Old video but very nicely done. I am 49 and have NEVER done a trans rebuild of any kind. I have rebuilt motor's, diff's and everything else but not transmission's. Great video, Thank you, I have a 1980 GMC with 8v71 with 13 Fuller Road Ranger. I wonder if you have a video explaining the Hi/Low and Direct/ OverDrive airline and operations. Mine is not shifting into Hi-overdrive for my final highway gear. I cleaned out the plunger and O-rings on the back lower left side, it was dirty and stuck. moving good but still not shifting. Thanks.

Man that's old I remember my pops building that one when I was young (non multi mesh style). I get a few oldies and that old aux section housing is a pain I need 2 people hold and place the countershaft

I use a socket to hold it away from the mainshaft.

Thanks for sharing. The 13 I learned to drive shifted like an 8 with low back and left. The last 4 could be split or you could skip splitting and use the button for overdrive.

That's not how a RT613 works, it's like a 15 spd but 2 ratios overlap, RT913, RT9513 etc split last rang like you had, later RT6613 model box splits like that too but not early models, if they had a single plate push type clutch they would have an extra button for internal trans brake if they had a dual plate clutch it was a pull type with external clutch brake.

Well, That's not what I do for a living. But it's what I have to do to stay in business. I do all my own engines transmissions, differetials, final drives, hydraulic pumps, electrical, ac repair, Basically everything. I am our companies only mechanic..

These are pretty easy to rebuild. The auxiliary section is much easier to put together if you put it together with the transmission standing up.

Q: how much do the twin countershafts weigh in the main transmission and in the auxiliary transmission each? I know the rto-613 weighs 622lbs. and the rto-610 weighs about 425lbs. but If I had to guess most of the weight mainly comes from the cast iron transmission cases and the oil or does the weight of the countershafts play an equal part of the overall weight of the transmission? (plan to adapt a ford 300 i6 to an eaton 10 speed in my 67 ford pickup.)

To make noises sometimes..But it could be any number of things really? low air pressure at the trans, a chipped tooth, worn mainshaft, through shaft bearings..noises sometimes are hard to diagnose?

I'd say your correct sounds like the high/low synchro. Make Damn sure you keep everything in TIME. Mark everything. That is crucial!!! If that is done, No problems. About a 4 or 5 hour job

Ecellent video, but I do have one semi-unrelated question; do all of the RTO transmissions have direct in the away and back hole and the OD on the dash? My brother had what i believe was a nine over behind a cummins in an Int. Eagle a few years back with that shift pattern and I have always wondered about it since I haven't come across another one since. Keep up the good videos.

that is most likely the range syncro..A couple hundred bucks and you can pull the back box off the trans with it in the truck to repair it not too bad of a repair..You can do it in half a day.

I have a straight 10 speed and I think my shaft is going bad, I hear wabling sound when I have it on the 10th gear while going down hill how much dose it cost to repair this things

Go ahead and drop the oil and look for metal..it might be stuck to the magnets inside the trans, use a borescope or a piece of wire to fish it out ..You can get a really nice borescope from Harbor Frieght for under $200..you will wonder how you ever got by without it..also the superliner does that when I run disimular tires on it..even the same size 11R14.5 tires from diferent manufacturers can be taller or shorter..even newr tires with older tires can cause the inter axle lock.."POWER DIVIDER"

Ok,So my simple eaton 10 speed has 1.5 mil on it- It grinds when I go back to the low 5- Has for years-Never got worse- So is it the synchro- Air Supply? What should I do Before I drop it.....I have no experience with building/tearing em down- Ive done a Clutch- bout it

I always enjoyed rebuilding these 13's and 10 speeds. The 600 series. You just don't see them anymore like you use to. Do you know of any businesses where I can purchase RTLO 16913-18, RTLO18913-18 and 8LL cores/takeouts for rebuilding? Anywhere you would know of in the US would be fine. Thank you.

i'm not sure about this old antique, i think its a design level 5 he is showing due to it does not have multi-mesh gearing. but the design level 6 you do not want to do this! it will make the trans almost useless. it doesnt just effect high gear, it effects all the others too. if you want a proper rtoo14613 then simply find a b ratio 9 speed and put your back box on it. the front 3 gear sets are different part# to get proper steps otherwise you will have some large rpm gaps and some small rpm gaps between the gears. an rto14613 is .86 o/d if a b ratio 9 front box is used then you will have multiple o/d options like stick in direct with upsplit =.86 stick in o/d downsplit =.73 stick in o/d upslit = warpdrive :)

Wrong, Was an RT613 is now RTO613. Would you like to see the build plate? This was a conversion right out of an Eaton manual that listed parts required for the conversion with Eaton part numbers.

There is another video on my channel of this same conversion of a RT6613 which is the "Multi mesh" gear set you speak of. It was converted with Eaton parts. RTX is the same set up but the X stands for overdrive with a cross shaft top cover so the shift pattern is conventional.

New bearings and syncro in the back box I would think, but check the air lines, filter regulater, and pilot valve as well. I can walk you through it.

no...If the od is in the back box...you split the gear to get the OD it can be in the conventional position or it could be a triple over if its against the dash.

If the shifter is jumping out then most likely the fork groove in the sliding clutch is worn out in the main box or a broken detent spring, if it's just bucking and hitting neutral then most likely the sliding clutch for the spliter is worn, which could be due to low air pressure should is 55 psi at the spliter cylinder.

You don't even have to buy a gear set...you can just do the same with the mainshaft gears as you did with the gounter shaft gears..just get the rebuild set with the bearings seals and snap rings..

great video!! i have an rt-613 in my old road boss with the small v-8 cat rated at 210 hp. (its an 1160 cat) I was going to do an engine swap with a 3208T but enerything i read said that the rt was a low hp engine and that they will not handle the higher hp. any thoughts or input?

The book says 600 with the injectors...I would like to carry it To Dunn NC, there is a in floor dyno there and I would like to just see what it really is at the rear wheels. The SuperDog was Certified @ 350 at the rear wheels before I did anything to it..It has been running along side a 475HP 12.7L serise 60 Detroit and it walks away from that so I don't know..

Great video. Maybe you could help me I have a 9 speed and a mild clunking noise started about 6 months ago only in 9th gear when driving down the road usually 65 mph or more. Hear about every few minutes. Now also hear sometimes in 7th and 8th. It sounds exactly like when you are using the air shift to go from low to high and go threw gears again. To me sounds like the dog gear between inter. and direct you spoke about. And yes, I admit I shift a lot without the clutch. Easy fix from back.

Great. I have a question. I have a super 10 with 390 gear housing. (My cuz swears it had a 355 gears when he broke some tooths.) So I don't know what gears I have. I bought a 13 cuz everyone was like it's the best transmission out there. So I bought one and it turns out it was a direct transmission. It's basically a 9 with the tail of a 13. And man it sucks. Every gear doesn't seam to pick up speed. I will be in 13 gear in about 25secs. and my top speed will be 68mph at 1800 on 24.5 tires I'm burning so much gas it's not funny. Any help. The Trans came out of 86 Kenworth 18 wheeler I believe. Don't remember the year. Any help I would appreciate thanks again for all your vids

although you can change the gears around on the countershafts IF you have a good press you cannot reuse the mainshaft gears because they have different hubs on the back .I noticed you had one on the table with the sliding (DOG) inside it.also they do not cost an extra 1000 dollars in fact they are the same price for a rt or rto makes no difference In price.its all a mute point anyways since nobody runs this trans anymore ,its been updated like 5 times

Check the air pressure first at the splitter cylinder (lower left) should be min 45psi if ok then most likely aux drive gear in aux section is pooched, most likely clutching teeth are worn

The gear is shifted by air that I had to replace! That means "I" don't have control over the shift.

It's not the rt that denotes torque..R= Roadranger...T= Twin Countershaft...6=600ft/lbs of nominal torque and 13 stands for 13 speeds foreward.. RTO, O= Overdrive..This trans will hold the torque of a 3208T...Look at the HP rating its only like 225HP.. Its temp that kills them anyhow..if your unsure put in an oil temp guage and keep it under 250..Big blue doesnt get over 200 most of the time..

You can go to Eatoncom/literature and download the parts and service manuals for free..you can look at the parts manual to get the order of the assembly if you pay attention and the service manual will walk you right through proper assembly..Hop this helps/

Syncro in the back box..You can replace it without pulling the trans. The parts are a couple hundred $..Not a bad job at all..
