I love the little details - the bilingual stop signs, the subdivision signs an the crossbucks. They all add to the feeling of being there.

Thanks! My good friend Chris helped with photos of real ones in Dartmouth and Google Streetview helped with other elements. I think it’s about picking which elements tell the story and including them without making the whole thing overcrowded and toy like.

Like the hand-drawn details on the building flats to be constructed; we'll put some happy little windows here, and a door here...

Just like an old episode of Paddington Bear! Buildings are slowly being fleshed out, I finished the basics of the most complicated shape one this weekend.

I will look at doing some… I think there are some of Kinross and Paxton Road in a similar style without dialogue.

I have a copy of your book and find it a bit like “Zen in the art of building a model railway“. IE model railways reduced to its pure essence. I also have a very thumbed book called Model Railroading with John Allen that I have owned for decades and can still remember Johns magazine articles from the 1950s.

Thank you, I feel very humbled to be in such company. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the new book out in the autumn

Thank you, as a ‘proof of concept’ it works. I need to refine some of the angles to remove foreground ‘tells’ that we’re on a layout… oh and finish the structures! They are enjoyable to put together so I’m pleased people also enjoy watching them.

Love the structues, scratch built or Pikestuff? The Alco S2 (?) is Atlas presumably. A fiddle stick needed maybe.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Жыл бұрын
All the structures are scratchbuilt based upon those on the real Beaverbrook in Moncton, New Brunswick. the loco is a Montreal Locomotive Works S13, a resin kit running on a much modified Bachmann mechanism. It’s built along the wall of my workshop and runs from wall to wall. No fiddlestick required.

Nice S13. Point 1 models resin kit?
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Жыл бұрын
No, it’s a resin kit from Kaslo on a much modified Bachmann S4 chassis with Tsunami2 decoder.

I gather this is a shelf layout. Have you posted a track plan? Looks very realistic without all the unnecessary clutter one sees so often modeled. Clutter is not detail.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways5 ай бұрын
It is just the two turnouts. If you look in the channel I think there is one called Heart Felt Layout Tour which also talks about this layout. Viewed at eye level and a work in progress, but you’re right, clutter isn’t detail.
@What_If_We_Tried5 ай бұрын
James, what are the dimensions of this layout? I am in the planning stages of my first layout, but I think I need to build a much smaller one first, e.g., a shadow box diorama of sorts, or just a tiny shelf < 6 ft / 1.83 m. Thank-you...
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways5 ай бұрын
This is just over 8ft long, not much deeper than a 1ft over most of its length.
