Today's adventure took us to Coos Bay, where the rail meets the sail! (June 1-5, 2022)
American settlement of Coos Bay followed a shipwreck. When word of the area's bounty spread; mining, logging, hunting and fishing exploded. Today Coos Bay is still famous for logging, as well as its coastal scenery.
My family and I are typically visiting and learning about the history and geography of Colorado, but this time we went to Coastal Oregon! Already a completely different world than we're used to, Coos Bay offered lots to do and see as visitors, and we wanted to share the experience!

We moved to Coos Bay in 1980, due to my husband's job change. I worked at the Hospital, as an RN. We moved, again, in 1982, to Topeka, KS, due to my husband's job change, again. My son, and his family, still live in Coos Bay, and I've been back there, for a visit, a few times.

I grew up in Coos Bay. Your report is excellent. It is a unique and beautiful area. There are plusses and minuses of course like anywhere but I think the plusses outweigh the negatives. When I lived there, there was also a lot of creative stuff, music festivals, art, etc. which was really nice. It is kind of small town and it rains a ton though and it can feel a little bit closed in if you live there, I guess depending on your situation. I'm glad I grew up there and sure would like to go back more frequently than I've been able to in my adult life. So I esp. appreciate your video and getting to see my hometown again. The wildness of the beaches, the forests, the dunes, some of the most beautiful places on earth. Magical.

As a local, I appreciate the time and effort you took to highlight our little town. It has an interesting history and a bright future but we are not without our trouble now. Visiting Bandon is always fun, it's our favorite getaway close to home! And shore acres is so nice in the spring. The rose garden smells amazing. Also in the winter the entire park is decorated in Christmas lights and it's our favorite local tradition. Thanks again for showing people our small haven on the coast.

Just moved from coos bay across country I’d recommend no one to live there your right it’s unsafe the homeless and theft is out of control and there are very to few resources for these people that are struggling. The cops and people are pretty nasty. For a vacation it’s great but if you live there it’s just as bad as Redding cali were im from. Just in a smaller area. A couple months ago there’s been 2 killings which is unheard apparently?! But in the year I lived there I saw more tweaks with knifes than I’d like to admit. Everyone for the most part is for themselves just a depressing rock that people get stuck in. Very sad, if I were to ever have kids, coos bay would be out of the picture. I do miss the ocean.

I realize right wingers love to blame everything from bad weather to stubbing your toe on democrats, but Coos Bay is represented by 2 republicans and 1 democrat and the town is actually run by republicans. Currently live in Humboldt County California, and have visited Coos Bay many times. It's a great place to storm watch during winter, and the surrounding towns are lovely (Tony's crab shack in Bandon makes killer clam chowder & lobster rolls!!). Shore Acres is beautiful...and is decorated with lights during the Christmas holiday season (grab a shuttle from The Mill Casino, as parking at shore acres can be difficult during the holidays).

Next time, ask about and take a pleasant walk at Mingus park. Once in a while and during Christmas, there is an antique (origan, instrument)at an old theatre where they play concerts. In North Bend they hold an Old Oprey at a old theatre, both events are lots of fun. The gardens at Cape Arago have three seasons to visit different flower displays, dahlias, roses, and camellias with azaleas. The same gardens have a Christmas light display there worth a trip.

My grandfather was stationed there for training in 1917 before shipping out to Germany in the infantry.
