Lost Boys, hearing the Echo and the Bunnymen cover of this and loving it. I then found out that it was a cover of a Doors song and my sister owned a best of album. I borrowed it and the rest is history. I'm 43 and I've loved the Doors for over 30 years, despite Morrison having died years before I was born. They are truly timeless. If the Doors releases their music now as a new band they would still sound fresh and relevant. They never sounded like a 60s band compared to who and what else was around at that time.

I always think of Morrison and the Doors as the quintessential "surrealist" band. I like your observation about the juxtaposition of the "circus" vibe of the instrumentation contrasted against Jim's dark and haunting vocals. In this song that contrast is what adds to the surrealistic vibe. To me, listening to the Doors is kinda like viewing Salvador Dali paintings. Only darker. LOL Great reaction, guys!

Other great songs from this album are the title track, Love Me Two Times, Moonlight Drive and the 11 minute finale When the Music's Over. But first you've just gotta hear Riders on the Storm. The Doors were appreciated by people who were strange, outcast, intelligent, shy, or just plain odd. The Doors music does carry a touch of the carnival sound with Ray Manzarek's cadence and awkward step. Robbed Kreiger's guitar slithers up and down to invite you closer. John Densmore follows along the jaunty trail while supporting his band mates. But Jim Morrison led the march into his endarkened world of secret alphabets and lost, sometimes frightening or uncomfortable territory. Jim's voice and personality navigates a minefield of beautifully described chaos and broken love scattered like gold dust over fever dreams. His voice the only guidance and security needed to descend deeper and deeper into the subconscious. Music by the Doors open dangerous visions for others to document and explore. We are better for Jim's willing commitment to document his postcards from the edge. His next report of weird scenes should be very interesting. In the meantime, how about the longer version of LOVE ME TWO TIMES from the SOUNDSTAGE PERFORMANCES. It has a poetic intro worth noting.

I loved these guys in high school in the ‘80s. It is a very specific sound, partially thanks to Ray Manzarek’s keyboard work. They didn’t that a bass player; he played the entire bass line on a piano keyboard bass. Morrison, of course wrote most of the lyrics (he didn’t write Light My Fire, for example). So many good songs. "Riders On The Storm" was my first introduction to the Doors. Brilliant track. My school made us all sit in the hall on the last day of term to watch an overly long and dull war film. This must have been about 1974. At the end of the film, as everyone was finally allowed to leave, they played this song. For years I thought it was part of the soundtrack of that dreadful film. I was very glad to finally discover that it wasn't! [BTW the film was "The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" (1962) - a relationship heavy, dialogue driven film. Not what an 11 year old me was expecting from a war film].

The Doors were one of the very few bands that truly explored the darker segments of 60s pop culture. "People Are Strange" dipped into that, but it didn't really explore that part of it like "The End", "When The Music's Over", "Not To Touch The Earth", "Peace Frog" and others did. This band is definitely worth a deep dive.

“Jim Morrison was depressed. He went to Robby Krieger's house, they went to a canyon to watch a sunset, at which time Jim realized he was depressed because "if you're strange, people are strange." He then wrote the rest of the lyrics, which are about feeling alienated.”

Another vote for Peace Frog, it’s such a great song. Fall of ‘21 the remaining 2 Doors released a short documentary and their Hollywood Bowl concert from ‘69, it was shown one night only in theaters, Nov 4th. It was fabulous and I hope to be able to see it again sometime

Yes, great song, Sounds right out of a carnival in the Twilight Zone! For all encompassing musical trips, try their epics, When the Music's Over and The End, do the video for sure for The End to get that Vietnam era vibe. The Doors are a trip, they were part of many trips in the old days... Enjoy! 🎸

OTHER GREAT SONGS BY THE DOORS: - BREAK ON THROUGH (TO THE OTHER SIDE): First song on their first album. High-energy and is pretty much the mission statement of the Doors. - LA WOMAN: It's more of that bluesy sound you liked from the Doors on "Roadhouse Blues." - NOT TO TOUCH THE EARTH: The Doors letting that freak flag fly with a crazy/great song springing from a longer piece of Jim Morrison's poetry. One of my favorites and where Morrison's infamous nickname "the Lizard King" comes from. - THE CRYSTAL SHIP: Gorgeous, poetic, strangely delicate song from the Doors. - THE END: If you want to dive into the deep end of the Doors experience, this song is objectively their masterpiece. Knowing how much you like to be transported by songs, Amber, I'll tell you that this is one of those songs. It's not the spacy vibe of a Pink Floyd track but more of an eastern-tinged, poetic, deeply psychological music experience that def takes you along for the ride/vibe. All the Doors songs are different than what other people were doing but this one... this one is more than just a song. It's a piece of art. You should def check out the Doors performing live as well. You really get the vibe and see the stage presence. Some live performances you might like: - LOVE ME TWO TIMES: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppSkhJKfbJ6Kj6c Also features a snippet of "Texas Radio And The Big Beat" at the beginning. Morrison's magnetism on full display. - WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZOlf62tar6JoM0 Live on Danish TV. - BACKDOOR MAN/FIVE TO ONE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJXRoaKebN6Yiac Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Cover of an old blues song written by Willie Dixon with a Doors song in the middle of it.

The Doors were among the most controversial & influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly due to Jim Morrison's lyrics & voice. They had a lot of hits including "The End", "Light My Fire", "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "Love Me Two Times", "L.A. Woman", "Hello, I Love You", "Touch Me", "The Unknown Soldier", "Roadhouse Blues", "Love Her Madly", "Riders On The Storm". Sadly Jim Morrison died in 1971 at the age of only 27 but left a great legacy of music.

Never been a Doors fan, BUT ……… when I was a kid I would listen to them every Christmas. Turn on the twinkling x-mas lights on the tree, turn off all the other lights, lay down under the tree and stare up at the reflection on the ceiling. Turn on the Doors, and watch the twinkling pattern of the lights come into sync with the music and veg out. Works with almost any of their songs, especially Crystal Ships. I wore out my 45’s ! 😂

Hear, Hear! Hear it for the Strange and the Weirdo! My first magazine subscription as a child was "Weird Magazine". It was like "Mad" only weirder. As Oscar Wilde instructed: "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." This song has gone through my head at least once a month ever since it came out. Good to hear it for reals. Tusen takk! Peace on Earth.

The Circus Sound you hear is because it’s written in a minor modality. Most songs are in a major key. You can tell he fully understands the message with his inflections and finesse of his chosen vocal style. This is clearly an example of “less is more”!

What's cool about the way Jim Morrison sang the word "strange" with a descending pitch mirrored the sound of the theremin, which was an instrument known for those smooth pitch changes which almost sounded like a human vocalizing. The theremin was a very popular instrument to use in the musical scores for horror and science fiction movies around the time when this song was written, and Morrison's use of that smooth descent in pitch seems to me sort of like an homage to that.
