“Traditional people of Indian nations have interpreted the two roads that face the light-skinned race as the road to technology and the road to spirituality. We feel that the road to technology…. has led modern society to a damaged and seared earth. Could it be that the road to technology represents a rush to destruction, and that the road to spirituality represents the slower path that the traditional native people have traveled and are now seeking again? The earth is not scorched on this trail. The grass is still growing there.” - William Commanda, Mamiwinini, Canada, 1991 Beautiful song with so much truth in every word (which does indeed, need to "come out"). I believe what Cord Lund was referring to about the antelope seeking and morning the buffalo was they were once brothers freely inhabiting the same prairies. Today buffalo are "ecologically extinct" in the wild, while antelope still live freely. Not to trying to to sharp-shoot Corb's well-written song, but there are no "buffalo" in North America...they're called bison. Bison can't even breed with actual buffalo (Cape or Water) because they have a different number of chromosomes. There's also no antelope here either...they're called pronghorns which are part of the giraffe family. And I'm not even gonna mention the whole "Indian" name thing :-(

The cougars and bears are being seen more and more in suburban areas because we humans are expanding into the wild and taking natural habitats and along the way losing our survival skills etc. I think the antelope mourning the buffalo is his way of saying that even the animals know something is up and changing.

The antelope mourn the buffalo because they had a symbiotic relationship. Pronghorn are unable to forge for food in the snow and relied on the buffalo to do it for them. Glad you reacted to this, this is my favourite Corb song. Try S Lazy H if you are looking another good one.

As a few others have said S Lazy H is a must, but have a box of tissues.... The toughest of us crack with this one. But for a fun one listen to one of his first ones called the truck got stuck. I have every Corb Lund album, and have been listening to him since the beginning

In a nutshell he is talking about the inevitability of the truth being exposed, whether it be the truth about ourselves or the truth about the world around us.

the song is about the way the world is changing. and the antelope would stay with bison through the night to protect themselves from predator as bison could easily kill a predator. but with the decrease in bison population so goes the antelope as they dont have their protectors any more

You have to check out S lazy H (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIrFZJeIrrGAeJo) by Corb. Probably one of the most heartbreaking songs to any generational rancher, farmer or land owner. AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SONG.

As our world has changed due to man's encroachment, the animals have suffered, and some, like the buffalo, have disappeared. Our suburban areas are full of deer and wild turkeys. They have no place else to go. As Corb mentioned, even the grizzly bear is coming closer to man. Introduce global warming to this and there doesn't seem to be much hope left for wilderness and the wild creatures. Sad.

I didn't really understand the song. This one you have to reach deep and extrapolate what it means to you. I felt it was almost a metaphor for the ruination of nature by humanity, but as any well written story, you take from it what you need.

You're looking into this way too deep, and you're off base. Its a song about your night is ending the fire is dying out, and he thinking about the cougars are coming into yards. There are bears coming down out of the high country, and there's more human encounters. The elk bugals can be mournful sounding so as a writer trying to elicit more feeling, he said it's mouring the death of the Buffalo. Honestly, like a lot of his songs, it's for people who's been there.
