Wow! I'm surprised by this really good performance, one of the best I've heard. Here, he doesn’t have that small, compact German sound he has on other recordings. Certainly a full-bodied clarinet sound, with a great range of tone and dynamics. Technically on top of everything, which you'd expect from Leister. Nice interpretation as well. This is a piece where it's difficult to find a performance that's satisfying overall. I like some sections of some performances, but not others. However, this does the job.

Leister’s dark German sound adds something interesting to this performance. Plus they all overcame Copland’s lousy conducting. Brilliant composer, lousy conductor.
