I was a sheriff's explorer in Florida. I worked a motorcycle accident where a guy was crashed near a railroad crossing. He went flying over the handlebars when he was hit from behind and shot forwards and sideways. Literally peeled his face off. We actually were able to go and peel half his face off a railway tie. Convinced me to wear a helmet. The guy lived but he needed extensive surgery for years.

In 2007 I was in Fort Lauderdale in my minivan, stopped at a light. Next to me was GSXR-1300 Hayabusa with custom paint on the tank that matched the riders helmet. I looked at my significant other and said "Watch what this guy does". Green light, he shot around the car in front of him and I'm guessing he hit around 125 mph....When the white Acura sedan turned in front of him. He hit the right front wheel of the Acura and there was an explosion of steam and we could see parts fly everywhere. We rolled up on the accident and pulled over; The Acura was destroyed, but the passengers, three older women, were unhurt. The whole front end was pushed about a foot sideways. The bike was destroyed, but the rider was face-down on the swale next to where I parked. I got out and reached down and tapped him on the back "Hey buddy, you OK?" While my other was on the phone to 911. That is when I heard someone else who had stopped tell her "Tell 911 that his right leg is ripped off". I looked up from his neck and noticed that his leg was indeed, torn off, at the hip. The entire leg. Right about then, the paramedics showed up and pushed me away and immediately put a cover over his body. I remember that the blood flowing out of the lost limb area had this strange red-purple look to it, very opaque, almost like latex paint... No, the helmet would NOT have stopped Nicolas P Louis from losing his life on July 15, 2007. But it might just save the life of anyone reading this!

I stopped riding years ago because I messed up royally and went over the handle bars, fortunately I was geared up (You don't gear up for the ride, you gear up for the fall) everywhere I touched down gear took the brunt of the slide, brand new pair of alphinestars riding boots... the metal buckle holding the scraps was scraped off, leather riding jacket? scratched up from sliding face down, gloves, scratched up from sliding on the ground, helmet, not a scratch on it amazingly enough, but I was wearing it. the only piece of gear I wasn't wearing were riding pants because I couldn't find any to fit my fat arse, but the uniform pants I was wearing, torn where they where over the boot. Do I believe in riding gear, I bet my life on it. Or I used to, now I stick with at least 4 wheels on the ground. I figured someone was trying to tell me something so I decided to listen and traded my bike in on a pickup truck.
@clifbradley3 жыл бұрын
@@Flies2FLL wow. That is gruesome. Good on you for stopping. We also have an abundance of idiots on motorcycles around here. Speeding, no helmet, or anything remotely protective on. Dodging in and out of cars. I have gotten to the point where I avoid them at all costs. We frequently have the 'watch for motorcycles' signs up everywhere, but motorcycles need to watch out for themselves too. I get that people want to ride, but you hear about so many deadly accidents. We call them Donor Cycles. That wasn't the only fatal wreck I worked with a motorcycle. But it was memorable. One time a guy ran his bike into the rear tire of an 18 wheeler. The bike disintegrated. The driver bounced off the tire and flew backwards onto the windshield of a car. He hit so hard he caused the tire to weaken around the hub and the whole tire exploded and almost killed the truck driver when he went to look. The guys helmet was trapped in between the second tire amd the trailer. Driver lived. He walked into the ambulance and left a few hours later. But another one we worked, the guy hit the bed of a pickup doing about 45. Dented the bed of the truck but killed the driver from a broken neck. He was hunched over trying to accelerate and a truck ran fast on a yellow and got in the path as he blew the red.

Randy, You should be careful about bad mouthing scooters. “Nobody wants a scooter”. I had a Honda Silverwing with 600 cc and an automatic transmission. It would blow the doors off your Hemi. Did just that to a Chrysler 300 Hemi that thought mine was a moped and revved his engine at me at a stoplight. He was so impressed, he followed me home to check it out. Also, later on, I “bagged” it, put on a Givi trunk and built removable racks for carrying my golf clubs. It was still extremely fast and smooth as butter. On top of that, it was more fun to ride (especially long distance) than my silver anniversary limited edition Honda Goldwing with all the bells and whistles. Putting a Bluetooth headset in the Helmet allowed me to communicate with my passenger (normally my wife), other riders and hands free talk on my phone. I also did listen to music from time to time with the set up that cut off the music for sirens etc. etc. All bikes are only what you make of them but I will say with nearly 60 years of riding experience it is not alway wise to judge a book by its cover.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
