Once another vehicle is detected as parked, the waymo tries to navigate around. The best thing you could do is to get 4 traffic cones and box it in.

What you’re seeing is something that isn’t done being made. The first cars that were made were incredibly unreliable and totally dangerous. They got better over time. You shouldn’t expect a new thing to be as good as an existing thing. If in 2 years these are in the same situation and unable to handle it better, that’s a sign that this specific company isn’t addressing issues quickly enough. It says nothing about the feasibility of automated cars though.

@@leomux2004 I guess. I’ve lived and worked in SF. These cars are everywhere. They’re not getting into a bunch of accidents. You can look at each mile driven by these and compare to human driven cars. They do pretty ok. What they have is WAY better than what Tesla has. Actually, Mercedes, GM, and Honda also have versions of self driving that are also better than what Tesla has.

Waymo Rider Support & Emergency Response: My understanding is that Waymo riders can access support even from outside the vehicle. Additionally, Waymo offers 24/7 support specifically for emergency responders. Suggestions for Police Interaction: For future situations, perhaps a Waymo representative could train officers on appropriate protocols for interacting with Waymo vehicles. This could include: Knowing how to contact Waymo support directly (if needed). Understanding how to communicate with the vehicle occupants (if safe). Determining if rerouting the Waymo vehicle is necessary and how to facilitate that safely. Positive Note: Hopefully, the officer who deployed the flares can benefit from such training in the future.

Officer said that SF Fire had just charged (aka turned on) one of the main water hoses so it couldn't be moved at that point. (He says it really fast so it's hard to catch it) but once a firehose has water running through it it's a major pain to move lol

Cop gives car orders would be more technically accurate. My or your perception is just that. Fire Department and Police Departments are paramilitary and follow a command structure. Training is needed for departments to learn how they can communicate with AI vehicles if NEED TO. AI vehicles also need to be able to comprehend in some way shape or form what these departments are trying to tell the vehicle what to do.

Probably Waymo would just give permission for cops and firefighters to just control self driving vehicles manualy. They did a good job on teaching firefighters how to extiguish self driving vehicle fire, as its different from communities vehicle. Also construction sites and road maintanance is beign put in self driving navigation. Self drivingnis cars are also aware of sirens of emergency vehicles. This one is just another problem to solve. Maybe just to put an extra human operator who would login to car and solve situation quickly. Now it takes a while when car is stuck in 0.00001% probability situation until human solves situation. I would argue that after those 46 seconds of the video human operator solved situation, but video was cut out to give impression that self driving cars are crap
