So around about 1961 my dad and some of his grad student buddies were building a radio telescope in central Illinois (and also a log cabin but that's another story). Anyway they commuted out to the work site in an Army 6x6 truck with drive on every wheel but the spare and they managed to get it stuck in the mud (springtime in Illinois, see). So they left it there for a week while they called around to the farms nearby seeing if anybody had anything they'd loan to pull it out. And eventually they found an old farmer who kept a pair of draft horses for old times' sake and he said he'd give it a try. Now my grandpa had grown up as a farmboy at the turn of the century dreaming of adventure and war (until he went in to Tashi Station to pick up some power converters but that's another story) and he always said "son, a rustic atmosphere is horse manure" but he'd always kept a fondness for draft horses. So my dad called him up to come out and see the horses pull the truck out of the mud. Well he did, and they did, and everybody ambled off contentedly into the twilight of their kind. It was real nice.

My buddy and I were mudding in his golf cart a few years ago before we were old enough to drive well we got stuck and a lady came along she said she uses her horses for pulling logs in competition and she’d give us a pull well she pulled us out it was quite the story

Many years ago I had a big Olds 98 that I used as a field car. I might've been 15 years old at the time. We had a couple of cars back then and about 400 to 500 acres of 'playground'. I was flying along in the weeds one day when I discovered, the hard way, that there was a drainage ditch hidden by the grass. Well, we tried and tried to get that car out of there... jacked it up, put all finds of stuff under the back, but nothing worked. So we walked over 1/4 mile back to the house with every intention of leaving the darned car right where it was. When my dad heard our tale of woe, he suggested I call my uncle and ask him for an assist. Dad said my uncle had an old tractor that might be helpful. So I called my uncle, who lived about 1/2 mile down the old country road from us. When I asked for his help, he readily agreed. He told me he'd be down with his tractor in a little bit. About 30 minutes later we heard this noise outside and walked out to see his ancient 1924-ish Ford tractor just as he shut it down. To say I wasn't impressed would be an understatement. I'm sure I looked at my dad in disbelief... I probably even said something like "No way is that little thing gonna help". Dad said something like "You never know until you try". We discussed where the car was and I hooked up a small trailer to my uncle's tractor so my brother and I could ride out behind him. Then he started his tractor... sort of. He cranked over that tiny single cylinder engine, which had one huge piston, or so I was told. It kinda cranked over slowly, then made a 'Poomp" sound one time... cranked some more; gave off with another "Poomp", then another until all the "Poomp"s kind of joined in a chorus. Yes, you guessed it; I was even less impressed. We grabbed some chains and headed out to watch the tractor get stuck (or so I thought). We got out there, hooked up the tractor to the front of that Olds monstrosity and I stood back and laughed. The tractor with the trailer couldn't weigh even half as much as that big black Oldsmobile! But, as my dad hinted; what did I have to lose. My uncle put his tractor in low gear, lurched it slowly forward and proceeded to extricate that car easily! I was caught by surprise! In my inexperienced mind it made no sense, but I was thrilled nonetheless! He towed the car all the way back to the house for us. Thanks to my dad, I offered to pay for fuel for the tractor, but my uncle wanted none of it. I thanked him far more times than necessary, I'm sure, and he headed home with his tractor. I never spoke ill of his beat up old tractor again, that's for sure!
