My main idea for the money is that after they are done with dnd (which I hope will never happen) they, in their last adventure, open the seas end get all of the money (a little happy ending, specially for Corazon, but I also love your idea)

Note that even when it became clear that throwing money into lakes wasn't paying off, Dob remained committed to it rather than cutting his losses. I'd say it's a case of the sunk cost fallacy.
