Dude this series has been so useful! You did an amazing job! Back in October I upgraded my PC to a 3900x and a 5700xt. However, things got so toasty in my Cougar QBX using the stock cooler and low profile fans that I started using an outside fan to cool my components and stop my PC from overheating and shutting down while gaming. I just recently got the NR200 and was looking for some information on good aftermarket coolers and case fans. I was considering liquid cooling but after watching your videos I decided to purchase the Noctua NH-C14S and 3 Noctua NF-A12x25's. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much cooler things are! Basically, there is no difference at all between a highend air cooler and a matching water cooler. That's the reason I prefer the Noctua, no danger of leaks. My DAN A4 has caused me within 3 years the same problem twice. It is so tight, that the cables got a loose contact over time. At my search for a great replacement case I came accross your video series with the NR200. I bought it with the Noctua NH-U12A

Yes- on the rad panel, however you only have two screws of space to tighten it down, unless you drill more holes.

Great video series! I am planning to move my system from a Fractal Define C Mini case to this one and changing the Noctua tower cooler i have now for a Kraken X53. Im planning also to use my 2x120mm Noctuas as bottom intake for my oc’d Radeon 5700 and the Sickleflow fans as top exhaust fans, as the only model available in Finland is the 200p version :) I also have 2x140mm Noctuas that i will re-use from my Fractal case instead of the Kraken’s regular fans. Hopefully it will be a cool SFF build :)

Machines & More the major concern would be triple slotted cards as that might prevent installing bottom fans. I wonder if slim fans would work or just let the card itself pull the air from the bottom 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi, I have a i5-11600k occked at 5.1ghz. The cpu is cooled by a DeepCool Caste 280 AIO (Max 81° in 30 min. Cinebench stress test) The AIO has the stock fan (DeepCool TF140 S)............ what's best 140mm radiator fan I can mount on radiator to boost AIO performance? I watched some comparison between Noctua, Phanateks and others and Phanateks seems the best, but thsi comparison are on 120mm version, and I'm looking for 140mm.......... I really wanted to go asus b550i with c14s using 120mm mounted on the bottom so I can use the psu at the sfx spot and 2 exhaust top and 2 intake fans on the side. Do you know, is the retail package of the c14s provide the fan bracket for 120mm fan or is the provided 140mm fan usable with a12x25 fan? Using the 140mm fan on the pull side of c14s with the asus b550i/x570i will shift the psu to the front panel or the atx position so i want to avoid this if possible.

Hey! You'll have to request the clips from Noctua for a 120mm fan, just be prepared to provide purchase receipt for their confirmation. Just to note- you can use the A14 fan underneath if you route your cables elsewhere, and not in the gap between the motherboard and PSU. Then I'd just put a 120mm fan on the radiator panel. I did not see a meaningful change with two fans on the radiator panel. Too much intake is a bad thing also. Good luck!

Thanks for the video! In the end I went for a Kraken X63 for this one. Never had an AIO so I honestly wanted to tinker with it and just experiment a little, plus I would like to undergo some overclocking on my i7 10700k and I felt safer with more cooling headroom. Having said that, I'm not against air cooling, and if things don't go as I like, I may just go back to it :)

There’s a couple of solutions. A few folks have modded the side panel by widening the holes to accommodate the heatpipes on a tall tower, otherwise a short tower like a 92mm or short Cryorig H7 would be a good solution for using the panel.

Hi! If you're using the vented panel: Noctua C14S with an extra fan under the heatsink; Noctua U12A are all good choices for a Ryzen 9 and should give you enough for light overclocking. AIO- the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240 tested in quite nicely and will give you the most overhead for overclocking. All these come in at around the same cost of $100 US so it's really up to you if you want to deal with the extra tubes and size of the liquid cooler.

The Artic 240 or 280 AIO is really a good option. Not pretty, but great performance and great price. Perfect for this case in my opinion.

Dude, that is one sick TU150 build and can really appreciate how the lights highlight the NF-A12s! I've got my cooler setup exactly the same way (1x exhaust fan from the U12A on the rear) and am diving into detailed testing now. I'm guessing you have another NF-A12 as an intake? I've had the TU150 awhile and meant to jump on it a few months ago to get all the thermal testing done but got sidetracked with the NR200 testing. Enjoy the NR200!

Probably wouldn’t do much, but probably wouldn’t hurt either- unless it’s right up against the heatsink or the fan, in which case it would interfere. It’s not terribly loud but does add a little noise.

I’m back! I finally took the time to transplant my PC parts from a Lian li Tu150 to a NR200P with vented panel. I disassembled everything while managing to keep the CPU cooler (Scythe Ninja 5) on my motherboard (Aorus Z490i ultra) but I immediately ran into a big issue. Because the NR200 cannot accommodate a 120mm at the back and because the exhaust fan of the cooler does need to stay flush with the back of the case, it doesn’t fit. I’ve rewatched all your videos as well as a few others and I had completely missed that detail. None of the tower coolers you covered actually require having a fan flush with the back of the case, hence them fitting. I found a guy on Reddit who managed to fit a Ninja 5 in a NR200 but he only managed to do it because his motherboard doesn’t have a heatsink and so he was able to bring the back fan lower than the top of the IO shield. I wish I had noticed it earlier but now I understand why the NR200 ships with a 90mm fan! All medium/high performance coolers seem to have sone sort of clearance issue, either with the top fans, the side bracket or the PSU mount. Should cooler master had made this case 3-5mm wider, it would have been one of - if not the most - versatile sff case. As is though and leaks potencial apart, I feel that this case is far better suited for water cooling. It’s disappointing but I am considering re-transplanting everything back to the Lian li Tu150 which I believe is a better suited case for air cooling. If anyone in London, UK is interested in a white NR200P, let me know ;) This thing is heavy so I am not shipping it though!

Yikes! Have you tried it with just one fan? Might surprise you depending on what chip you’re cooling. Would hate to see you give up now and since I am still slowly testing through TU150 thermals, I am seeing results at least a few degrees worse, of course not apples to apples yet since I am not using the glass panel yet.

Machines & More The problem is really that rear 120mm fan. The cooler fits with the front fan only and a 90mm fan would fit at the back. However, I guess that cooling performance and noise would take a hit. I’ve been debating a custom loop vs air cooling for a few weeks now while I was waiting for a sf750. (Got it finally!) I really want to use the TG so... While I’m still waiting for a 3080, if I go with the Fuma 2 for 3900x (x570i aorus) should I intake from the rear or exhaust? And is it worth switching the scythe fans for Noctua A12x25?

Woohoo! If you’re running or planning on a 3080, I would definitely run a rear intake. The recommendation to run the cooler as an exhaust is really for moderate TDP GPUs, and the 3080 is squarely out of that category. Stock fans are OK at stock clocks. All core OC on the 3900X is definitely fan upgrade territory. The issue isn’t so much that the fans are bad, they’re just capped at 1200RPM. Arctic P12, Noctua’s P12 Redux, are all good lower cost alternatives that should work fine. A12x25 is the best but come at a cost.

I just ordered a 5900x and hoping my NH-L12S with a top mounted NF-F12 and a NF-S12 side intake will suffice. There is a couple millimeter gap between the two fans. I have a Cougar QBX which is similar to the NR200, I was wondering if I am be able to fit a C14-S, or if anyone else has used my setup before.

Well, by virtue of being three years old and still running, as well as you knowing its history, absolutely. If it hasn't failed thus far, chances are it will keep on going. It's still too early to get a long term feel for the ML240L V2, but it is certainly a unit that's priced well.

My personal build 👍 140mm won’t fit at the bottom or top, only on the side panel. For the heatsink- the reason is when noise normalized, the NF-A12x25 actually meets and beats the A14’s performance, with a more pleasing noise pattern. As a case fan, RPMs are low enough that it isn’t a huge difference.

Yes, should be no problem. The sockets on Strix boards are a little lower so you might even get better top fan compatibility.

Just did a NR200 build: 3950X, 6800XT (triple slot!). Had water-cooling initially, but it was too cramped inside so I swapped it out for air. Managed to squeeze in a couple of 15mm fans under the GPU with literally a mm of clearance. Wifey using it for gaming so I don't think the 3950X will be pushed very hard, apart from a few cores, so I'm not too worried about temps. GPU temps are insanely good. I've really gone off water-cooling now.

Over been subscribed since you're first nr200 video. I'm planning on a build with fill size atx seasonic 850 watt psu, s14s. Any advice? Do you think that c14s would also got in ncase m1? I have both cases and I am absolutely hell bent I'm using a full sugar atx psu no matter what.

ATX PSUs will fit, just be aware of GPU limitations since they sit low. If you can 3D print CM has also made a bracket model available. The C14S isn’t as good in the NCase compared to the NR200, since it has a top fan limitation. Also the NR200 top fan adjacent to the C14S helps it too. The 240 AIO in the M1 is by far the better choice if needed.

Just finished my build in this with a 3080 FE, it fits just fine, plenty of space for the GPU. Gotta just cable manage like a boss to make it not a mess with an X52 in there along side the 6 fans and 3080 FE. Took me longer to get this case than it did the 3080, which I feel lucky for.

Depends, “2.5” I would say probably fine. With a Strix 5700XT which is getting to that “3 slot” thickness I could not get the fans to spin without interference.

Because you mentioned silence, I would get a 240 all in one. The Liquid Freezer 2 has very good out of box noise levels, as does the Cooler Master ML240 Illusion. Either of these at low fan speeds will be better than something like a U12A, and they can take advantage of the large air intake from the side panel.

Last question: In case I wanted to make use of the TG panel, what would be my best choice (even tho its not the best) for cooling ? Once again im not using a dedicated GPU in case that makes any change in the distribution. I might go for a Intel 11400 in the end since its actually cheaper and available right now without having to go into Aliexpress ( European here ) Thank you so much

Cheers! Well, I think the Fuma 2 is worth a shot, I know it's spec'd at 155mm, CM's limit on the NR200P is 153mm, so if we're talking about 2-3mm of tolerance, it might work. Anecdotally I've been seeing user builds with the Fuma 2 fit in. I would tend to shy away from the C14S in a TG case since it's intaking pretty close to the solid panel, but there is an open rear next to it so it may not be all bad. Still though, I think a tower would be better with the TG. As for fans, Noctua does make a "Chromax" or black A14, so that would be the natural swap.

That’s truly a tough question, so this will just be my speculation: NR200 w/ c14s will have more airflow and therefore be able to run it’s fans at a lower speed while getting good temps. The only downside is that since there is so much airflow, the sound of the fans can leak out. The nhd15 fans on the air cooler are bigger so they honestly might be able to spin at the same speed or lower to get the same airflow, that is if it was in the NR200. From the videos I’ve watched, Noctuas 140mm fans are subpar in both cooling and noise when compared to other 140mm fans. The TU150 also has less airflow so the fans would have to run faster to get the same temps as if it were in the NR200. Sadly, the NR200 doesn’t support the nh-d15. So we won’t know the true answer. I’m kind of all over the place with this but in short: Temps in the NR200 will be better. On the other hand, there will be less noise leaking out of the TU150, but there’s a strong chance the fans could be spinning at an annoying frequency depending on the speed you have them at because they will have to compensate for the lack of airflow.

If you pop the top cover off- take a look at the top frame that the side panel clips into. From the inside you'll see some holes that are for securing the side panel (you'll see corresponding holes on the side panel too, these are right next to the studs on the side panel that slot into the clips). The case includes extra screws that are designed for this purpose. Just run two screws from the inside and lock the panel down. Hope that helps!

I currently have an all noctua build: x2 120mm slim bottom intake, 140mm side mounted (zip tie) intake, 120mm top exhaust above my u12a set to push pull for my 3700x. I know I'm way past the point of diminishing returns but with my system fans and cpu fan @ an inaudible curve my 3700x only gets to 42c on average at idle.

Most of them won't even leave room for bottom fans it seems. Would also be great to find a card suitable for deshrouding in the NR200!

I wonder what the performance would be using three 25mm thick fans instead of the slim + 92mm fan at the back. That surely would increase cooling performance, right? Just checking, was there any reason why you didn’t test it in a flipped orientation?

something you may not have considered with tall air coolers.. is to use shorter motherboard standoffs. I havent checked exactly. But i think the supplied ones are ~8-10mm and you can get 4mm ones which would give ~+4mm clearance to tall coolers : )

My Wraith Prism wasn't overly loud, and it would peak out at 65 degrees. But my 280mm radiator AIO tops out at 44 degrees, and it's almost completely silent.

You may get extra scrutiny with the AIO from security, just a thought. I don’t think the liquids will be an issue, might get swabbed but you never know. Personally I’d make do with a low profile cooler if possible for the reduced weight and zero chance of leakage (not that I think it would burst in cabin pressure, otherwise folks in Santa Fe, NM would have a hard time ever using an AIO). Just a hassle if it were to sustain some sort of damage in transit that caused it to leak. Tower coolers would be fine, except manufacturers always tell you to take it off to reduce strain on the mobo.

Haven't watched the video yet but I originally installed a low profile noctua cpu cooler in the nr200 then decided to buy a 240mm aio and I hated it. The tubes bent too much and had too much pressure against everything. Then it was impossible to install on the top of the case so I went for the side but that made it annoying to open the case later. Mine also came with a bunch of rgb wires and cable management is hard enough so long story short I took it out and swapped it with what I had before. I just won't overclock my cpu. Then I added 7 slim noctua fans instead. Thing stays chilly

Will you be getting an Nvidia 3000 series card to test in the NR200? The unique airflow of the 3000 series cards prompt these questions: I'd be interested if bottom fans will still help, or whether bottom fans could interfere with the airflow dynamics of air entering the underside of the 3000 series FE card. For instance, if a bottom fan delivers air either slower or faster than the 3080 ideally wants air to enter itself, could that produce turbulence? I wonder if it would be better for the 3000 series card to suck in ambient air i.e. no bottom fans. I also wonder if the larger size of the 3080 will interfere with AIO cables, influencing the decision between a 240mm or 280mm AIO. I also wonder if the Noctua U12A can cope with the 3000 series cards. (Unfortunately, I can't get the C14S at the local store that will do my build).

Trying on the FE but the retail launch has been a bit of a mess! I'm hesitant on AIBs but at this point few of us are getting anything yet from the regular retail outlets. The reason I'm hesitant is because those heatsinks are ginormous, which precludes any bottom fans, also if you are limited for airflow at the bottom, it's going to be choked for air. Also, a lot of the cards are long, which, despite being compatible with the case, will really limit cable management and space efficiency in the case. A hybrid card would be ideal for this case.

@@MachinesMore I’ll be looking forward to your conclusions about FE vs AIB. The review by Techtesters said that the MSI and ASIS were cooler and quieter than the FE, because the larger heatsink made them run cooler and quieter. I speculate that if the AIB cards inherently run cooler and quieter than the FE, then that might compensate for not having extra bottom fans in the NR200? Also, in terms of fluid dynamics of the airflow, I imagine that, to avoid air turbulence, the airflow of the bottom fans would somehow have to ‘match’ the airflow that the GPU fans desire. I’m speculating here, but is it possible that if the bottom case-fans are either too slow or too fast, relative to the GPU fans, it could cause problems of turbulence? It makes me wonder whether it’s best to let the GPU fans just suck in air at the rate that’s best for their fans, rather than adding bottom case-fans to the NR200. It’s akin to the situation of the airflow from the 92mm side case-fan having to be “in harmony” with the fans of the CPU aircooler. Another issue I’m curious about is whether the GPU supports, that are supplied with some of the larger AIB cards, will fit in the small space where the bottom fans would be. I suspect these support arms may not fit in the NR200, but it’d be good to get confirmation.

The AIBs didn't radically redesign coolers, just really really upped the mass of the heatsink to compensate for the higher TDP. The reason I was hesitating on the AIB cards was that most of them were really long, or really thick, which is just a brute force approach. The FE design was more elegant but who knows when we'll see one in hand. You're absolutely right that the fans are going to be a problem though for AIBs since the fans will be interfering with each other unless they are synced. This is why deshrouding often works well in a small space, essentially you can just use one set of powerful fans to do double duty of case ventilation and heat exchange off of the GPU heatsink.

hey machines, great vid and detailed study, NR200P builder here want your opinion on a cooling setup : ( verified all component clearance with fittings and all) cpu only cooling : mini pump res combo : corsair XD3 RGB (mounted on PSU backplate) and any CPU waterblock (maybe corsair for tha sweet RGB) left of the case : 92 mm 4,5 cm thick alphacool rad with a noctua black swap NF-A9 PWM (not sure of ex/intk with push/pull or not) second cooling (still for cpu only) : bottom of the case 240 rad (slim) with no fans .....on top of it the GPU will be helping pass air throught the fins. i think it could work with the top fan in exhaust making such a negative pressure than air will be pulled into the case and help cool the cpu even without the gpu fan working. I imagine this setup configuration because it will offer the best overall visual of the components, while providing what i hope will more than enough to cool a 250 w cpu overclock ( at least 150 w dissipation for the thick boi 92 rad, then the lazy boi 240 only have to deal with the 100 w remaining.... also it will be all watercooled ready ( just add a GPU block and 2 fans on the 240 and it's done) what do you think ?

Hey! That’s an interesting idea. If you want it to work you’ll have to run every fan in exhaust- top, rear, all creating a vacuum to semi passively intake through the bottom. Additionally I would seal off every vent and the gaps on the top filter with tape, because those will all be more attractive locations for air intake- you’ll want the bottom rad to be the only option for intake (even seal off the gaps around the rad if there are any). If you’re OK with your GPU taking in hot rad exhaust then I think it’s worth a shot. For sure the 240 will still be the bigger source of heat exchange regardless of thickness. Two Noctua NF-A12s at 1200-1500 RPM at the top will do the trick. Another thought is- since it’s CPU only, why not just ditch the 92mm rad, run the GPU vertically and put fans on the bottom rad? Then you could even go with a slightly thicker 40mm rad and 25mm fans, instead of what I’m assuming is the XSPC TX240... I think your system would be better cooled that way, only thing is you won’t see your CPU block. Based on the TDP I’m guessing you’re cooling a 10700K or 10900K for an all-core OC so if you were to do your first option but with fans on the bottom, and loop in the GPU, with the 92mm rad you just might have enough headroom for a 200W GPU (not sure which you’re running).

@@MachinesMore hoa cool, two out of two answers man, really awesome. ok : let's try the workaround to fool proof the build if it's good with you. 1 you sayin' the 92 mm rad should be a exhaust push/pull to maximize negative pressure inside the chassi --> Q : i'm concerned with the rad recycling hot air and loosing performances.. what do you think ?? 2 for the top fan exhaust i plan on using the LIan li unifans, proven by Jayztwocents to have absolutly bonker air pressure...and beautifull rgb with the aura motherboard i already have purchased. what is your opinion on that ? 3 regarding your question for front mounted GPU... i plan on using an colorful vulcan 3080, with the screen on the side to check for temps and others systems info (vram, gpu, cpu, and maybe a little GIF animation in between to add bang, the plan is to allow maximum visibility of all the others components i will spend money on, ( cpu block, motherboard, royal ram etc ) so bottom gpu is a must. but i have plan, maybe for summer if it get too hot to allow an other config with vented side pannel and front facing GPU 4 for the total 450 w heat estimated, what do you think the temps will be ( i'm good until i see above 75/80 c for cpu and max 70/75 c gpu ) and i plan on allowing a dynamic overclock to not peg the CPU (10900k undervolted) at mac tdp constantly 5 as for my work scenari....i plan gaming at 2k high fram rate ( so cpu at 50/60% tdp max and gpu almost max ) work with video editing and illustartor / photoshop all that i think the total tdp will be shared quite well in many usecases ..unless i want to be stupid and render a blender scene while gaming a very demanding game... sorry for long answer time and maybe poor english i'm in france :) and needed to readproof my answer for bloodstains !

Great analysis! I am going for air cooler but will use CRYORIG h7-QL Quad Lumi RGB instead so that I can use the TG panel without hitting the glass. Also can enjoy the cool RGB effect. The cooling may not be as good as Noctua though.

Check out his previous video on air cooling for the 3080 FE, his thoughts were the C14S would be best for the unique design, however I would also say an AIO would work well (I have a Kraken X63 in my NR200)

I really think a top down style like the C14S will limit the interaction between CPU and GPU thermals, especially considering the direction that the FE 3080 will be exhausting in. With a tower, on one side you're intaking hot air, on the other, you're fighting the exhaust from the fan and keeping the warm air around the GPU. Today I have been trying to get one to test but seems like few of us will end up with anything today :/

Absolutely. The direction of the exhaust on the GPU matters much less for side intaking rads and side intaking air coolers. Tower coolers have a stronger interdependence with the GPU for thermals.

In general? Or in the case? In general the U12A is superior. However, the airflow pattern really favors the C14S in the NR200. Similarly the C14S>U9S in the NCase M1.

Gigabyte have just updated the specs of their Master/Xtreme Aorus 3080 cards: L=319 W=140 H=70 mm. The NR200 specs show a limit of 60mm but there’s still quite a bit of space at the bottom. Do you think a 70mm thick card will fit without the fans being too close to the bottom panel?

That's a HUGE heatsink/cooler. I'm really not liking the dimensions for the AIBs, seems like with conventional cooler designs the best they can do is oversize the cooler and hope for the best. I measured roughly 75mm, but I'm guessing that card would be practically touching the bottom panel. It's well ventilated but I'd imagine the airflow would not be optimal. That is, if you can get one anyway :)

Machines & More Thanks a lot for the details. With the GPU that close to the bottom of the case, I guess I wouldn’t need any additional bottom fans! However, do you think that it would be noisy or that the GPU would struggle to pull the air needed? I tried to get a 3080 FE card yesterday but like many, I saw them going from ‘notify me’ to ‘sold out’ in 1ms. At some point, I even managed to add one to my cart but when I clicked on checkout, it didn’t go through. The huge heatsink of the Aorus cards would go really well with my huge Ninja 5 cooler but Gigabyte said yesterday that they’re still working on it and that these will be available later on. Anyway, like you said, I will be lucky to get any 3080, if I ever see one in stock. Hopefully someone will be sending you one for testing in the NR200. Thanks again for sharing all your NR200 videos. I'm still trying to get the cooling system situation... ugh! I have the case come this week but my setup is going to be, ( I can't believe I spent this much)!? Basically, I'm going to be running a 5950x w/ 32GB (TBD but Trident Z is the front runner), 3080 as it stands. I'm considering an AIO but would be fine with a good fan that will fit. Anything is going to be than what I'm working with at this point.

With today's reports that the new AMD 5900X will be around 150 Watts, i.e. 50% more Watts than the AMD 3900X, do you think it points to definitely going with AIO rather than air cooling? Or do you think the air cooling can cope with a 150 Watt CPU? I'm aiming for the new 5900X and 3080.

That ultimately depends on a lot of things, not just the TDP. The quality of the thermal dissipation matters too, how consistently the thermal output is also matters. If it’s bursty in how it is attaining the higher clocks, then Liquid cooling does give you an advantage here, since water has a higher specific heat and is slower to react to burst loads and slower to hit equilibrium. I don’t think 150W TDP is out of air cooling territory, it does rule out the smaller coolers for sure. Noctua D15 is above a 240 AIO so I don’t think there’s anything an AIO can do that a bigger air cooler can’t (well, leak) Certainly 10900K in PL2 is well over that 150W. In an SFF case, especially where a D15 won’t fit, you are best off with a 240 AIO. In the NR200 and NCase M1 you have the advantage of being GPU agnostic. The exhaust direction of GPUs have little effect on an intaking radiator.
