Great video I worked in cowthick quarry as a 17 year old trainee in 1970.

I walked through the tunnel about 5 years ago, the Corby end was blocked with rubble. I think those bricked up walls and vents are only a couple of years old. The long sleepers are 'crossing timbers', used on points and crossovers, where the tracks diverge. 'Standard gauge' (4' 8.5") was used by all the main railway companies, though Brunel tried broad gauge tracks in the 1800's

I remember something like this. Near where they end the video is the old approach to the steelworks. In the early eighties, my uncle, cousin and I used to walk around the area. We found an old air raid shelter. Also, at that time, the foundations of the cable car system that delivered iron ore to the steelworks was still there. As a kid, I remember watching it from Oakley Road in the 60's.

That used to be so over grown, it was harvested for wood a few years back, every so often you’ll see steel poles sunk in the ground, green in colour, all part of the works power & phone lines, they’ve been installing drains from the new sheds getting built in the field close to Weldon land fill. It will flow from there to Harpers brook. Wasn’t that long ago that trains ran through there from the back of clay pits / soot hills. Where Tesco’s is, the spoil heaps from the furnaces were pretty huge. Not sure if British Steel still own it thou.
