*Well, in Europe (I live in the Netherlands) cars from VAG (VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda & Seat) are most common.* VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) made pretty reliable cars back in the beginning and still when VW just bought Audi and Skoda. Almost all the '80 en '90 cars are bulletproof. Around 2000 the quality went down. The golf and Jetta back then had bad interiors, but the engines where fine. Automatics broke down around 150k. Later when the golf V and VI came the engine problems started too. The horrible TSI, TFSI, and GTDI came too. And the early DSG automatics are notorious for breaking down. If you wanna guess on a VAG product, then buy a manual or a very new one with DSG. Never buy a New Beetle and the 5V 1.8, VR6 and 1.9TDI are the best engines from the past 20 years that VAG produced.

@@iliaslamari7315 I was given a '90 VDP with the 4L, black w/ AEE-code doeskin interior. People have asked me if I work on Jag's, but these are the 'change over' year. ATE-sourced ABS brakes. Hitachi & Bosch electrics, very little Lucas (and seemingly dependable). Getrag trans...completely a different animal than the '89-down versions for sure. Another fun thing is that there is a lot of interchange upgrades you can do from the X300 & X308 chassis; if the power train ever dies in mine, it will get an LS swapped in. But done in emulation of the Jag credo of "Space, grace & pace." Nothing dumber than a hacked in SB 350 with a carb, rusty headers, rat's nest of wiring. I call them "Hill Billy Hot Rods."
@ThePaulv125 жыл бұрын
They don't have weak transmissions at all. They are a GM Turbo 400s. The V12s don't wear out rings either and don't suffer high oil consumption. They are an incredibly long lived engine and the car falls apart around the motor. Yes to all the other thing you said about them though. How do I know all this? Must be because I'm a Jaguar mechanic. People talk so much crap about these cars - A LOT DESERVED I admit because they can be frustrating but those things you said about the engines and transmissions is incorrect. Almost but not quite 100% incorrect in fact. read on There was a 12.5:1 HE V12 at the beginning of the HE engines. Some of these suffered broken pistons due to a unforseen circumstances. What would happen?, lots of city driving would cause some carbon deposits which was OK in almost all countries except Germany. In Germany if you had carbon and then hit the autobahn at full throttle the motor would detonate and blow the ring lands out of the pistons. If you slowly built up speed it would burn off the carbon and all would be well. What Jaguar did was lower the comp to 11.1:1 on all HE engines and the motor would still rattle a bit but not cause any trouble. Those motors after many many miles still have perfect cylinder bores with the hone cross hatching still apparent. The crankshaft journals are so incredibly hard they hardly ever need grinding unless something has scoured them and even then it is almost always never deep enough to worry about - just the bearings replacing on the original journal - not too many motors like that around let me say. The nitriding process is exceptional as is the quality of the forged steel crankshaft. The pre HE V12 had bearings that weren't as good as later bearings. Those older V12s would rumble in the big ends when the bearing were worn out. The bloody crank journals would still be perfectly fine though. The bearings on those older V12s, the tri metal bearing surface would be completely warn off, and the base material would now be the bearing surface but still the crank journals would be OK. Very very hard. V12s have near perfect primary and secondary balance. They do suffer a little torsional vibration and it is not unknown for the crankshaft front balancer bolt to need tightening but usually pretty rare, though I used to see it from time to time. The tappets hardly ever need adjusting, they don't overheat as people say, though if you burst a hose and cook the motor the rings don't like that much, nor do the valve seat inserts. Before you slang off about Jags I humbly submit you stick to facts rather than hearsay of disgruntled ex owners because some people out there might know more than you and it could get embarrasing lol. Not that I've ever been embarrased by stupid things I've said (I'm being sarcastic - I've been caught out quite a few times)

GM voids the warranty on vehicles with salvage or reconstructed titles. Ran into this issue with a Chevy truck. If the vehicle passes a states enhanced inspection and is issued a reconstructed title, GM will honor certain safety recall items only. No warranty. As soon as the service dept. ran the VIN on the truck for approval it kicked back. Offered a discount on parts as a courtesy but the dealer would not touch it. Spear Chevrolet in Pa.. Also, weighing in on the Jetta. It's a 2.5 "S" trim car, pretty basic, but the 2.5 5 CYLINDER is a good engine. They're bulletproof reliable besides the vacuum pump seal ($250 at a shop, $40-$100 in parts), and the transmission valve body is known to go out on the earlier cars. For reference, I drive a 2009 Jetta 2.5 SE with 118k, had it almost 3 years since 92k and I love it. It's been trouble free besides the vacuum pump.

GM dealers here have that info on dealership computer systems and if it shows up as a previous total loss they will not honor factory warranty just as they will not honor factory warranty on salvage parts. Nationally as a member of Coalition for Collision Repair Excellence, ASE and others, this issue has been addressed by OEM reps also. Consider yourself lucky.

1.4.14 - Voided Warranties and Branded Titles The New Vehicle Limited Warranty is void on any vehicle with a title that has currently or previously been branded as salvage, scrap, junk, totaled, etc. Through state vehicle registration records, GM receives branded title listings periodically which in-turn are used to update the warranty system file. Only claims for repairs covered by the Emissions Warranty and/or recall will be processed. All GM Dealer's (excluding Saab) are to access the GMVIS system in order to qualify warranty coverage. Customers who wish to challenge a voided or branded title should be directed to GM Customer Assistance.
