To do that, you would just need to republish from Power BI Desktop. Datasets can't be copied within the service.

Great video as usual! The workspaces are a MASSIVE silo problem. My execs and C level users don't want to copy reports but pin to a dashboard in their workspace but this isn't possible at the moment. The only option is to build a million dashboards for them =[

What about sharing to another workspace. I want to have "Dev" workspace from which I can distribute reports to other workspaces. This way new version of te report should update other reports. Right now this is a copy of visuals without version update option.

Hi Patrick! I am huge fan of your work. I love the idea of copying report while keeping a common data set. I have a use case where I want to have same report in all my workspaces showing data filtered for specific workspace. When you refresh a report will it then refresh copies you have saved in other workspaces?

You refresh the dataset, not necessarily the report, although there is a visual cache that would be in play. But yes, the copied reports will reflect the data that is refreshed within the dataset it is referencing.

All this is available to copy report to new workspace. you can not copy a report to a old workspace ! and there is no option to migrate an old workspace to the new version of workspace so you can copy a report to it

This works perfectly fine however when i updated the source/PBI file and publish the report to 2 different workspaces i get these: 1. Publishing the report to the 1st workspace - Data was perfectly updated but when i checked the 2nd workspace where the report is copied to, the report is not updated. 2. And when i published the report to the second workspace (talking about the same report published from 1st workspace), The report duplicated and need to remove one. Please advise. TIA!

Great videos Patrick !! I have an issue. We have different environment like SIT UAT with similar DB structure but different DB Ips. We are currently using workspaces as SIT and UAT but every we need manually change DB ip and publish it if we want to promote it UAT from SIT. Any better way of doing it

In this case you cannot simply copy the report. You will need to maintain multiple copies of the data model in each workspace since the data is actually different. What I would do is parameterize the connection string in the Query Editor. As you move the report between environments, just update the parameters for server and/or database.

Hey Patrick, love your work. I have a report move issue and could use your advice. I have built a report ( report A) in workspace A, I have then built a second report ( report B) that connects to the same PBI dataset ( Dataset A) . I need to move both reports to a different workspace. I can republish Report A into Workspace B via pbix file, and I can see a copy of Dataset A now also exists in Workspace B, but I'm struggling to then republish report B into Workspace B. I can do the copy to new workspace option as you demo'ed but the resultant report B in Workspace B cannot be then exported to pbix, which is important for us in maintaining the report. I don't seem to be able to change the data source for Report B in desktop from Workspace A dataset to Workspace B dataset. All advice appreciated.

No, the reports are separate from the dataset, which is what is shared between the workspaces. The report that is copied does not update when the the original workspace report is updated for visuals/new pages, etc. If you change the underlying data in the dataset, that will automatically be reflected within the reports that were copied from the original workspace. @Guy In A Cube is there a way to replace the copied reports when visuals are updated in the original report (report that is being copied) without having to delete the existing reports and make new copies into the workspaces?

Great! Thanks. I was looking for a way to share exactly the same Sales report to sales associates without going through RLS and this made it. But I have a problem when exporting underlying data to excel, the user doesn't have permission to do it. The user is a member of the workspace, in the report settings I chose summarized and underlying data under export data, and while updating the app I checked "Allow users to connect to the app's underlying datasets. But still the user can't export underlying data. Am I doing something wrong, or is that a premise for while copying a report to another workspace? Please help! ⛑🆘 Also, other question, how do you delete a dataset copied from other workspace?

Fernando Calero I COULD be wrong, but last time I checked the Power BI documentation (a few months ago), users cannot export underlying data from visuals unless they have Edit permissions in a workspace. If I am correct on that, then might I just say, it was a nonsensical change that Microsoft made and is quite irritating. If you don’t mind doing some development in .NET or Javascript, though, they have some GitHub repositories where you can get their developer tools and create a program to export it on your own. They have a Javascript repo and a .NET SDK.

Fernando Calero Nice. You could also check out a program called PBRS by ChristianSteven. It does exactly that and a LOT more, it’s just not cheap. I tested the software out, and it is VERY powerful. My company just didn’t go through with purchasing it. It will do every kind of data export you can imagine.
