Copper River Salmon Dipping near Chitina, Ak 2013

The very hottest action we've had in Chitina in 40+ years of dipnetting. This has nothing to do with where we parked, and everything to do with 1.3M fish coming back that year! Eight fish in one scoop, six fish in another, four more in another. Sockeye salmon finning and coming out of the water.

+davao0506 The fish are relaxing in the eddie, out of the current. They are so accustomed to using full power in their trip up the river that they forget that it doesn't take very much energy to stay in this slack water and so sometimes they swim too hard and breach.

There are dozens of holes like this about 4 miles downstream from the bridge near Chitina on the Copper River. They are all down in the canyon where the water current forms big, slow eddies where the fish can rest out of the main current.

+Maurice Brown The water is fed from very active glaciers and in June they are melting fast. The brown is tiny bits of sand and rock broken off by the glacier and being carried to the Copper River Delta down by Cordova.
