Those pre STC Cummins always smoke horribly at idle. On trucks with stacks you can often see fuel pouring out the exhaust clamps if you let them idle too long.

I don’t know if you knew this ,one of the improvements made to the D9H from the G was a pinned equalizer bar,this is good because it pins the ends of the bar instead of just resting on it like the G restraining any lateral movement of the Track frames,which helps keep final drives gears and bearings aligned .

Greetings from South Africa Jeff. Province of Kwa Zulu Natal ,Capital city of Pietermaritzburg. Your videos bring back good memories. I'm a CAT trained artisan but as you well know there are plenty of other makes of equipment in construction. I've done a few years of marine work 353, 379,398. We had Oshkosh trucks here E and F series mainly. As an apprentice I cut my teeth on 977's and D9G. What they now call "vintage" machines . Keep up with the great vids.

And... we have a tradition of cab-over prime movers in Australia... goes back to the old days of Fodens, Commers and Internationals. The KW 200 cab-over is a staple of the Oz highway - especially for line haul. It just looks right at home on a two lane ozzie highways.
@4554dy
@4554dy 6 жыл бұрын
Also has much to do with the length limits in Australia which explains the short wheel base specs on COEs and especially conventional cabs. East coast is very tough on length limits. You'll never see a car hauler with any loaded vehicle sitting /hanging past the end of a trailer.

You can deal with the shavings in the filter magnet by 1) Get a high power magnet. 2) Put it in a plastic bag 3) Use it to draw off the metal shavings. 4 ) Turn the bag inside out and throw the bag way with the metal shavings inside!

Hi Jeff, Rod from Australia. Have really enjoyed your videos , particularly the ones to do with the switchblade on the truck. Your pressure testing on the road is something I have never seen. Buying the H would be good for us subscribers as we would learn a lot from the extensive overhauling that wil be needed, a path that I have already been down. D9 G and H are iconic machines and to run them successfully I think you need to understand the workings of them well.

I would probably start really low on price for that D9. You can always go up on price but not down. and like you said there's going to be a lot of parts and labor! even with your own shop you still have to figure that your labor is worth as much as any other shop! honestly I would start out at scrap price and go from there. you might end up like me, buy a dozer with only 500 hours on a engine overhaul then rebuild the transmission, rebuild the undercarriage, fix everything else and just as everything is all new and fixed the engine throws a rod out the side of the block making a hole the size of your head!

I know it's not a good comparison, but I have a no longer made, 2008 Montana compact tractor 28 HP and it has Titan tires on it (OEM). They wear like iron and I don't park it out in the sun at all and they seem to be fine. No side cracking at all and the tread is almost brand new. Hope that helps about the tire brand. They are probably all the same in quality no matter what the size. I found out long time ago junk is junk. Like your channel.

@smoki2515

A company named Montana back in late 2009 stopped making compact farm tractors. Another company called LS Tractor bought them out. They still make compact tractors today and full size tractors in Arkansas. My tractor a 2006 Montana 2740 model 4 wheel drive with 16 forward gears and 8 in reverse,and came with a front end loader, live hydraulics in the rear and can be used as a compact farm tractor. We have 3 horses on acreage and use it all the time for various tasks. It came from the factory with Titan tires on the front and rear. They are agriculture type tires but I think made by the same company you were referring in your video. The Titan's my tractor on it have been very good even in mud. Very good quality.

on the tool box pair.. i might put a pair of hinges where your hand is @28:05 so you could have them side by side or perhaps back to back.. by just unlatching something low up front. see if that might work out by rotating them and see if that would come in handy when between pieces of equipment. the D9H would be one heck of a long term fairly expensive project. but you are totally right about needing a spare. rain.. are you aware that intense storms can be caused by the ash particles from fires hundreds or a thousands of miles up wind.. moisture needs particles of just the right size to create rain drops.. if you look at the tornado outbreaks farther east.. you will note that there were major fires on the west coast and Canada.. even the super fine volcanic ash can create clouds and rain when it runs into a cold front laden with moisture.. as for the flooding in your garage and in your house.. well.. it would be handy if you knew anybody with earth movers.. since you can't easily raise the house or garage.. you can lower and put some grade in the areas around them preventing rain and light flooding to become an issue.. my great grandfather built a house in New Orleans.. he built it on a pile of dirt from one of the construction sites the company was digging back in the early 1900s.

The reason starters fail like that. The nose cone bushing fails and the shaft goes crazy in the oversize hole then it breaks the nose off of itself...... The first sign of trouble (inspection) will prevent total Destruction like that. Just a FYI .....

Jeff - I'd love to get my name up on the subscriber board. I don't know much about shopping for used D9's but you sure make it sound like that one will be a lot of work. Is it worth it to you to put in all the wrench time to have a good dozer? Why not take the $50k and look for one in better shape? Maybe that vintage is hard to find...?
