Asha Bhonsle said in an interview that RDB had every possible song as needed by the producer and he rarely left a Producer without giving a song to his satisfaction. Now we know that he had all the copied tunes ready. . Anu Malik also claimed in an interview that later in his career, he had to follow RDB way of dealing with the producers who discarded his original tunes. . Bhappi Lahari is one unique personality who had recorded songs ready and producers just had to pick what they wanted as it already had been completely recorded. So he stole left and right from anything he heard of. 😂😂😂

Knew a third of these due to quizzing in college. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. Clementine. The Arabian Nights orchestration by Ron Goodwin. Jamaica Farewell. And others. But after gaining global access through internet in mid 90s, got shocked more & more. My pride about mellifluous melody of songs from the golden era has been burst. We owe it to the Americans & the Western Folk songs. No arguments. Unfortunately there are comments justifying this plagiarism. No wonder creativity is dead in India.

How did someone growing up in the analogue era of 70s & 80s know about Western originals & their rip-offs? 3 major factors - most quiz shows had the popular audiovisual rounds where variety of questions were asked based on clips played at the venue - being schooled in convents I was exposed to pop, folk, country, rock & jazz at an early age - Calcutta was the hotbed of jazz, blues, folk & rock in the 70s & 80s The same applied to movies as well with Mahesh Bhatt leading the way as the ultimate "copy & paste" director. I remember watching Someone To Watch Over Me after Jurm. 15 minutes into the Hollywood movie I realized that it was the original & Bhatt had literally copied most of the scenes for Jurm. I was shocked at his audacious sense of impunity.

There are some songs that have been influenced or inspired by other songs. Although, it's possible that two songs may sound similar if one just listens to only a small part of both songs. For example, if someone listens to two songs of the same raag then they may sound similar at some point. I believe what the music directors should do is they should give due credit if they blatantly copy any older song. Or at least, should openly accept that they have taken a particular mukhra, antara, or catchy tune from a particular song and mixed it with other elements.

Shankar-Jaikishan have produced one very internationally famous original song " Jaan Pehchaan Ho " from movie Gumnam ( btw one song- Gumnam hai koi - from the same movie is copied ). But still that one song of the duo made impact worldwide. 🙏🏼. PS: Would be groundbreaking if someone finds out that even that song was ...u know (which is unlikely , hopefully !)

Look up many Russian and Central European Romantic era music composers, they use to travel to rural areas to learn their culture, and use those tunes in their compositions. Folk songs are supposed to be part of our shared heritage. Nobody "owns" them.
