I remember leaving the theatre when this movie came out and there were two critics in front of me. I could hear some of what they were saying. What they said about Coraline was accurate and yet very funny. Critic 1: “I really enjoyed that. Though I do think it might be too scary for some kids.” Critic 2: “Are you kidding? It scared the s**t out of me!”

that has to be the funniest but most annoying thing, like, you make cartoons that have scary moments, you make movies for kids, that are based on dangerous animals or dark humor, and then theres adult jokes linked into the scenes, like, do people not realize that movies, and kids shows are made by adults

Appearently the ones who made it thought the movie was too scary for kids so they had one of the filmaker's kids watch it and they said it wasnt too scary. Later on he asked his kid if it was actually scary and they said that movie was terrifying but they couldn't stop watching.

If you were paying attention to the Other Father's song, you'd realize that it was actually a warning. Making up a song about coraline. She's a peach (something to eat) she's a doll (how the other mother spies on her) she's a pal of mine (he actually cares about her.) She's a cute as a button to everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline (buttons for eyes) When she comes exploring, mom and I will never ever make it boring (how the other mother plans to lure her into staying) Our eyes will be on coraline (sewing the buttons into her eyes) And then the pause right at the end, before he pulls away, he looks right at the camera like he's saying, "Did you get that?"

27:10 when he called Coraline crazy is when she told him that she saw the lost Twin. Coraline describes one of the ghost (his grandma sister) and he didn't believe her. When he saw the picture he realized that the description of Coraline was correct so she wasn't lying, that's what the movie is implying.

I always find it fascinating how much we don't notice or think about the first time through. We see this tiny snapshot of Coraline's life and assume that her parents are neglectful and indifferent. But if you look at the big picture, it's easy to understand that they're dealing with a cross-country move, a serious work deadline, and the mother is likely dealing with chronic pain from the accident. The situation is temporary but Coraline doesn't get it, and we're seeing it through her lens.
@zoe_ryan99

Exactly my thought! It's annoying that most of these reactors hate on the parents but clearly don't see/pay attention to the important details in the movie. Even when I first saw this as a kid I knew they loved her very much lol.

The reason horror movies like to use yellow is because of the contrast of the doom and gloom with a bright, happy color. In this movie, Coraline is walking through a creepy forest while wearing her bright, yellow coat. In IT Georgie wears is bright yellow coat through the dark rainy day. When they use the light against dark, they are conveying "another world" into the story. That's how I've interpreted anyway. Also yellow raincoats are fire. I mean, it constrasts Coraline's blue hair and paler skin perfectly.

So there's this theory that Coraline's parents were being controlled by the other mother and that's why they're so indifferent to Coraline and that's how the mother knew what the right key was. And about the blue guy. If you notice he has a medal on his chest. He won this medal for volunteering in the Chenobyl incident.
@chipstarshine8150
@chipstarshine8150 Жыл бұрын
Another theory instead refers to the housing crisis and that the family was forced to find somewhere cheaper to live. The real mother was in a car accident which is why she’s wearing a neck brace and is probably suffering from pain which is probably why she’s acting more snippy than usual. On top of that, the parents had a deadline for their next magazine/book coming up and this is why they were in a rush to get that done as that is their main source of income for them. They were pretty strapped financially which is why they didn’t have a lot of money to get coraline the gloves she wanted or have decent meals. Once they got the book/magazine off the publishers and got paid they were able to focus on coraline and buy her the things she wanted. We are essentially shown this story through the lens of coralines perspective. Coraline doesn’t understand that her parents were struggling financially or that they had to focus extremely hard on getting their work done because no finished book to give to the publisher means no money. The parents aren’t trying to be neglectful rather they are just trying to make sure they are secure financially and stuck doing the boring adult stuff that we all have to do to take care of ourselves.
@SirKolass
@SirKolass Жыл бұрын
That theory is not true at all. If she could control people she wouldn't have to lure kids in. She didn't know that was the right key, she just tried it because it was different from all the others.

The thing about Coraline's parents - they weren't actually neglecting her; they were stressed about work to meet their deadline so they could pay the bills and feed Coraline (as they clearly cannot afford proper food currently). What we saw in the movie, was just a brief window of their lives with Coraline, not representing the whole - and because we see it through the eyes of Coraline (who also happens to be an only child, and therefore accustomed to a lot of attention), it comes across like they are ignoring her completely. But the moral of the story was that Coraline needed to be patient, accept that her parents had important work to do, and couldn't devote their entire lives to making her happy; she needed to learn that she couldn't always be the center of attention in the family.

This is one of those movie facts that you’ll see commented on every reaction of this movie, but the reason Mr. Bobinski’s skin is blue is because, looking at the medal he wears, he helped with the cleanup of Chernobyl. The other mother is the real villain, and the others characters were just puppets she created for impressing Coraline. Whybie shows her the photo because Coraline described his grandma's sister but he didn't know how they were younger, so when he saw the photo, he understood what Coraline said was real. The picture is important because it shows the doll! It shows it looked different before he gave it to Coraline! Also, about the other father, there’s a theory the other father and the other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible bodies are actually the bodies of the ghost kids. It’s mentioned in the book the other mother can’t create anything just transform other things. It’s also why other Mr. Bobinsky doesn’t have a true body, she didn’t have enough victims yet. Wybie only appears in the movie but it looks like he’s made of dust, may be the real reason he can’t talk?

1:40 On the Russian neighbor: Coraline takes place in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the US. Oregon and Washington have a large eastern European popluation, largely consisting of Russian and Czech people who immigrated to the US on religious visas during the collapse of the USSR. There's such a large Russian population where I live in southern Washington State that a lot of signage, especially in Doctor's offices and DMVs, are in both English and Russian.

I saw a theory somewhere that said the medal/pin on Bobinsky's shirt is one given to those who tended to the Chernobyl disaster, which is why he's blue. Interesting theory to explain away the weirdness.

In the welcome home message on the cake, there's a unique loop in the O that symbolizes dishonesty. She is welcome, but she's not home.

If you payed attention to the Other Mother during dinner, she didn't eat any of her food and we didn't see her eating. Prob means she doesn't eat human food and wants to eat Coraline or something-

Fun fact: the reason why Mr.B is blue and has a unnatural body is because of radiation poisoning, the badge on his shirt means he helped with Chernobyl radiation clean up

I'm glad she wasn't scared by this. It is one of the more scary ones for me. The paranormal, out of the world stuff. A dude with a hatchet don't scare me much. They are mortal and don't do well with a bullet to the chest. IJS. :D (that said Halloween is good fun movie)

You may not realize it but Coraline loses at the end. According to a fan on KZbin The Fangirl. Coraline ends up in the Pink Palace Limbo. The Other Mother is feeding off of Coraline life force. Once the key goes down the well she is trapped and the Other Mother has the key for the next victim.

Neil Gaiman must be the most lovable weirdo in literature today, Laika is the best animation studio out there (sorry Pixar!) and Henry Selick the wizard of stop motion. Put all this together, and you have Coraline!
