Just wanted to share an update on the Cooler Master SFX Gold PSUs. I've been corresponding with Cooler Master's power division on some intermittent fan/fanless mode behavior I observed while testing the V850 SFX, and just wanted to share an analysis as well as what Cooler Master is doing about it.
I'm leaving the CM support site linked down below for your convenience if you would like to reach out: account.cooler...

@@Clarity520 if you have a quiet PC in a quiet room, it can get pretty “loud”. (using Noctuas etc.) However, I dare say it is more of annoyance rather than loud I have 2x Lian Li SL120 and 2x Noctua A12x15s in my custom loop. At light loads/idle, this ramp up when crossing the 15% threshold is easily the loudest in the entire system

Hi, I ordered this PSU (850v sfx) yesterday in France (retailer name: LDLC). Your video is very interesting. I checked on the product description and I was happy to see: - "With the V850 SFX, above 15% load, the power supply unit is perfectly silent. A button allows you to change this behavior to a normal mode that will increase the heat dissipation." The new unit should have a button. I should receive my unit the next week: 14-15th of january. I'll tell you if it has a button to switch between each mode. Love your videos, Birilio

SFF PSUs might get more love in the coming years, Lian-Li's O11D mini uses a SFF PSU rather than an ATX one and it does wonders for the overall size and layout of the case. I wonder if it'll become a more common trend to downsize the PSU rather than have that very bulky PSU compartment as is seen in so many cases.

Coolermaster should be transparent about how consumers can identify the latest revision, whether it's through the box design or serial number . If we buy a unit in a retail store at least we have the ability to tell, and that would be very helpful. Better to get it right at the time of purchase, than to hope for the best, get a rude shock, and go through the hassle of emailing CM support and yadayada Judging by the number of negative comments on the way this PSU fan behaves, i think most people are NOT okay with it

Thanks for the review. I have a sandwich case and my GPU (3080) constantly pushing hot air to the PSU at least some of it. I had no problem at all with Corsair sf600. My PC is almost whisper silent with Corsair although the same hot air gets to the PSU. After buying Cooler Master v850 I hear 1) much more noise than Corsair even at a nornal usage 2) after starting a game - it gets really loud. I don't hear that much spikes just the level of noise is much higher. While gaming I hear only Cooler Master PSU running - and 0 noise from GPU fans and radiator fans... Could that be because Cooler Master PSU gets hot quicker or that is some kind of protection? Though if they make ITX PSU they should be aware that most of the ITX cases are sandwich type. And I didn't get it - with the new batch will it be less noisy? Or it's just the spikes that they are going to solve? Why not to make just a normal curve with a few degrees like Corsair.

Since I only game and it's at 1440p, my CPU stays in lock step with what the GPU temp is, to the degree. 70C under load. It was much worse at 1080p, 85C sustained. My n=1 experience with toddlers and tech stuff is that my son is strangely always right. 😂 I don’t know that the SF600 is much better than the 650 in noise (at load they’re about the same noise level, maybe the SF600 is a tad lower) but if your setup is one that might result in the fanless behavior triggering back and forth then I think the revised version will be better. It’s possible you’d get the new version, but I was told right now inventory is a mix. Otherwise I think the other features of the V650 give it a small edge over the SF series. I don’t have a big concern with the fan on the V650, the 850 is where I noticed it.

Just received the 850W SFX psu today and am now running it in my Lian-Li system. And yes, the fan ramps up and down with simple browsing and it's quite annoying to say the least. I don't want to return it because I've waited 1.5 months for this unit and there aren't so much high powered SFX psu's on the market anyway. Isn't there a fix for this? I'm thinking of simply put a resistor in the + cable to decrease the voltage to the fan so its 12v full speed will be something like 7v medium speed, but I don't know if the psu will overheat. Or maybe disconnect the fan from the main board and regulate it yourself with a fan controller?!

Lol I just ranted about it on Reddit a few days ago here’s my original comment: was just going to complain about it. its a semi-fanless design and the fan only kicks in at 15%load. it could get quite loud and the worse thing is my idle load is probably at something like 10%. because whenever i do something with my computer (literally just opening another tab on chrome) the fan engages, and turn right back off and its pretty annoying. wish the fan would be controlled by psu temps instead.
@MachinesMore
@MachinesMore 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, that's indeed the behavior. If you had the right hardware that put it right at the cusp of 15% then you would see the fan act up like that. I think I mentioned this but because I had an OC'd 3700X on the V650 test system, it was basically always on at a low level and never built up enough heat to cause the fan spike. The SFX unit that I have in my daily driver has been the 650W EVGA- and this fan never comes on, I'm talking up to 450W of draw and it still never kicks on. But when it does (and it finally did when I threw the 3080 in there to test it out), oh man, run for the hills loud. So I think some balance is good, I'm hopeful that just having the fan run very slowly at low draws will resolve the issue.

I went through so many obstacles trying to get the SF PSU and I really wanted the 1st option (SilverStone SFX 1000W) the 2nd option (CoolerMaster SFX V850W) or the 3rd option would be Corsair SF750W ... Now I kept reading bad reviews on the 1st and 2nd PSU, I was really skeptical, but I needed the SF PSU for my Lian-Li Mini... So, desperately trying to get either one, I wound purchasing 2 SF PSU around the same time! The (CoolerMaster SFX V850W) and the (Corsair SF750W)... CoolerMaster SFX V850 only comes with actually 2 (PCI-E 6+2 cables) and each one with an extra 6+2 attached which I don't like... I don't know if it were my (PCI-E Type 3 cables) but the CoolerMaster SFX V850W PSU wouldn't power up my system? - In the end, I wound up using the Corsair SF750W because again, I had 3 separate individual sleeved PCI-E Type 3 cables for each slot which I prefer to connect my 3080 and so far I have no issues.

I can see that being an issue too- the way Ryzen activates/sleeps cores causes power spikes which will inevitably trigger the fanless/fan issue. I would think that CM disabling the fanless feature will help create a more gentle transition.

Hello Richard. Either is fine. The later videos have the U12A because I tested differences between vented and glass panels and the tower style is the only one that works best for both panels. If you are at all considering to use the glass panel I would go U12A, otherwise you can’t go wrong with either, both U12A in rear intake and C14S allow the GPU to perform similarly- more or less they don’t impede it.

*Long comment but I hope this helps as a fellow user of the NR200P with a 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio* If you want the best performance for the GPU, mount it horizontally, and fit 2 fans at the bottom as intake, preferably 15mm height fans to have some clearance with the GPU. It will lower GPU temps by approx 2 degrees from what I know and increase CPU temps by a bit, but I dont think that will be the case if you use the CPU cooler with rear intake. You can use some software to configure the bottom fans to spin according to GPU usage and temps for best GPU cooling. I used to have a Noctua U12A on a B460-i Strix and it doesn't fit with the glass panel, only the mesh panel. Not sure with the U12S tho, can't seem to find reliable answers on the internet. No doubt the best cooling you can have for your CPU if you use the U12A for this case, assuming you are not considering AIOs. Some are saying a Scythe tower cooler outperforms the U12A but I can't remember the model atm. I can search for the info if you wish to know. You can try the Hyper 212 Black Edition and perform a small hack for it to fit with the glass panel, video linked below, my setup atm as well. However, take note that the Hyper 212 Black Edition may have RAM clearance issues as the cooler is not offset in design (like how the Noctua U12A is, the heatpipes are shifted to the left), no issues if you configure as rear intake, but push pull config you would need a 15mm fan at the right side (the side of the cooler facing the RAMs). kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGq4o3SOgbuSiNU

@@Lwhchris Even lower temperatures results are achieved by undervolting+OC and deshrouding the GPU, placing 2*14cm noctua ippc 2000rpm fans at the bottom, place the 2 fans as close against the GPU's heatsink as possible to increase air pressure, and for the CPU use the Noctua C14S with open mesh panel and top 1* slim fan and 1*25mm fan, or Scyte Fuma 2 with tempered glass panel and top 2*25mm 12cm fans like the Noctua 12cm ippc 3000 fans (configured with fan curves, 25-30% under 60°C, 40% on 65°C and 80-100% on 70-75°C). Deshrouding has a chance making you lose your warranty though, especially if you need to remove the heatsink to do it (Gigabyte doesn't add warranty stickers, but thermal paste might get air bubbles and might need reapply (gelid gc-extreme would be great), that however definitely leaves evidence, thermal pads are all kinda loose or by dust, hair or fingerprints, depends on how throughly and the amount of asshole the RMA guys are), so be careful. The 3060 TI Gaming X Trio luckily does not require removing the heatsink, you unscrew all the screws that can be found on top of the heatsink, removing the fans and the shroud, note you might leave evidence here, since the top of the screws may not look pristine. You then unplug the mini 4 pin fan cables and RGB ribbon (be Very careful, this cable is Super fragile, entirely held on the shroud by the solder point, super easy to rip off). If you get a mini/gpu 4 pin fan > normal 4 pin fan cable, you can connect your own PWM fans directly to the GPU, no need for Argus Monitor, be sure to not exceed 0.8Ampere per fan port. Nice thing too is this will slightly decrease the length of the card, since end of the shroud were the heatsink ends adds around 8mm. With the increasingly high costs of mITX motherboards and SFX PSU's, instead i got myself a used sff case which looks almost as small as the NR200 for me (i measured about 28cm*37cm*22cm), but fits a mATX motherboard like the Asrock B550 Pro4, ATX PSU's, 190mm CPU heatsink and can do 347mm long GPU's. I did have to do a little modding and cleaning here and there, but it has great cooling. It looks nice, but the NR200 looks nicer and might be easier to work with, but it was a little annoying only being able to use expensive small components (can't find SFX 750-850 Watt for over 3 months now...) or lose additional fans or stuff.

I definitely don't like the semi-fanless feature on mine. I prefer the fan to be on or at least automatically switch on when the temps reach a certain level at the very least. Instead, if I let my PC idle for long periods of time, it will just heat up and reboot rather than switching the fan on. Its completely fine at gaming loads with a 5950x and 6900xt since the fan is running at load, but at idle, the power draw is not enough to trigger the fan to run.
@MachinesMore
@MachinesMore 3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it- it needs to idle for some time to build up enough heat to make it spazz out. I'm actually a bit surprised that a 5950X and 6900XT wouldn't cause the fan to run regularly, since the threshold should in theory be crossed with your whole system, even at idle loads, may just be at the cusp.
@sendnoodles2486
@sendnoodles2486 3 жыл бұрын
@@MachinesMore the 6900xt has some low frequency stepping states at 0-50mhz for idle and I've undervolted my 5950x via precision boost curve optimiser. According to my UPS my system pulls 80w at idle, which would be around 64-72w actual power running the system at idle with the AC to DC conversion loss. The fan should be kicking in at around 130w power consumption, but it doesn't. I've tried using CPU-Z to generate an all core load on the CPU, which should be around 140w at my settings from just the CPU alone but that doesn't get the fan spinning either so something is bugged there. I've found that it takes CPU and GPU load to get the fan spinning. Can't wait to swap it to a revision 2. I hate not being able to turn off semi fanless modes.

I'm worried about this video, because Cooler Master is not responding to RMA requests on this or acknowledging it, at least consistently. I for one have two of these and they are not responding to my RMAs. The info here is partially misleading as the issue is not at all limited to "lower power systems". I personally have an NCase M1 with a 5950x and a Asus TUF OC 3090 and the fans pulse/spin up about once every 3-10 seconds in medium to light workloads. The issue is caused by workload, not the spec of your parts since most parts run in low power at idle all the same, whether you have a Ryzen 5600x or a 5950x for example

I’ve heard we would have to switch the pins around to get the fan working. I’ve tried to attempt this but unfortunately the sf450 has a 2 pin dc header and I would need 3 or 4 fan converters which is not worth it. The 4 pin that the sf600 and sf750 have would only need 1 splitter and a changing of pins on the header to match up.

Yes, but, my observation with a higher powered CPU is that it came on earlier anyway so it didn’t build up as much idle heat, so there wasn’t noticeable spikes.
