Called back to change the oil and filter drier in the rebuit compressor after about eighty hours run time.
You can see how dirty the drier core looked compared to the new one.
It pays to use a torque wrench when doing the cover bolts back up to ensure there are no leaks at the gasket.

Hi Nick, I would pump down the system and then lock off the disconnect/isolator, shut all the service valves. Make a note of the oil level, i use an old refrigerant tank and pull a vacuum on it to suck the oil out with a thin tube, and hand pump the oil back in to level noted earlier. Core drier depends on model, some have more than one core, but there is instructions on the can, make sure the gasket is good/clean in the end plate and use a torque wrench on the bolts when refitting,

Copeland recomends that when you install a suction vibrator eliminator you install it paralell to the crank shaft. When it's installed perpindicular like this one is, it gets jammed together when the compressor vibrates up and down. It will be alright for a while but it will eventually fail. And you know Murphy's law, it will be Saturday night.
@gregoryclemen1870
@gregoryclemen1870 3 жыл бұрын
you are 100 % correct on that one, all vibration absorbers are to be installed parallel to the crankshaft of the compressor, also the oil level should be checked with the compressor in operation!!!

Its an old disposable refrigerant jug, i drilled a hole in it and brazed in a 1/4" fitting. I pull a vacuum with the vac pump on the original tap and have a tap and some small bore plastic tube on the new fitting to feed into the compressor sump. I could do a vid of the set up if you are interested :-)

If i remember correctly this one runs on 4gs mineral oil (or iso68 equivalent) because it has a mechanical oil pump on the compressor. I think your compressor is splash feed lubricated and would likely use a 3gs mineral or iso 32 grade poe oil depending on the type of refrigerant the system has in it. Best to check with Copeland, the wholesalers tech department or even a good compressor rebuilding company for advice. If poe, Emkarate RL-32-MAF is a specific oil for Copeland compressors.

Its not normal to have to change the oil in a new or replacement compressor, but this system has a history of dirty and contamination so thought it worth changing. The dirty is not normal either, its wear metal and burnt winding from the previously failed compressor! Oil should still be nice and clean in a 20+ year old compressor so long as nothing has contaminated it.

Hi Axel, Here are a few things that can cause trips on low oil pressure, 1, Crankcase heater failed 2, Low oil level 3, Worn bearings or oil pump 4, Blocked filter 5, Oil dilution due to liquid refrigerant during running 6, Oil dilution due to liquid refrigerant during the off cycle 7, Wrong grade of oil 8, Faulty oil pressure switch 9, Compressor tripping on other control then oil pressure switch tripping I expect there are other causes too, i don't work on many systems with oil pumps!

Hi Naveed, I have a Refco 21702 oil pump which fits in the oil can and pumps the oil back into the compressor. If i don't use that then i pull a vacuum on the compressor and put a hose in the oil can and suck the oil in that way. My video "Copeland Hermetic Compressor Oil Change" shows my had pump at around 4 minutes into the vid.

Think all comp manufacturers recommend vibration eliminators are inline with the crank shaft as i'm sure you know. Its not perfect but we did what we could in the time we had, the original install had been done with plumbing solder and the original vibration eliminator was bent into an 'S' shape as the pipework didn't line up! None of it is clipped so at least its free to move... It all wanted re installing with the condensing units outside, i believe the system has been replaced now with new!
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 11 жыл бұрын
Yes there has been a few burnouts on the system, plus it was piped with plumbing solder and flux...
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 11 жыл бұрын
You will need to check for leaks on the plate and sump plug etc, then vacuum the system and compressor, once it has reached a good vacuum let the refrigerant back out of the reciever and open up any service valve still shut e.g. head valve. Then you should be able to run the system keep an eye on the oil level. I don't test the oil quality, on this size of compressor its cheaper to change than send samples for testing. Depending on country you may need certification to work with refrigerants!

@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 4 жыл бұрын
On smaller compressors there is no need to change the oil unless it gets contaminated as in this case, they'll run 20 plus years on the same oil. Bigger compressors 15/20hp plus have service intervals depending on make and model where its recommended to change the oil every so many thousand hours of operation. If in doubt check with the manufacturer.

Thanks very much for the response. I have a 2 head KAT4-100 compressor and never did a full oil change. One head is running hotter than the other and is tripping the breaker only sometimes. Gotta figure out if its the 20 year old breaker or 20 year old oil! Gonna change em both. Thanks.

Hi heavy, can you please elaborate the wiring made to this compressor? does it have pump down timer when the temperature is reached? the temperature sensor is connected to the compressor directly?
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 7 жыл бұрын
On this system the thermostat directly controls the compressor (via a contactor). When the system needs to cool the thermostat sends a live feed to the low pressure switch, high pressure switch, thermistor module, and overload relay, if all these safety devices satisfied the contactor will energise and run the compressor, the solenoid valve opens when the compressor starts. This is the factory wiring for this system though i believe it would be better if the thermostat just controlled the solenoid valve and the system pumped down and turned off via the low pressure switch.

I am not 100% sure on these as they have an oil pump, I think its 4GS if mineral oil which I think is a 48 weight POE, the non pumped ones its 3GS or 32 weight. Best to confirm with the agents or a compressor rebuilders.

Hello Everyone, I have a problem with a compressor emerson copeland D8SJ1-6000BWM / D. mounted done me a lot of oil despite that I changed segmentation! I will like to advice from you thank you for avanace
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 8 жыл бұрын
+Mohamedwalid Doussa I am not too sure what you are asking, maybe something got lost in translation. If the compressor oil level keeps dropping it can be there is liquid coming back in the suction line. It can be due to bad valves in the cylinder head, it can be due to a bad oil separator or blocked oil filter. Also if the crank case heater is faulty it can make them pump oil out when the compressor starts from cold. Sometimes different makes of oil do not mix well and make foam which gets pumped away. There are other thing too than can cause oil problems.

Hello, I have a copeland KAJ3-0075-CAG. its about 15 years old. Doubt theres been much done as far as service. Now its short cycling on low pressure. I can see the liquid line sight glass is full as well as the raw water heat exchange. soon as I turn it on the pressure drops until it turns off, which takes about 1 minute from initial start up. Also I see your compressor uses mineral oil? Can I use the same oil in my system. Running of R22 right now. Thanks
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 6 жыл бұрын
I'd suspect a faulty expansion valve or other restriction given the symptoms you describe, though lack of flow in the evaporator would give similar results. Mineral oil is compatible with R22, though some compressors use alkylbenzene oil for R22, best to check with the compressor or equipment manufacturers if unsure.

I see you use mineral oil I have a compressor from Italy with the refrigerator style compressor and they say to only use sincom 32 oil and it is quite hard to find any body with a alternative thanks
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 6 жыл бұрын
Your compressor would use a different type of oil as it is compressing air, this compressor pumps refrigerant so the oil is never exposed to oxygen or moisture. I would think an equivalent 32 weight air compressor oil would do. Also might be worth having a look on Amazon or ebay for the correct oil.

@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Julio, on this size of compressor there is no need to change the oil unless it has become contaminated some how. On bigger compressors there are oil change intervals, some big Frascold compressors we used to look after got an oil change every couple of years for example.

When changing that style of filter dryer do you need to pump down the system before you open it?
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 9 жыл бұрын
Tim Gomes Yes, you need to pump it down, though in big commercial systems i have seen them piped up with shut off valves and a bypass so the filter can be changed without stopping the system. If i get a system with a big moisture proble i will put a shutoff valve after the drier, that way i only need to vacuum out a small part of the system.

hi heavy, i have copeland semi hermetic comp, the liquid line is quite hot compared to the other compressors of the same model. can you please tell me whats going on? the compressor catches frost sometime as well. setpoint temp is 4'C. i can see bubbles in the sight glass.
@heavydiesel
@heavydiesel 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Fakhre, A hot liquid line is a sign of a dirty or undersized condenser or faulty fans, or possibly the system is working very hard, either due to high air temperatures by the condenser or high heat loads on the evaporator or a combination of these factors. (assuming its an air cooled condenser) There will be other things that can cause high liquid line temperature but that is what i can think of now!
@Fakhrealammm
@Fakhrealammm 8 жыл бұрын
thanks and sorry for the late reply back. the man culprit were condenser fans, 2 out of 4 are controlled by high discharge pressure and hence kicks on when pressure is high. changed the danfoss kp5 sensor and its good now.
