Baryshnikov is the best, in all senses, but Zavialov the last one is also very good

Interestingly, this variation was originally created for the ballerina Rita Sangalli's debut in "La Source" at the Opéra in 1873. Like many famous male variations in the classical repertoire, it was originally created for a woman! 🙂

Seriously did he do the splits at the end, I could not contain my laughter (the dog in the next door apartment started barking). All he needed was pom poms!

Coppélia as all the same classical ballet. Or Coppélia as a ballet with character. For Hungarians this is THE Coppélia. Maybe not the best solo, but the best Coppélia I have ever seen. Funny, colorful, full of life. Does not contain untalented and castrated character dances...Or boring, uniform classical variations - does not matter what kind of music is on...

Love the first, like the third, the second is strange, and the fourth a fright. All dancers give their best but nothing can really save the fourth...

but what you mean ? is the coreoghraphy that you don't like l guess ,because zavialov was an excelent dancer at his time

Agree enthusiastically with you ! The fourth one is bizarre and the split is nearly comical. Despite Zavialov's abilities, the choreo is just silly.

Zavialov was a terrific dancer (and his wife too, who was a terrific Swanilda)... pity he has to dance such drivel here.

ballet janie I wish I were in Colorado, high on weed, because I'd watch the end of that variation landing in a split over and over and think it was the funniest thing ever performed.

It is really not fair to show other male Ballet Dancers after Mikhail Baryshnikov. None of them compare.

FRANZ VARIATION, PETIT AND 540 : have you seen Patrick Dupond in Petit's Coppelia? He does indeed do a very tasteful 540 .. Or perhaps it is the precursor to a 540, a windmill. It's a glorious and joyous performance .. It's on my channel .. You should check it out!! After Dupond most others are meh!!!

I think its what I have heard called a Helicopter which is the precursor to the 540 --I like almost anything with Dupond -- and yes its the Dupond clip with Khalfouni! Also are you aware of the ABT version with Messac and Bissell -- not a wonderful video but anything with Patrick --

You've done it! So the second is Laszlo Seregi (?), the third - Balanchine and the fourth - Vinogradov. Who is the first?

+Navarre Brixen I've seen them in a few ballets, especially anything with Baryshnikov. While they are stunning to see, most of the time they seem to be tossed in just to please an audience that loves tons of high jumps. They just don't make sense to me, except, as you say during the Corsair variation. I'm not an expert by any means. I just became a ballet enthusiast in the last year and have been trying to watch as many videos as possible to learn what I like and don't like. These comparative videos have been extremely educational. Thank you.

But really, the best is Kumakawa's. i've never been a huge fan of the Balanchine Coppelia (which was revived by the SF Ballet) and, much as I love Helgi who was always top notch, it's not a very impressive variation.
