It’s been 15 years since I rolled my last Copercoat. Watching you has my neck and shoulders tied up in knots. CC is so heavy and hard to roll. Now I’m going for a massage, suggest you do the same, you deserve it. After almost 30 years of living abroad, I can assure you the CC is worth the work & money.

Seabird is as beautiful as a white sŵan! So graceful and sleek, you two make the perfect team for this project! You have worked miracles with that boat! I think you have probably ɓlazed a new viability and financial path with this boat as follows: Sure, you can buy a brand new factory product which will suffer a massive depreciation the minute you sail it outside the harbour! While not everyone gets as fortunate as you two with your 1 Euro boat, nevertheless I suggest that you have opened a pathway esp for our young people dreaming of getting into a boat that otherwise may pose insurmountable barriers to doing so! By your choice of what has turned out to be a bare hull, you have given yourselves maximum flexibility in building YOUR boat at minimal cost to yourselves. I take pleasure in wishing you both Bon Voyage and fair winds! 😅

From the scene showing you mixing - I think it was not enough and also you need to keep mixing as the copper powder sinks to the bottom of the mix.

Hi, great job , looking so pretty!!! So I now see from your video the runs you got ! Ok live with it , So hand sanding wet should get into the the small valleys on the bottom And wet sanding cuts faster than dry sanding (but very messy). You can also wet sand when boat is in the water too but that might be too hard!!! And it’s a big boat! Re the stanchion based. I think the deck is too thin ( after 40 years for sure) . Do you have any thick fiberglass pieces 10-13mm or so? Maybe from dumpster? If you bonded this under the deck with thick resin mix it should stiffen up the deck , extend maybe 100mm beyond the bolts . This should really help. That gooey sealant was probably ‘Butyl tape/putty’. It’s softened by gasoline or oil based solvents ( carb cleaner?). So if you have any more??? Cheers Warren

Guys you didn't have the have the advantage of a blank sheet, you've got a deep understanding of your own boat and it's probblems and make it stronger and better than when it was first built ❤
@howiefeltersnatcher4 ай бұрын
You needed to mix the copper coat better and you need to let it dry more in between coats I would suggest a different mixing attachment and container mix while adding the copper I would do one more coat after sanding to try to get a finish you like Mixing in a square bucket probably didn’t help either use a smaller mixer attachment on your drill and spend extra time mixing it

Maybe use Butyl tape to seal stanchion bolt holes. I used this from recommendation of next boat who replaced his whole deck, Used Butyl and also a little clear silicone, or sika. You can also put a small piece of butyl temporarily in hole to keep rain out, with simple remomovablility.

I'm somehow jealous: What a great job you did. Awesome! By the way: The sticky stuff under your railing poles is called "Butyl" (known as the brand name "Teroson". It was long time neglected, whilst stuff like Sikaflex came up. Right now Butyl experiences a renaissance. Maybe because it's well known for staying sticky for a lifetime (as you experienced...) - and waterproof even in saltwater. Some boatbuilders in Germany recommend Butyl for some sealing tasks. Stay healthy and stable. Rob.

I liked your initial introductive video. Getting an artistic vibe. Oh yes ..the boat's ok too... Oh btw. Cracked gel coat under stanchions etc = bad backing. For some reason, or just for being cheap, penny washers and plates the same size as the base are normal now. It's not enough in a stress situation on a flexible substrate.

Suggestion for future: Regarding Coppercoat application and the "runs". Runs are caused by applying too much paint. You should try using a roller with a shorter "nap" like a 1/4 inch roller nap as opposed to a 3/8 inch nap....and so on. Also spreading the paint farther out....even if it means going over it twice. Restored several old wooden boats over the years but it been eons ago now haha.

I see a lot of growth in your video production- getting artistic! I liked your beginning today with the shadow shot. The inherent beauty of Seabird is showing. What a gorgeous boat! I did Coppercoat on my little Pocketship. It also was a bit uneven, but I’ve think it will still have all the protection. When she launches it will all be underwater and you won’t have to think about any uneveness. If you go to coarse sandpaper for the drips take care, as it is a thin coating! I hand sanded around those where necessary.

For long sanding jobs on vertical surfaces, place a ladder behind the work area and hang the sander from it with 'Bungee Cords'. They will take most of the weight off your arms and can be adjusted by using several shorter lengths that can be added or removed to allow work at different levels. Your arms will thank you... bonne chance avec ton travail! 😍👍

lovely job. but - I always wonder how bad the hull would get between haul outs - without any anti foul or copper? I only see the tremendous amount of work involved and see that typically people haul out every year or two - with rigorous hull scraping in between. And don't get me started on the amount of time spent "fairing" the hull! I wonder if anyone has actually performed a real study in a full size simulation tank or even virtually on the knots gained or lost on an "unfair" and "un coated" hull. I see you guys do a ton of great work and it hurts me to see it. I guess the only way to find out is to get my our boat (again) and see for myself.

I had similar result with Coppercoating by a professional, only sanded a little with 'blotches'. I found it fouled a little the first year, but the lifted out it reacted all over (turned green). Now in second year it seems tk be working much better, hardly any fouling. Wish I'd sanded it a little more like you have. But it works fine, very light slime and Ive found the 'Scrubbit' brush works really well to remove it whilst in the water.
