Easy "how to" video on changing the oil in an air compressor. Highly recommend changing the oil on your air compressor, assuming it's not an "oiless" system at the appropriate service interval. This will extend the life of your equipment.

@@ProjectFarm Hi Sir; I know you try to answer replies. I am somewhat concerned that HF is selling "Oil less compressors" In large size format of 20 gallon. I have taken apart dead, cheap 12v tire inflaters and found metal piston in a plastic cylinder. I get the cheap, get what you pay for. But to me, I think they are selling 20 gallon air tanks for $200. How durable could they be. I sure hope the thermal overload kicks in, when a seized compressor becomes an electrical dead short, fire hazard.

Nice info. When removing the drain bolt, the copper tube it is bolted into should not detach but stay screwed onto the bottom of the compressor. Hold the copper tube in place with a vice grip (do not clamp down too much), while removing the drain bolt. That should allow you to have more of a drain pipe closer to the edge and lessen chances for a spill. If the copper pipe unscrews anyway, then remove bolt once it is all out and refit the copper tube onto the compressor with thread sealer. Then replace drain bolt with new and soft gasket and gently tighten so this will be the one to come out next time.

And there was way more oil coming out then I put in Flushing with napa air compressor oil, then finish my break in run. Redrain and refill.

It's a good idea to stick a neodymium (N52 10mm x 10mm or so) to the outside of oil drain plug (even on the outside it will create a strong magnetic draw on the inside end of the plug bolt), OR permanently stick a larger N52 on the bottom of the oil pan.

Manufacturers seem to use only ceramic magnets inside transmission pans. First reason being they are cheaper and second that they have much better heat resistance than rare earth. You will need to get temperature rated rare earth magnets for inside an oil pan and perhaps outside also. The bigger and more the better!

Not as dumb as my mistake. The fill cap for my (very old) compressor was so well hidden and covered in dust that I didn't even see it. It took me a whole hour to change the oil by using a pipette to get the oil through the tiny breather port. I just assumed it was a shitty design, but went back to double check later, and sure enough I just hadn't looked hard enough. That damn job would've taken two minutes if I'd have known.

@@poopipeboy3033 Hahaha that's funny, love it. I have one where the oil fill port is in a pretty awful location, basically the oil fill needs to be extended, or I could have been a little smarter like PF and done the trick he did with the cardboard here. Either way, my solution was to find an old container (I think i used an empty hydraulic cement container), drill two holes in the lid, found some old kitchen sink side sprayer hose, cut the hose in half, put half the hose in each lid hole, found a shop vac hose adapter/reducer and duct-taped one sink sprayer hose into the smaller size of the shop vac reducer (it was still way bigger than the tiny sprayer hose), plugged the other side into my shop vac, turned on vac, and used other sprayer hose to suck the liquid out through the fill port. Aka, I build a homemade vacuum liquid extractor. And actually, it works pretty well other than having too short of a hose, lol. I bought a $15 Amazon Chinese pneumatic extractor which had WAY too small of a container, and the shop vac one I "built" is way faster. (I ended up cutting a hole (I was too lazy to walk outside and get a jigsaw or dremel, so I used a knife which was the absolutely wrong tool for the job) in the lid of a 5 gallon bucket and stuck the top of the pneumatic extractor into the bucket lid, and tried using the pneumatic extractor with a 5 gallon bucket, and the vacuum pressure made the bucket sides cave in, haha.)

You mentioned heating your shop ... I'm a big fan of 250-watt heat lamps. You can use 6 of them for the same amount of power as a 1500-watt space heater and that will heat quite a large area. They're 90% efficient at creating heat because they heat the filament to 5,000 degrees, much hotter than the heating element in a space heater. And, they last virtually forever. Plus, they can be put on switches, or a thermostat, or even a dimmer (although they have a shorter life then). Just be sure to use a lamp holder rated for them, they have ceramic holders that can take the higher temperatures, available in any farm supply, or even Walmart.

It was your video with the water in the engine after the application of the motor kote that impressed me! BETCHA SLICK 50 WON’T DO THAT🤔🤔 I jumped on Amazon and ordered it five minutes after your video since then.........I’ve added it to the engine IN my Chevy AND The power steering on that same Chevy and now I think when it’s time to change the oil in my diesel mahindra tractor and my air compressor! THEY BOTH SIT for long periods of time, sometimes months between uses and if the parts inside are COATED that will help for really cold starts like 15 below zero and I NEED them to work! I am going to stop by the Chevy garage and explain the fix to their noisy power steering pumps! Thanks for the heads up and thank you for protecting our nation our military deserves a thousand times the support you get! I watched a video and I forget who did it however it’s evidence lead me to believe that we are seeing so much MORE PTSD when you consider the veterans World War II, or the Korean War because our military isn’t doing anything different? IT’S OUR SOCIETY THATS AT FAULT!! These folks in many cases come home to an empty apartment with no fanfare no community to back them up and are expected to return to productive lives........When no one or very few in their community understand what they’ve been through so there is no soft catch for them? It makes perfect sense to me after World War II and Korea our families our communities were much closer than they are today............... think about Mayberry RFD? ❤️🇺🇸God bless🙏 you and all of those who serve this country 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸............ WITHOUT you....... we would just be another Third World shit hole🤔😢

John Possum scrub paint of from outside and use pure zinc to paint. fill inside with tank paint and then move/swivel the tank to coat its inside after that let it dry and spray the inside with car undercoat surface wax...no rust for centuries. Or just don't do any of that and spray inside with oil and move it around to coat inside with oil. Always draft in water from the inside

Any guesses why that's happening? I have the oil level exactly halfway in the sight-glass, and I used oil meant for air compressors (ISO 68).

Do you have a recommendation for very cold environments and an unheated shop?....I finally gave up on HF compressors, and got a 30 gallon Dewalt, I broke the compressor in per the instructions then changed using DW's oil but also cut in 4 ozs. of Marvel Mystery Oil to the 12 ozs. my compressor calls for to hopefully help with the extreme cold...I also hung a heat lamp and reflector above the compressor to warm it on the coldest days. Can you think of anything else to help with the extreme temperatures I experience in Nebraska? Thank you for everything you do, I've based many purchases from your videos.

Single viscosity SAE 30 weight, non-detergent oil is fine to use in most air compressor and power washer pumps. It's inexpensive and most hardware stores carry it. Change it yearly to extend pump life.

The compressor from my parents is 16 years old and never had an oil change so I had made it and had changed the oil and drained the tank. In the engine there was no more oil but still oil sludge disgusting 🤢 by the way the compressor had run for 10 years without air filter :/ Btw. In Germany there are special standards for compressor oils mostly a VDL ISO 100 oil is used.It is a 50l Tank with a 2.5 kilowatt motor. He holds 170ml of the oil.

About 20 years ago, I bought a craftsman oil- less compressor for my garage. I don’t use it for much more than doing checks on my brakes on my wife’s car in my pick up truck, and changing tires and adding air to all the vehicles in the family at times, and changing tires on my mini motorcycles, adding air, so my compressor probably only runs about 30 minutes per week when I’m working in the garage during the warmer months here in Pennsylvania there’s no oil in the compressor. I can see the piston and connecting rod if I remove the guard and look up into the bottom of the compressor. I had my doubts at first, but it seems to work. It’s a 20 gallon tank, single piston. it would not turn on one day when I energized the motor at the switch. So I figured it was blown up. I have it mounted on the shelf. I made Ford in the upper corner of my garage above my parts washing tub. I have my son come over and help me take it down, and I was ready to just go buy a new one. But I wanted to know what happened. I started by taking the cover off the electric motor. I found the reason it would not turn on in the first 30 seconds. The motor was filled with stink bugs that apparently found a nest in there to live in. I wheeled the compressor outside, and started digging the stink bugs out. I got the compressor to start.., After removing most of the stink bugs. Then I just used the air hose to blow out the rest of the stink bugs that found a home inside my electric motor. There were hundreds of them in there.

Excellent tip, think its something people overlook with compressors. With my compressor, its a big 3 cylinder one, I do a lot of car bodywork so it works relatively hard, I have put some lucas stabilizer and zx1 extralube into the oil, those two have made a huge difference to the amount of oil coming down the lines into my filters, almost none now, and before the electric motor would trip the inbuilt trip switch trying to start from cold when the temps got near freezing, now it starts right up no problem.

Hey Brother Ben Franklin was our first Postmaster General there is stamps dedicated to our military service the only thing is they came out around 1950 if you go on eBay or the world wide web and see military stamps you'll see them the honor you with stamps now when I show our military guys the stamps that I carry in my pocket I have to point to mr. Disney and say he drove for the Red Cross and he did and I love that he also worked with our federal government because when he owned the park he had the whole world coming to his doorstep and I'm sure there were some that were a little worrisome to our country okay definitely look up those stamps because I know if I was in the military I would want to see them and the whole country honored you with those stamps all right brother

You should always loosen or remove the fill plug, mainly because if you drain the oil, then can't get the fill plug off you are in for a bad time trying to get oil back in it Either way great video! Definitely needed to get changed...kinda funky and with fresh oil it definitely should extend the life of that compressor

I have the 60 gal Kobalt compressor. Per manual, change first 50 hours then every 3 months or 200 hours whichever comes first. Other then the recommended Kobalt compressor oils, Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30. Capacity 47.4 ounces. Hopefully providing a rough starting point. I also have a 20-30 gal Craftsman Professional compressor, true 2 hp, 240V. Change oil about 4 times in 45 years! Still runs like new, Ha ha. Huge difference between Craftsman and Craftsman Professional (commercial duty). That sucker cost me more than the 60 gal Kobalt adjusted for inflation.

I didn't notice "12V air compressor/inflators torture test (are they all total garbage)" in your Public Service playlist. Time inflating a tire from flat to 50, repeated after 1,6, and 24-hour burn-in? After using them once or twice, I can beat the last couple I've bought with an old-school bicycle pump -- and I'm lazy! Thank you for what you do, and keep enjoying your "retirement". You can prevent that oil drain problem with a 4' hose -- once you find the designer... :>

I have a modified Hitachi nail gun compressor converted to a small shop compressor. The quick connect was changed out to automotive. Less air leaks. The plastic line to the gauges was changed to brass. An oiler was added to the compressor for air tools. Anti-vibration foam was added around the top to muffle noise. An electric cooling fan was added to the vent area on the compression piston. Basically, these are designed for nail guns, not shop tools. Has 4.2 cfms, runs all but some grinders & saws. 8 gallons means quick fill-up time. Now I'm running my compressor on 5W-40 euro synthetic motor oil. Runs great...

Hmm.... i have a dewalt emglo hand carry compressor about 4.5 cfm... circa 2000. I ran it on its initial fill for 15 years, DIYer home use so not high hours. Changed it 5 years ago. Ill change it again in 2030. Far more concen to me is keeping rust outta tank. Since I dont paint with it about every three months after I drain it I put about a teaspoon of air tool or compressor oil in the tank, rotate it 360 degrees on all axiseseseseses (cant recall plural of axis) and leave it in which yes gets a bit messy when used with the blowgun. Tank is rust free after 20 years so it works. BTW this is a marvelous compressor, dewalt bought emglo, owned em for a year and sucked all the engineering secrets out of the company then tried it themselves. Probably not as good who knows.
