COP15, the UN biodiversity summit has opened in Canada.
More than 10,000 people, including scientists, activists and government officials are meeting in a bid to preserve sensitive ecosystems across the globe.
Representatives from nearly 200 countries are set to meet, in the hopes of developing a plan to restore nature by the end of the decade.
And, with COP15 seen as a chance to do for biodiversity what the Paris agreement has done for the fight against climate change, the stakes are high.

Oh but they plant a tree so that makes it alright. Completely makes up for all the travel, heating their pools and massive houses. They will eat gold covered steaks at salt bar and us poor people can eat bugs

I agree in principle Katherine. However, would these same leaders be criticised for not attending, for attending only online (less media coverage) or because they've taken two weeks to get there?

@@andyroid7339 yes, you're correct, the public would complain; therefore the problem is not only global leaders (and the elite), it's "civilized" society.

@@kimbarrett6842 I completely agree Kim. I see this travel as a 'necessary evil'. Currently air travel makes up 2% of GHG emissions (though this will increase as other sources are reduced). Given that I see many people sat in their ICE cars, engines idling and Ryan air flights for £12 as well as football fans flying miles to watch grown men play a kids' game (when they could watch it on TV) "civilised society" needs to address these sources more or as equally as urgently. Think of the outcry! (For the sake of our planet - Bring it on!)

You dont get to buy a new suit and take the family on an all expenses payed holiday on zoom. Honestly i dont trust a single mp who isnt working for minimum wage. that would show a true belief in a nation (including its people, they like to separate the two, they are one).

@@innocentnemesis3519 uy they got you too huh, coal mines are back on only without the unions? 🤦 They launched two nuclear power stations in wales in recent years, wales produces 2.5x what it uses already. We dont need them. And when it was protested they sent ships with 10,000tonnes of untested nuclear mud and dumped it off the welsh coast (with a police escort i might add). This really is an abusive marriage.

I've been spending my summers up there for just that reason. It is a magnificent country; bigger than the U.S. with 1/10th the population.

That is true but it is a struggle to keep mining corporations from disrupting nature and poisoning rivers, while logging is also tearing down at forests. We need to always fight corporations which only care about profit.

@@ronkirk5099 As a Canadian, we have access to so much unspoiled nature. When I go hiking in various provincial parks, I'm often the only one there. In the US most national parks are very crowded, especially in summer. In Canada, even in high season, most national parks have trails that are empty (except Banff, which is often crowded).

The UK should stop going to these meetings and instead use the money to actually protect biodiversity. The UK needs to increase its forest cover. The UK likes to talk and talk and talk, and it ends there. No action.

For decades property developers have filled in wetlands and low lying areas and built homes, strip malls and shopping centers on them. Wetlands are natures over flow, flood storage and ground water recharge ares. Wetlands need to be protected, expanded and appreciated for the flood control and water storage that they provide.

Okay, I don’t wanna be that guy, but I just have to ask about the name. Why on earth is this called ‘COP15’ when we’ve literally JUST HAD COP’27’. am I missing something? I thought the numbers were supposed to ascend, not decent and in random groups!? I can see that these two different summits were for climate change and the other for biodiversity, but if they don’t change the names a little bit, it is going to make it very confusing. That’s nooot a good idea right now. Or better yet, as they said in the report, actually damn well bring all of these different summits together rather than having individual ones.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but here is what I understand. COP stands for "Conference of the Parties", which is the big meetup for the delegations of countries that are participants of a UN convention. Like you alluded to, there are different conventions for different issues (Climate Change, Biodiversity, Mercury Pollution, Ozone, etc.), and and even though they are all separate events, their COPs are all called COPs (which is confusing like you said). The COPs happen at regular intervals after the year that a convention comes into force, and they are numbered consecutively. This one is "COP15" because it is the 15th COP for the Convention on Biodiversity, and the other one is "COP27" because it is the 27th COP for the Convention on Climate Change. All this to say that the COPs for different conventions are numbered separately. I hope that clarifies something, but I have to agree that maybe they should have a less confusing naming system.

You might have noticed how cold it is. You probably haven't noticed the Greenland ice sheet is at a 43 year high. America is recording up to 206% higher snowfall than usual. By Friday, 47 states willl be buried in the stuff. Also, that naughty Sun is at a very low ebb. Put these things together, and we are in for interesting times.

“Protecting” and “restoring”, but beyond obvious birds and mammals, there is often zero knowledge about many species, and vast numbers of species undescribed and unstudied. We need huge investment in characterising the many MANY as yet overlooked species.
