A lovely work. I have heard a few pieces by Louise Farrenc, but her music should be played more often. I'm lucky to be playing this piece at a chamber music outing tomorrow. I'm a pianist, by the way.

Good luck! It's one of my favourite pieces of chamber music. I hope you get a good recording of your performance!

Women in general, and Louise Farrenc in particular, are poorly recognised among composers. Some of them were spouses ar sisters of geniuses and could not compete with him (Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann). Many other one were simply victims of social conservatism and traditionalism. A surprising exception was thee French baroque composer Jacquet de la Guerre, supported by the King Louis XIV in person. In France, we also have Lili Boulanger, Germaine Tailleferre, and still alive, the Franco-Finnish highly talented Kaija Saariaho and the franco-américain Betsy Jolas. Quite important also is the still alive Sofia Gubaidulina, a Russian composer now living in Germany. As we can see, the movement of "women liberation" brought fruits in musical composition. Louise Farrenc wrote excellent piano music, chamber music, and also orchestral music, showing a deep sense of orchestration. Let us compare this trio with Brahm's for the same formation. The architecture is equally solid, but the tone id=s much lighter. While we feel some automnal, life-ending atmosphere in Brahm's work, here the tone is quite serious but the music is lighter; air and life circulate in that work At a time when Offenbach was the French composer king, well before the French music rebirth after 1870, Having such a composer - in addition a woman - is a notable exception in terme od musical quality wll in line with a typical Franch style.

I actually prefer Clara Schumann's piano music over that by her husband. The Souvenir of Vienna, for example, is one of the best piano pieces ever composed. And she was venerated throughout her life for her abilities. It is not true that female talent was not recognised.
