I had a 2005 with a 5-speed manual transmission. Only drove it in fair weather and never in Ohio winters or on salted roads. Put 20k miles on it in ten years. TIP: when you replace the battery also replace the alternator at the same time. I replaced a battery and in 500 miles the alternator fried. Replaced the alternator and fried the battery 500 miles later. Took it to a specialty wiring shop. They said a quirk in the electronics caused this to happen to loads of PT Cruisers ( in their experience). Replaced both and all was well thereafter. Otherwise the car was flawless for ten years. PS yes, the top doesn’t go down much farther. They sold a cover that makes it look less awkward. What do you expect from a new car that cost $15,500 brand new? It was a basic, fun car and cheap!

The Volt Meter is a useful tool if used correctly. What it can't tell you is whether a circuit can carry current. The best way to test fuses or junctions is to attach a filament Test Light to ground (requires current) and see that it lights brightly. If you're in doubt a volt meter across the test light should still show battery voltage, and while you're at it shove it up the ass of the TCM. Similarly a test light to battery positive can check for a good ground.

4:30 Those screw holes are for the light and program button module that comes with the KARR alarm system. They would have a light that would blink when the alarm was active and a button hidden under a detachable electronic key. If the key was removed you could program the alarm parameters with sequences of button presses. The original dealer probably had one installed before it was sold. The KARR alarm systems usually go bad and stop working after a while, best to remove them and repair the ignition wire...

- Looks like a cold solder joint on that wire. You need to cut it anyway to slide the heat shrink over the wire - make sure you have bright shiny copper, make a good solid mechanical connection, make sure you heat up that connection enough so the solder flows, let it cool, slide the heat shrink over the splice, heat gun, done! - troubleshooting is NEVER boring!

Make SURE the alternator is working properly. Low voltage will cause erratic shifting. When I was a Shriner, some of the older guys sold the VW dune buggies and bought those PT convertibles (I kept my Manix-Meyer Buggy). I seem to remember many issues due to voltage drops. More than likely you are on the right path with the module but a large voltage spike from a bad alternator could have been what took out the computer. Every time I buy a Mopar, I change the alternator. It always starts to shift better, a/c blows colder and engine runs smoother / cooler (timing and sensors I guess).

Seeing a PT Cruiser trashed like this, makes me so goshdarn happy! You'll never own one, nor miss it (unless it's just me, if I see any of you saying goodbye or missing it, you're in trouble!) Only I can miss it, own one, drive one without a dent and love it! The rest of you have to do the exact opposite, no excuses nor exceptions!

I used to write for the Allpar site - this is 100% an electrical issue. That trans was as reliable as it ever got by 06. My 04 Pacifica did similar things - the boxes around the shift indicators means the PCM can't read the trans range sensor. May not throw the code if it's that intermittent. In my case it was the PCM but given the wiring disaster it could easily be the TIPM too. Gotta love Daimler era electronics.

I’d put a known good battery in it and check the charging system before I’d Order any parts for it. ( fire the parts cannon) I’d also check the ignition harness to see if whatever aftermarket crap they had installed was properly removed and not causing a short. Something caused that ignition fuse to blow.

I have a 14 Jeep Patriot. My driver side headlight blew out on me last year and I did what normal people would do and go to advanced auto to get a pair of new headlight. Then apparently it blew my TPIM. Called my local Jeep dealership and they wanted more than 1000$ to get it replaced. I don’t recommend what I did but I just wired my headlight to the passenger. it works alright. Waiting for my Jeep to do the same thing in the video and I’ll run away from Chrysler. This is very common problem. I’m lucky it’s only my headlight.

TK is right. When a battery goes totally flat and dead without being charged, it shorts internally and the charging system can get damaged.

I own a 2006 PT Cruiser Touring model convertible. I think this video is great, I like it! Very entertaining and informative! I do have to say that my PT Cruiser’s convertible top goes down further so I’m wondering if there might be an issue with that as well in your PT?? I’m going to watch your next video now and see what you have come up with.👍🏼

Randy, just fyi, sometimes that generation would get water down on the main connection to the transmission on the tra ny. It would pool water then seep in. Might check that connection also for water / liquid. This was another common problem we found with Dodge / Chrysler from around the 99 to 05 year range.
