COPENHAGEN: Cathedral 'Church of Our Lady' (Vor Frue Kirke)

Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen, Denmark - the Church of Our Lady (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke) in Copenhagen in Denmark. Let's go visit the magnificent 'The Church of Our Lady' (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke) Cathedral in Copenhagen, Denmark, located next to the main building of the University of Copenhagen. The present day version of 'The Church of Our Lady' (Vor Frue Kirke) Cathedral was designed by the architect Christian Frederik Hansen in the neoclassical style and was completed in 1829. The pediment of 'The Church of Our Lady' (Danish: Vor Frue Kirke) Cathedral is decorated with bronzes of Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The interior is likewise decorated with the twelve apostles (one in front of each of the piers of the central nave), the Risen Christ displaying the wounds in his body (in a niche above the altar) and in front of the altar the baptismal fount in the form of an angel holding a large scallop shell, all in Italian carrara marble. All of these sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Thanks Vic for your tour of this magnificent neo classic Danish cathedral which I had not heard of before. I am a big fan of sculptural art and the ones shown here were superb. One is amazed at the craftsmanship and work involved.The cathedral is also a great tribute to the Danish reputation for stylish design

The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen is also the guy behind the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument and Prince Józef Poniatowski Monument in Warsaw, Poland and maybe more (internationally) famous the Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal / Lion of Lucerne) in Lucerne, Switzerland. That last one is really amazing in my opinion. :) He even made the Tomb monument to Pope Pius VII, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, even though Thorvaldsen himself was a Protestant. That's a pretty odd (but cool) thing I think. :P
