Cora was always adept at seeing the totality of the situation. She saw the servants perspective that had been dismissed/ignored. It was Cora’s house and her responsibility to make sure her servants were cared for. She understood that where Isobel in her zeal to put Cora down by saying she didn’t have a “real” job didn’t understand that responsibility to care for her servants because she never really had servants.

Being lady of the manor, and running Downton WAS a huge job, that she did well, using the experience of centuries. A tourist in US, at Old Westbury Gardens, once had the temerity and ignorance to say to the daughter - but your mother never worked. The daughter pointed out, her brother managed 3 large properties, with a staff of 70, did ALL the social entertaining for her executive husband, and housed and cared for 30 orphans and refugees during the war. One can only wonder, what the idiot did.

Isobel was so insufferable during that season. I am so glad that Cora stood up to her and made it clear that Downton was indeed her house, that she and Robert OFFERED it as their part for the War effort and that Isobel was NOT the Florence Nightengale or Clara Barton she thought she was. Cora was like "Byeee Felicia!"

@@passiveaggressiveflamingo6851I can’t speak for OP, but Isabelle was so frantic and overbearing here perhaps because her only child, Matthew, had died and she was grieving and feeling purposeless. So she identified extra hard with her work. Maybe I’ve got it wrong, but I can see that this is such a great scene, because both women inspire compassion (Isabelle) and admiration (Cora).
@passiveaggressiveflamingo6851Күн бұрын
@ I get that but it’s not her house. She overstepped and then gave an ultimatum that was accepted. It’s common for people to try to cope with life stuff by overcompensating in other areas of their life or trying to cope by other means but when you make your issues other people’s issues they have every right to push back on that and not have it affect THEIR life.
@marblehead2500Күн бұрын
@@passiveaggressiveflamingo6851 I believe she had a role in administering the makeshift hospital there, due to her appointment and her previous work as a nurse; she did have some legitimate authority in managing the work going on, and as a liaison with the medical community. She had oversight of the nursing staff.
