Hi, Thank you so much for this video as I am having exactly the same problem with my 2003 GTI that I spent a fortune over the years to maintain it because the VW dealers in my area are nothing but huge ripoff. Anyway, the transmission right now will not shift out of the first gear when the car is parked overnight or whenever the car is not warmed up. Once the car is warmed up, the transmission shifts like brand new. I took the car to dealer and they wanted over $9K to replace the transmission and some other electronics. After searching the web, I found out that other people have the same problem and it is due to these solenoids getting stuck. I am willing to work to replace these solenoids but I was told by more than one VW dealer that if I replaced the transmission fluid, which is what I was planning to do when replacing the solenoids, the transmission will likely not work after that because I never replaced the transmission fluid and I have 155K miles on the car. The reason why I never replaced the transmission fluid is because the manual said that the fluid does not need to be replaced which later on was determined to be a bad idea. My question to you is if you can tell me whether or not this is true based on your experience. One shop told me that after replacing solenoids, the transmission got stuck in reverse within few minutes of starting the car so that worries me. If this is true, what can I do short of replacing the whole transmission? Look forward to hearing from you, AJ
@CoolAirVw3 жыл бұрын
I wish people would stop spreading the false urban myth (wives tale) that changing the fliuid will make the trans fail. Its just hogwash. Change your solenoids and fluid and then throw it in the dealerships face that you fixed it and they are either stupid or crooked.

This is why giving tech help never works. Almost always a customer will say something like "does not change gears" then after I drive the car I notice some other detail that keys me in to the problem. For instance, "after warm the transmission neutrals out on 2-3 shift then a code triggers then the trans wont shift". Big difference in the detail and with the better description then I would be able to say with some certainty that your trans is shot. I'm not saying your trans is shot, nor am I saying you have the scenario I just mentioned. I'm saying that details that are not noticed or are not mentioned, or cannot be noted because you don't have a good scan tool or other equipment are why asking tech help questions doesn't get a good answer. Because a person cannot possibly give us the information needed to give a reasonable answer. Unfortunately sometimes mechanics need to gather info from the car themselves in order to have enough info to know anything.

I already fixed the speed sensor on the transmission also. The car still does not work and stalls out in reverse right away. Last time I drove it, the car didn't go past 20 mph. @@watermalanblew You failed to index the manual valve. There is a linkage behind the VB that falls into a notch in the manual valve. You didn't get the valve lined up with the linkage so it just moved to the forward (low) position so you only have low. Pull valve body, have a helper move the linkage while you watch to understand, then take a close look at the manual valve on the back of the VB then reinstall it with them indexed together.

I have posted a detailed install for this valve body and listed all the parts links on my playlist. kzbin.info/aero/PLUtVpnAFZXAyuCvXa2RAzNqcYFdbtBzYi @CoolAirVw Rm, good video, I don't know why people are scared of this transmission. I saw someone commented below about the gasket from Cobra, I ran it with no issues or leaks for the year after I installed it. Made the job much easier and less messy than using silicone. Also its good to mention that if your car still shifts hard when its hot and not just cold, it is most likely the valve body.
