Back to back great episodes. Dev interview and copart discussion. Imo the best interviews are an hour with unknown investors and stock deep dives.

Labor costs are higher at repair shops too, which is another reason that more cars are being totaled out by insurance

Great episode! I'd be interested to hear your take on another risk, that pertains to electric vehicles: a manufacturer can disable key features of an EV when it's totalled, potentially rendering the vehicle unusable. For example, Tesla can disable supercharging, software updates and autopilot for a totalled vehicle, and my understanding is that this is done for safety reasons, as a totalled EV might have structural or electrical damage that could make it unsafe to operate or charge at high power levels. Drew Cohen of Speedwell Research called this out as a risk, but I'm not sure how to quantify it. If it happens at scale, it would seem to me to be a potentially big problem for Copart as EVs become increasingly mainstream. Would appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you for your question! Even if the vehicle is rendered unusable, there might still be an opportunity to recycle the battery (albeit Copart does not disclose this currently). I'd say that the fact that electric vehicles have less parts than ICE vehicles is more of a risk than them being rendered useless, although it's definitely something worth considering
