can't speak for Sophie! but as for me... we have a huge need to rebudget & redistribute money in police departments in the US. Cities like LA, NYC, Chicago have billion dollar budgets, but the crime has not gone down. but civilian abuse complaints have gone up. so we need to redistribute money to trained social workers, psychologists, care workers, etc. to be called instead. they should be called for mental health calls, food needs, domestic situations, etc. Perhaps they could start off visits with one police escort whose job it is to just observe, but eventually phase most (if not all) cops out. there are many reasons people call 911 here & we need to start using people other than armed, untrained cops to handle it. maybe for an active murder/crime scene an armed cop is needed, but for traffic tickets? for interviewing a rape survivor, like Sophie mentioned? for kids misbehaving in school? or for a woman deciding she wants to leave her abusive husband? we DONT need cops, we need community support & other professionals.
