I add seam allowance on the fabric, it's so much quicker. With experience you can add the allowance by 'eye' and don't even need to measure it. Also, burda produces their own copy paper and you can see the pattern lines through it because it's thin.

I have been tracing Burda patterns for years. I have never used other types of patterns. I have traced many with plastic which is ideal for tracing and preserving patterns.

As somebody who lives in Germany and learned sewing on Burda patterns, it is very uncommon to be taken by the hand throughout the sewing process. Adding the seam allowance is quite natural to me, I do it by the eye.

Interesting to see how you do this, Rachel. And to read all the comments. Back in the day I learned to sew with Burda and Knip magazines. We add the seam allowance on the fabric, just with your measuring tape and chalk. Quick, easy and precise. Maybe I should make a video showing that. Just as an alternative. It’s so interesting to read how so many fear and struggle with patterns without seam allowances (SA). It’s just a matter of what you’re used to. For me, I still struggling with patterns with SA. I have to do quite some alterations to get a decent fit and that is so much easier on patterns without (if you ask me). I miss having the stitching line. That really does have its advantages. Encourage everybody to try these patterns. Burda (and Knip) are well drafted, current, have all kinds of interesting design details and each magazine gives you 15 - 20 patterns for a comparably small price.

This is a brilliant tutorial on how to trace the patterns thank you. I love the Burda mag and I have been collecting them for months. They are I think more modern than commercial patterns. They are a really good buy. I have never got around to tracing them off yet. And also when you read the patterns some have seam allowances and some don’t. I made an absolute mess of a Burda pattern blouse and I gave away my other Burda pattern to the Salvation Army. But, I got the Lutterloh system at one of those sewing shows and with Lutterloh one needs to add the seam allowance as well. So, you've been a great help.

Okay, that looks relatively painless. I have a Burda magazine from several years ago that I have to go dig out, never did a thing with it. I have never seen this magazine but wow what a very big puzzle and great deal for that many pattern, You did an absolutely amazing job on this video. I will be on the look out for this in my store and pick it up as a someday I will be there in my skills to do but you really shorten that timeline for me and thank you!!! On a side note am 5"11' and found the couple of items I have sew up were for people at 5"6' and had fitting problems, I thought I need to add that full 6inch but when you said you add 1 I was like ok..... let me try it this way. Again your the best.

I think you need first need to figure out if you are proportional ie longer in your torso AND limbs. I am 5ft tall and proportional...and shorter than a Burda Petite. But some people have a long torso or longer legs even if they have the same overall height. Do you wear Tall tops and Tall bottoms or can you use Regular sizing for one? The Burda size chart is very complete, with a dozen measurements.You should definitely compare your body to the chart. Burda does have Tall patterns but not many so learning to alter where you need it is a useful skill to get the right fight for your specific needs. Another option is to try sewing with brands that cater to a taller body like KnipMode, a Dutch pattern magazine whose size is for 1,76cm(?) for women and I think, Sew LaDiDa who drafts for 5'8(?). Funnily enough I’ve just finished my first Burda style project! At the weekend I made dress 101 from the same issue - the pink linen dress with buttons up the side. I think you were lucky that yours was so simple - I’m out sure what level of difficulty mine was but it had about 14 pattern pieces! I found the instructions ok (I’m a pretty experienced sexist) but I did get stuck on one bit where you attached the button band. I still don’t know if i did it right but I managed to work out a way to do it! I do love their styles. It might have been worth mentioning the hem allowances - which as Hila reminded me - can be different on each pattern. Yours were about 3 cams and mine were 4cms Also the patterns don’t have as much ease as many of the big 5 do.

Also i have a ruler that has millimetres or 1/8ths of an inch showing in lines and it’s great for seam allowances on the straight bits.

Great video! I bought this issue for the same top will be very excited to see it once you have made it up. I use the same tracing wheel but tape a pencil to the edge running the inner wheel along the pattern line so the pencil traces the seam allowance out for me saving me having to go over the dented markings (hope I explained that clearly)

I can't get the magazine in Canada anymore. We live in too small of a town for stores to carry it and the company that use to distribute went bankrupt! Now the shipping from the US costs more than the subscription!

It was $169.50 Cdn for a year subscription including tax. I wrote to them myself and the subscription is much more expensive than the old distributor. I am outside North America and used to subscribe through the old US distributor, GLP News. Started having trouble with them at the time of the CA banckruptcy. Long story short, ended up getting a subscription to Burdastyle + Burda Easy (now 4 issues!) through the Fr distributor for 97+29.30 euros or a little under $200 CAN. Expecting my second magazine to be delivered but Roltek handles this so they are legit. Hope this helps!

thank you, unfortunately I've had a bad experience with burda online as the last 2 times I bought a pattern they didn't include instructions, I had to keep emailing and phoning them to send me instructions and they never did! so I ended up getting my money back, you used to be able to just download the instructions before purchasing a pattern but when they stopped that it's been a bit of a headache

What paper do you use for tracing out your patterns? I have a packet of the Burda tracing paper, it is so expensive for what it is here, so I have bought the supermarket brand of baking paper, and it works quite well. As I may have already mentioned, I remember the Burda paper patterns that didn't have a seam allowance. Next time I am at the newsagents I will have a good look at the Burda magazine, I bought a great Burda pattern last week and had to go through Sew Direct as this is one of many patterns that is not brought out to Australia its Burda 6602, #devonthreads made it and it looked great

Some people use medical paper, plastic for renovations or thin, non-fusible interfacing. As long as it is translucent enough to trace on. Although, some people use carbon paper and use the tracing wheel on the pattern sheet with the carbon and paper underneath. I don't like this as it damages the pattern sheets, IMO.

Great explanation. Like so many others I have been completely put off by the tracing. What kind of tracing paper do you use? Do you find it hard to see the coloured line through it? Once you have found the pieces in the maze, do you ever go over them with a highlighter or something to make them show up through the tracing paper?

No I never use a highlighter, I just try to focus on what I'm trying to trace and ignore everything else, I use paper from morplan, its easy to see through, but better in daylight (I filmed this at night)

If you put carbon paper underneath the pattern you're tracing, and put your pattern paper beneath all that, with your double tracing wheel you could trace out the pattern and add the seam allowance in one fell swoop. :) I don't have that kind of tracing wheel, so instead I probably spent too much on a seam allowance curved ruler. -_-
