Copperplate Alphabet

I have used three of my favourite nibs to execute this full majuscule alphabet. The first is the Manuscript Pen Company's Hiro Leonardt EF Principal, next is the William Mitchell's Gillott303 and the last one is the Speedball Hunt 22B.
As you can see, they all produce varying lines of thickness for both the hairlines and the shades (downstrokes). They all respond differently and this shows in the spring and bounce of the tines of the nib.

I really like how you flourish and shape the W and related letters, but I'm having a lot to trouble producing the right shapes. Could you please do an in-depth video about the letters W, V, M, and N, and their variations? The other letters I struggle with are Y and U.

+Christine Shaw I completely agree Christine but two issues - 1 is the time to do it and 2, I never upload full alphabets where they can be copied. A friend once did this and was walking down the street to see someone had wholesale copied one of her alphabets and made a font of it. So have to be very careful.

How are you doing the Copperplate script with a straight pen? Every tutorial I go to uses an oblique pen. Do you mind doing a tutorial on that? It would greatly help us who are just new to calligraphy and practicing with a basic set.

What nib is best for flourishing? For example, when u want to make a feather, I have seen many calligraphers who use Nikko G in making the feather. Btw, very impressive work :)

Your nib seems so flexible. Mine are all rock hard stiff. Should I try a paint brush? I've also tried dipping the nib further into ink because it doesn't last very long. I bet you're rolling your eyes and are thankful I'm not in your classroom. Sorry. I'm old and this is important for me to learn, in less than 10 years.

read the text just below the video - it tells you the nibs used. You have to prepare the nibs to use them. I have a video here which talks about nib preparation, this will help to keep more ink on the nib. Hi Paul. Your work is brilliant. I use a straight holder. I've heard advice that the nib should point to the top right of the pair or be parallel with the 55 degree slant. In this video, the nib seems to point more towards the top of the page. What advice do you have for those using straight holders about where the nib should face? Thank you.

The angle is deceptive in this video. The nib is almost parallel to the 55. The trick is NOT to twist your hand but the page. I developed a unique hold for writing with a straight holder. You can purchase the video on it on Shopify. It takes practise but dramatically changes your ability to make the shapes.

I've used and enjoyed both the Principlal and the Gillot 303. But what do you like about the Hunt 22B?

They all work differently and we use them for different papers. They are all fine and sharp. Of the 3 the Hunt is the least flexible but has a snap to it that is amazing.

+PaulAntonioScribe Thanks. When you say 'snap', do you mean how quickly it returns to closed position, for sharp contrast? It sounds a little like the Japanese nibs, like the Nikko G.

The Nikko Nibs I find too stiff. The material is too thick. Snap means spring back together.

Mukesh Sharma it depends on your lightness of touch. If you cannot write lightly you should practise with a pencil and learn the form first. That way moving to a nib means concentrating on the nib only and not the script as well. Try a Hunt 99, 56 or 22B

Mukesh Sharma I am in the process of writing a manual on Copperplate Script. I have been travelling for the past month so not been answering emails unless they were either related to the manual or work which needed to be forwarded on. There is a section in the manual on lefties which will assist you with acquiring a god grip.
