The Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro M - better than TKL / tenkeyless? A space-saving premium gaming keyboard with an interesting alternative layout to the more common TKL layout, this board turned out to have quite a few interesting things about it. Despite not shipping with these at the moment, this one actually came with Cherry MX Green switches as well, which has been requested loads of times.
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro M right now. Sometimes, old ways are best ways, and sometimes, bringing back those ideas and improving them is even better. "

The screws are hidden under the rubber feet. You can easily pull them off, they will stick just fine even after several times of removal. I modded this board a lot.
@Chyrosran22
@Chyrosran22 7 жыл бұрын
But why, though? What happened to the good old "six screws at the back and that's it"? Why do they have to be hidden under the feet or the logo plate or the volume controls or the keycaps or whatever?
@alexanderstephan6810
@alexanderstephan6810 7 жыл бұрын
Well, once you open it the warrantary is void, so they wanted to make a little obstacle for people who have no clue what they're doing. Besides that I think it's very accessible. You will notice that once you break through the the exterior case. Everything is neatly structered with visible screws with standard phillips screws, unlike many others that use very weird torx/non standard screws. I am helping out in a pc repair shop from time to time and I've seen ridiculous stuff, especially laptops. They literally want you to throw your electronics in the trash can and make sure there's no possible way to repair it nor shipping out repair parts. This actually triggers me, since it's such a waste of resources and poor peoples money.
@Chyrosran22
@Chyrosran22 7 жыл бұрын
There is a warranty void sticker over one of the screws; surely that would be enough of an indication. People know there will be a screw there, and it's fine. But beneath the feet? And often those don't reattach all that well, or they'll start to leak that sticky crap. The feet on my Logitech don't reattach at all anymore after just once. Corsair hide theirs beneat the logo plate and the volume controls ffs.

ugh, that sucks. atm i use an older matias and i've been curious in getting a TKL with RGB, but being able to disassemble the matias to replace the switches inside (with newer matias-brand switches) has been instrumental in its longevity and in it paying itself back where i would've had to buy a whole new board if it were a rubber dome. i've been considering buying one of those corsair RGB TKL boards, even if cherries are a different click feel, i am largely just curious about experiencing it myself, since i've been using these simplified whites for 6 years now. my mouse is RGB too so i kinda want it to match, just for aesthetics. i'm also interested in real USB-hub passthrough where it goes over a second cable now that i have a proper hub going into my desktop, and the "volume cylinder" zone on those corsair boards made me feel quite drawn to those models. in long typing sessions, the "singing" that alps switches have just kind of.. bother me a lot. matias had claimed they'd fixed that so i had assumed that whenever i ended up replacing the entirety of the inside of this board it'd be gone, but with your review of the new matias switches, you showed the singing is still there, just quieter. so that further cemented my desire to give cherries a try (even if i returned the keyboard a few weeks later if it disappointed me), despite you pointing out the difference in tactile-strength and click-sound. but, damn, if it's a huge pain in the arse to desolder a switch or two when necessary, that's really offputting... but more and more having my numpad there is bothering my back, having to twist to the side to align my hands with the alphanumeric part, since the mouse has to line up nicely with my shoulder. often i lately slide the whole keyboard to the side such as typing this comment, but then the mouse isn't really usable. this is despite myself actually using my numpad a few times a day, i still am interested in seeing how i do without (it's nothing extensive, largely just noting times of day to keep track of meds, so really just 4 digits.). this layout where the arrows are in the numpad instead is very interesting, too, though. ah, sorry for the ramble, i'm just not sure if i've commented on one of your videos before, so i had a lot of thoughts on this subject. i do really appreciate how thorough your videos are.

One noteworthy quirk not in the review is that the nav cluster keys and print screen/scroll lock/pause keys are shifted down one row from their usual placement (the latter are also shifted over one column. Not a big deal since print screen is the only useful key there). In practice, I don't find this overly cumbersome since I use my QF TK at home, but it does slow me down ever so slightly when I try to do real work with it. No gap between end and up is a bit weird, plus I have muscle memory for holding shift or ctrl in combination with the nav keys, so I have to look when using them sometimes. I do wish there were more boards with this layout. It really is a great compromise. Great board for taking to LAN parties.

This is cool stuff! I almost always use the num pad as my nav cluster, even on keyboards with both present. I find that toggling num lock is more efficient than using the nav cluster because your hand doesn't need to move from the arrow keys to "End" or something like that. You still have to move your hand to get to/from the num pad of course, but you are using a single button to "toggle" between the two hand positions used for a normal nav cluster.

I had the previous green lit model that I used for quite a while - it was the board that taught me how to type without bottoming out; something I couldn't manage with lighter keys. Once I got used to it, I found it more relaxing to type, as I never had to use the full force. The TK layout is brilliant, I wish topre would make one...

The 00 should be the 0, like on a phone, and the 0 should be a tab. It's bullshit that such an important spreadsheet button is only on the other side of the keyboard. Other than that, I absolutely love this idea of the modern navless 80% and I would love to see it more.

That numlock bit made me wish that newer keyboards would just make the numlock key a backspace. It is the only thing keeping the numpad from being perfect. Right now you have to turn off numlock, then use the delete key... which is just as far away from the numlock button as the dedicated delete key is on the nav cluster!

I have the MX Blue variant of this keyboard, and there's one other flaw I think should be mentioned: In the custom assigned backlight mode, you cannot adjust the brightness of the backlights. With the whole board light mode, you can control the brightness with F2 and F3. Those keys don't do anything with the custom assigned mode. I wonder if the SDK Cooler Master offers would allow you to program what you were talking about, where the lights change as a function of numlock. I agree that the vertically stacked lock lights aren't helpful. I also wish that they had assigned other useful functions to the 1 and 3 keys. It would be nice to have a Tab key on that side of the board, for example, and I'm sure there is another function you could put there. Maybe escape? Also note that numbers 4-9 on the numpad are media control keys; Stop, rewind, volume down, play/pause, fast forward, and volume up respectively. There is no hardware mute key, and they're in a slightly unusual arrangement.

You should really try out gatistotles (aristotle stems inside gateron housing) switches, I actually use 67g actuation springs with milky gateron housing and aristotle stem since milky gateron housings make tactility sharper imo. Personally I find them even nicer for typing in feel than brand new SMK Monterey switches but I do still prefer the sound of SMKs.

This is exactly the sort of keyboard I'm after, "nav-less" I'd never even heard of it, and the integration looks nice! Yes, it would be better if they somehow made number mode and navigation mode more identifiable (colours would be good, even illuminate from the bottom instead! and have the nums/navs at opposite ends (top/bottom) of the keys!). I'll be researching this type of keyboard more. Thanks! (I've just watched no less than 10-12 of your reviews! Love them! thanks!)

That layout seems pretty good. While I don't use the numpad a whole lot, I definitely appreciate having one. Whenever I need to input more than a few digits I instantly go for it. If I had to use something smaller, it would be something like this. I don't think an old-style nav cluster is all that bad, though. I'd just miss the more accessible delete and down arrows. You can rest your thumb on 2/down to replace easy pivoting with the middle finger, but a more natural position for it is on the left half of 0/insert. If you turned 5 into a down arrow, that would do it.

I really like your revew, and you pretty much nailed the pros and cons of CM boards. I've got the CM Masterkeys Pro S RGB and you're right about the board chow issues with a white backplate. I also started to develop some pretty bad key shine very fast. That said, the RGB model does allow you to program different colors for each key, which I have found very useful. And I did it using the CM software. The software isn't great but isn't that bad either. There's no programming required to use the software and it flashes the board when you save, allowing you to maintain the programming regardless of the computer you use with the board. Might want to give it a try. Great review and awesome channel!

It's really sad this nav-less design didn't catch on, I had one of those for a while, until it broke, but my Keychron K4 is much worse, no spacing between the nav or the numpad key-cluster making it very hard to locate the keys, and removed the screenshot button for a retarded light toggle button you never use, Luckily the GMMK2 is giving the layout some love, and I might swap in a better switch like a Kailh Jade so they last more than two minutes with cat hair in them. I think the reason these never fully caught on is because the keycaps are non-standard, a TKL, or 1800 design are keycap compatible (for the most part anyway) with your standard 103 design, despite this the K4 doesn't have the nav keys printed on the numpad and I for the life of me forgot what they're supposed to be after using this 96% for 4 years.

Does the double 00 have a finger bump? I like backlighting, and don't mind white-only (though RGB is better), but I dislike light bleed between the keys. I'd rather a matte black back plate. I love my WASD Code with MX Greens - and yes, my fingers are indeed tiny hammers. I am looking into hunting down a model F, but am curious as to the feel of buckling springs compared to the greens in terms of actuation force. Reading, its seems as though the buckling springs are on the order of the Cherry MX Blues in terms of force, which has me a little worried - I _really_ like the 80g actuation level. Just curious, how would you compare the greens to buckling springs? Great channel, btw I've been binging on it for the past couple days!

No review of the Leopold FC980M/C forthcoming? I do have both the CM Quickfire TK and the FC980M and the Leopold's seperate arrow cluster makes it easier to deal with day to day than the Quickfire. Then again the stock keycaps are short, so it is not as comfortable to use o-ring dampeners than the Quickfire.

I was searching for a tkl keyboard because I needed the space, but I really liked the numpad. I finally bought the Logitech G Pro Keyboard, and this video makes me feel stupid that I never thought of looking this up before buying one. The G Pro is really good tho, so only partial regrets.

How heavy do the cherry mx greens feel from the blues? I know they are around 80g actuation force, but no one had really done a video to compare the switches to different things to give an idea.

The only thing i find wrong with the numpad is that numlock is way to acceptability and minus - is way to hard to reach so i would move the buttons over 1 and place the numlock in the very corner also i like those laptops which have the page up and down next to the arrow keys makes navigating the web easier but that is more of a personal preference

Seems like the ideal keyboard for people who play arma 3. Small enough to not take up a lot of room, but still has all those keys you need for the game without needing to make macros.

It was difficult to choose which keyboard I would choose, but your video helped me choose, I'm from Brazil and I've watched it 4 times to understand your videos (it's not your fault, of course: D). The hardest choice here is because the value gets high because of taxes, and since this would be my first mechanical keyboard, I wanted it to be the right choice. I chose the brown switch, Masterkeys Pro M White Leds Sgk-4080-kkcm1-br. I read that it was a good first choice. Sorry for the english of google translate

In my experience, everyone likes brown switches. Most people, after having spent a decent amount of time with different switch types, will develop a preference for something else, but everyone is still happy to use brown switches for a long time. Its certainly a huge step up from rubber domes.

I dislike keyboards that default to 1000 Hz polling rates. It makes mechanical defects easier to see with double key presses. Not to mention the extra precision creates a lot of inconsistency in rhythm games. I prefer 250 Hz polling even on Taiko, which is a very precision based game. It makes the key presses feel much more consistent.

I kinda like the half 0 and 00. on my daily driver I have th 0 split, with a . beside it then an enter and a + with the 3 other operators above it in a single unit fashion, with num lock above the left arrow key which freezes up the top row for pf keys which I use for back and forward, volume up and down. I alo have layer 2 set in basically the same way the cooler masters is. I personally think that is the best solution to the num pad.

I have laptop that has two keys next to the up arrow that act as page up and page down it's really useful when scrolling compared to having them way up by the delete key but too bad the standard layout doesn't allow for that and it's the standard which means on this keyboard if you could program the one and three keys as page up page down it would be way more useful oh well

I'm pretty sure you can toggle profiles on numlock via some simple autohotkey scripts. I.e. listen to numpad down > lauch software > change profile, and similar way to toggle back again when numlock being off (you can get info via GetKeyState, if numlock is active or not).

There are sdk for this board (if you want to go beyond basics) and profile switching is done via fn +1/2/3/4. so you can just switch between those via SpecialKeys (those are virtual keys send when you press fn+ combos). Same when like you did with numpad arrows and delete key, you can do second profile without them lit up and save it, then just switch between them depend on numlock status.

I have seen nav cluster less layouts before but this showed me how "stupid" tkl is. I never really thought about it but the number block really is more useful than the navcluster. I have missed the numblock in the past but going TKL -> 65% never missed any keys.

Been wanting to give Cherry greens a try for awhile now since I prefer heavier switches. I got a MF68 with Gateron Greens to try Gat's version out & really like them but they feel lighter than 80g compared to the Cherry whites & custom 80g Cherry blacks I made. What is your take on the differences between Cherry & Gateron greens? I'm trying to decide if chasing down enough Cherry Greens for a 65% build would be worth it, or if just getting the readily available Gat greens & throwing in some 80g gold springs I have would be a better bet?

@robr640
@robr640 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, you may want to give them a try some time they have a pretty nice feel. I did a little digging & found out that they are rated at 80g bottom out force not actuation force like Cherry. So it would put them in between Cherry blues & greens as far as weighting goes, but they are noticeably heavier than blues. Makes for a pretty unique switch IMO. Although I think I am gonna order some Cherry Greens for an upcoming build after finding the weighting info of both. I also found out that mechanicalkeyboards.com sells Cherry Greens so it won't be as much of a pain as I thought to get them thankfully. Although they are a bit pricey for switches there.

I have a CM storm quickfire pro from it's release date, it is full size. I love it. I have the same type of key manufacturing process, and I use mine daily, and the number pad gets used, but good news, there is zero signs of wear after nearly 5 years of heavy use, even the space bar which has QUICKFIRE etched into it looks brand new. Nothing special, but it was also among cheapest at the time, and has held up brilliantly. It even seems that some of the cabling issues the board in this video had are none existent with mine, mine goes through an s bend before going straight out, so you can't pull it out, and the USB cable is locked tightly, actually hard to get it all the way in, it has to click then it's locked in. The MX switches do smooth out over time as well. The difference between the keys I type on vs say the scroll lock key is noticeable, much smoother as it is worn in, never even lubed them, just keep them clean. Scroll lock is still scratchy like a new switch. Really, I just wanted to say board works perfect still, and the keycaps show no sign of wear whatsoever, so don't worry about that. Whatever process CM uses, it is durable. Mine still looks/works like new, and is easy to dissemble.

oh, that's very interesting about the scratchiness going away. i have simplified whites atm, though the ones in the alphanumeric area's click feels a lot subtler than, say, home and end do. it is 6 years old so i suppose it shouldn't be too surprising. atm i'm interested in trying an mx blue TKL board, though i don't know how soon i'd actually be buying one.

Laureano Alfaro I've bought one of this just a couple of days ago (care very little for RGB with my keyboard, in fact I hope there were more only white options like this one and with real WHITE) , I'm really liking it, thought I'm having just an small issue that anyway concerns me. From time to time randomly, (is hard to detect in fact),. the LEDs go out for a milisecond and return...what can it be? I didn't find anything while googling it. If anyone experienced such issue, please tell me how do you fix it, thanxs in advance!

As always, great review. Although I understand this is a better "TKL" type keyboard due to the included numpad, I do feel that once you start using it for actual number entry, you might get issues due to the lack of "native" navigation cluster. For example: I'm often working in Excel etc and to navigate around the spreadsheet/cells, I always use the nav cluster. Being able to immediately switch between the nav cluster and the number cluster without each time needing to hit the Numlock button is a luxury/comfort I wouldn't want to give up. Nevertheless, i understand it's a compromise and that if you really want all flexibility, you simply use/buy a standard 105 key keyboard. Anyway, great review!
