Check out the video called "speed kills your pocketbook" all the engineering behind roads and limits are explained. The guy even found studies from engineers where they recommended higher limits, but the provinces never listened and used lower limits. So now the natural speed of traffic is above the "limit" and theyll set up traps because of "reckless" drivers and excess speed. People think motorcycles are reckless but honestly, most riders are so aware of whats going on, not texting, not messing with a radio or screen etc. They know whats in yhe lanes around them and can easily navigate.

A bit of an over-simplification going on here. Didn't mention terrain (e.g. hills), vehicle size and capabilities (e.g. wider, heavier vehicles), location (only mentioned surface streets once but people speed in residential areas too), driver capabilities (e.g. older people have slower reaction times and reduced mobility), driver intentions (e.g. people in no hurry and just driving the speed limit), driver experience, and distracted driving.

Speed limits are a money source for police departments and provide a reason to pull you over if you look suspicious.

The truth is the 85th-Percentile rule only works if the requisite engineering study is done *before* the signs are installed. The vast majority of speed limits in America are set by local municipalities who ignore this requirement (either because they can't afford it, or just don't want to comply), which means most speed limit signs are installed in violation of federal and state law (the MUTCD).

I remember in middle school I accidentally pulled a stop sign out of the ground because the concrete was cracked and separated. Problem was when I tried to put it back it wouldn't go so it stayed all crooked for years. I left my mark on Corona California for a while I guess hahahahaha.

Variable speed limits. During the more traffic heavy parts of the day the speed limit is reduced, and when the highway is more empty the speed limit increases. Solar panels, a bit of hardware to keep track of average traffic during a set time as well as a detection system to detect a surge in traffic. Wouldn't be difficult to implement and I expect it would be effective.

Asphalt roads are significantly easier to repair than concrete. I am very much a fan of concrete. But asphalt is easier to fix when problems occur.

I drive a German 6 speed manual in a quaint mountain town. People drive my street like it is the autobahn when a higher 2nd or very low 3rd gear is all that is warranted, same for local park… come on people! Same time in and way out of town I will make some aggressive high speed lanes changes, tight turns and higher RPM shifts never tailgating when distracted drivers are having trouble with well banked turns and pretty decent pavement…. But man give some city drivers a 2 lane passing lane in these mountain roads and all of a sudden these inner city folks have their race car driver persona come out, every time, just have to accept it as the human condition and keep your cool… :)

The states need to take data and consider based on that data what the fastest safe speed is on certain roads, and then increase what needs to be increased. I live in idaho and there are many straight roads here where most of us are going over the speed limit.😊

You are missing the effect of BEV vehicles regarding pollution, higher speed has no effect on the pollution caused by my Tesla Model Y fueled by sunshine from my solar panels. In addition, FSD will have the biggest effect on the major issue regarding bad driving, people not paying attention due to smart phones.

yes, speed limits work perfectly. you just don't know that they're intended purpose is to make Police departments as much money as possible. the real question should be: does punishment for a crime have any effect on stopping anyone from committing the crime?

3:30 Sorry, German here, actually most of the Autobahn is paved with Asphalt... Only parts with a high frequency of traffic or where the underground is not as stable concrete is used. In my internship in an big Asphalt machine manufacturer i learnt that the thickness of material matters, while here we have thicker paved roads in the us they will redo the Roadway more often with a smaller amount of material. Asphalt is obviously used because it is much more quiet than concrete, tough concrete has therefore some other advantages :)

Speed limits are for the attorneys. It's only used by the Government as a liability factor..if you go too fast and lose control you can't sue the City, State, or Feds...that's all..they never cared about your safety. That's lie..

I think road design also plays a major factor into speed limits. A speed limit of 40kmh on a narrow road with tight turns and cars parked on it might be too high, while a speed limit of 70kmh on a straight road with 6 wide lanes is too low.
