COPPELIA (Act III Pas De Deux, Variations, and Finale)

Here's Damian Woetzel and Nichol Hlinka absolute perfection in the Act III "Wedding Pas De Deux," Variations, and Finale, from Balanchine's COPPELIA. Alexandra Danilova had taught Gelsey Kirkland and me this as we were supposed to do the premiere (Patricia McBride and Helgi Tomasson ended up doing it because Gelsey and me had so foolishly left the company...dammit). The solo Balanchine choreographed for me was entirely different than what Damian does here but the girl's solo is exactly as Danilova staged it. In any case...this is fantastic dancing from both of them!

I love seeing these early videos of Damian Woetzel. He was always my favorite dancer in my early days of attending ballet performances at NYCB. It is dancers like Damian Woetzel that inspired my to learn more about ballet.

I agree with you John. Nicol Hlinka is a beautiful dancer and I always enjoyed her performances. And Damian Woetzel is amazing. I think Coppelia was the first full-length ballet I saw when I was a very young child. Bravo.

Thank you John. I missed you when you left, but was gad you were helping extend the vision to L.A. I loved Nichol Hlinka and always thought she was largely overlooked in the blazing light of her fellow principals at the time.
